Waltham Forest Council in north-east London paid £7,200 five years ago to have a life-sized sculpture of the footballer, who was raised in the area, built. However, the effigy remains locked up after the initial plan to place it at the Chingford Overground station fell through following a risk assessment, reports.

A spokesperson for Kane said the Bayern Munich and England striker is excited to see the image installed soon, saying: "Especially with Harry being England and Tottenham's all time top goal scorer. It is what he deserves. The location of the statue is really important to us and like Emma said we are having some issues at the moment, but when we get it right, we will be happy to go."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane became a Tottenham and England icon, scoring 278 goals in 430 competitive appearances for his club, while he has struck 62 times in 89 games for the Three Lions. He is off to a flying start at Bayern Munich since joining the German side in the summer, scoring 29 times in 30 games.

While councillors continue to look for a new home for the Kane statue, the man himself will hope to fire Bayern to success in Germany and in Europe this season. The 30-year-old and his Bavarian team-mates have a mountain to climb, though, as they sit eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and trail Lazio after the first leg of their Champions League tie. The chaos continued on Wednesday as Bayern announced that head coach Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season.

Newcastle should retain Jacob Murphy amid reported loan interest

[ad_pod ]

West Bromwich Albion are keen to sign Jacob Murphy on loan from Newcastle United in January, per The Express and Star.

Murphy has made 12 appearances in all competitions thus far this season but the Championship club are hoping to take him on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle paid £12million to sign Murphy from Norwich City in 2017.

However, he has struggled for form thus far this season and has yet to score in 2018-19, as per Transfermarkt. Indeed, he has netted just once for the Magpies in 40 games.

He has, however, provided two assists thus far this season, though he has yet to complete 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Check out the video below for Emma Conybeare’s rundown of which clubs need what in the January transfer window…

The Baggies are reported to want Murphy to replace Harvey Barnes, who was recalled by Leicester City earlier in January, reports the BBC.

Murphy, an England Under-21 international, has plenty of Championship pedigree, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in 46 games in the second-tier, as per Transfermarkt.

Crazy to let him leave

Newcastle are yet to secure an attacking reinforcement thus far this month.

Sky Sports report that they have agreed a deal to sign defender Jordan Lukaku on loan from Lazio but they have yet to bring in a new forward player.

Thus, it would make little sense for Rafael Benitez to sign off on allowing Murphy to leave for the Championship.

He has yet to prove his worth to the Magpies but is surely an excellent option from the bench as an impact substitute, even with the wing-back system currently being employed by the Spaniard.

Were an attacking signing – Miguel Almiron, perhaps, with whom Newcastle have been linked with an offer remaining on the table according to The Chronicle – to join the club, perhaps that stance would be altered, and for good reason.

But as it is now, Murphy should be kept on the books, in the hope that he will be soon step up at St James’ Park.

Arsenal player ratings vs Luton Town: David Raya is a very lucky man! Declan Rice comes to hapless goalkeeper's rescue with last-gasp winner after two heinous errors

The pressure ramped up on Mikel Arteta's first-choice 'keeper as he made a pair of terrible mistakes at Kenilworth Road

Declan Rice scored a dramatic 97th-minute winner to spare David Raya's blushes and send Arsenal five points clear at the top of the Premier League following a thrilling 4-3 win at Luton on Tuesday night.

Two awful second-half errors from Raya looked to have seen his side drop two crucial points in the title race at Kenilworth Road, only for Rice to pop up deep into stoppage time to plant a header past Thomas Kaminski and spark wild celebrations in the away end.

It was an incredible end to a crazy game which swung back and forth all evening. Gabriel Martinelli had given Arsenal the lead, but Gabriel Osho levelled soon after with a free header from a corner, only for Gabriel Jesus to make it 2-1 seconds before the break.

At that point the Gunners appeared well placed to go on and secure a comfortable win, but Raya flapped at a corner early in the second half to allow Elijah Adebayo to equalise before letting a Ross Barkley shot squirm under his body soon after.

It was another awful moment for the Arsenal keeper, one that will see Mikel Arteta come in for even more questions about his decision to replace Aaron Ramsdale with the on-loan Brentford stopper.

But Havertz levelled soon after before Rice sealed all three points with seconds remaining to secure a remarkable victory.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from Kenilworth Road…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

David Raya (3/10):

Couldn't do anything with Osho's well placed header, but was beaten far too easily by Adebayo for the second goal and then let Barkley's shot squirm under his body. Really poor and two more errors that will do little to silence his doubters.

Ben White (7/10):

Put under pressure early in the first half, but responded well and was a threat down the right. Excellent cross to set up Jesus.

William Saliba (7/10):

Never really looked troubled. Cruised through the game as he always does.

Gabriel Magalhaes (7/10):

Took a couple of big challenges early on which angered him, but soon calmed down to form his usual commanding partnership with Saliba.

Jakub Kiwior (6/10):

Didn't look entirely comfortable operating in the left-back role. Luton looked to press him quickly and he struggled at times in possession.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Declan Rice (8/10):

Another strong performance. Looked to be the one calm head at times amid all the madness. Popped up with the crucial winner right at the death.

Kai Havertz (8/10):

Another goal for Arsenal's summer signing from Chelsea. After a slow start he is really starting to find his feet. Competed well all evening and showed some nice touches. Impressive.

Martin Odegaard (7/10):

Really grew into the first half after a quiet start and linked up well with White and Saka. Wasn't as influential after half-time, but popped up with the cross right at the end for Rice to head home.

Getty ImagesAttack

Bukayo Saka (8/10):

Lovely assist for Martinelli's goal and then produced a sublime pass for White in the build-up to Jesus' second. Another game when he makes a difference for Arsenal.

Gabriel Jesus (8/10):

You could see he was getting rattled by some of the tackles that were coming his way. He kept his head though and scored Arsenal's second having also play a key role in Martinelli's opener. Great play to set up Havertz for the third as well.

Gabriel Martinelli (7/10):

Took a big hit early on and never really looked comfortable after that. Was still alert enough to open the scoring though in the first half. Replaced by Trossard early in the second.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Leandro Trossard (6/10):

Looked bright when he came on and helped Arsenal dominate the closing stages, but couldn't find a way through.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (7/10):

Almost set up a goal for Havertz late on and then played a key role in Rice's dramatic winner.

Mikel Arteta (6/10):

His subs worked well, but he will have to face yet more questions about his decision to bring in Raya over Aaron Ramsdale.

He has figured prominently for Inter Miami so far, but had seen questions asked of his contribution after struggling for goals. After bagging a brace in a 5-0 MLS demolition of Florida neighbours Orlando City, Suarez said: “From an individual standpoint, I am happy to be able to help the team. A striker and professional soccer player has to be accustomed to living with daily criticism. People in soccer do not have memory so in that sense I am very used to it. I have been playing professional soccer for almost 20 years, so I do not worry about things that people might be saying.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Suarez has the full backing of those around him in Miami, with Herons boss Tata Martino saying: “I said last week that to analyse a player when the team did not play a good game is unjust. The reality is the team played very well and Luis shined in all his splendour, not only as a goal-scorer but also with his assists.”

USMNT star Julian Gressel added on seeing Suarez rediscover his spark in a talismanic performance: “He left it all on the field without talking, and it is obviously very nice and it gives the whole group a good feeling when he is doing that type of stuff. Two goals, two assists, and an unbelievable assist as well where he is on a hat-trick in the first half and (instead) squares the ball to Robert (Taylor). I think that shows who he is, that shows what he does for this team, and how important he is. To have a guy like him on the team with that individual quality, I think we saw it today. That is something that is certainly good to have moving forward.”

From imperious to porous! Six reasons why Manchester City's defence is leaking goals at an alarming rate

The champions have conceded as many goals in their last three Premier League games as they had in their opening 11 matches. What's gone wrong?

Pep Guardiola may be the most admired coach in the world for the spell-binding, attacking football his sides have played down the years, from Barcelona to Bayern Munich to Manchester City. However, his thrilling brand has always been built on a platform of defensive solidity. In his 14 full seasons in elite coaching, Guardiola's side's have only not had the best defensive record in the league on three occasions.

The Catalan is a devotee of Johan Cruyff, who famously said that if you have the ball, the opposition cannot score. And despite all of the beautiful football the coach has overseen, he always been obsessed with taming the opposition. Above all, he has valued controlling the play.

But right now, Guardiola's side seem to be able to do everything but control games. His team are still playing thrilling football, but they have forgotten how to defend.

City have conceded eight goals in their last three Premier League games (drawing 4-4 at Chelsea, 1-1 with Liverpool and 3-3 with Tottenham) – as many as in their first 11 matches of the season. And if you count their 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League, they have shipped a remarkable 10 goals in their last four matches.

So what's happened to Guardiola's ever-reliable defence? GOAL investigates…

GettyGundogan's departure & Rodri reliance

Ilkay Gundogan was pretty much the perfect midfielder. He was able to dictate the pace of a game and exert his own control on it with his subtle touches and passing, and was also more than capable of scoring crucial goals, stepping up in clutch moments like the final day of the 2021-22 season or in last season's FA Cup final.

The German's departure to Barcelona left City with an enormous hole and they could never fill it entirely, but they brought in Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes to at least plug some of the gaps. Unfortunately, the new signings have had their share of injury problems, making just 12 starts in all competitions between them.

The pair's absences, coupled with John Stones' long stretches out, has put too much pressure on Rodri to anchor City. The Spaniard has done an amiable job and the team are almost lost without him, but he has naturally struggled to give the team the same control they had last season.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesStones' injury troubles

Guardiola's greatest tactical tweak of last season was to reinvent Stones as a holding midfielder, giving the defender license to move forward when City were in possession. He had originally experimented with Rico Lewis in the role, but found that Stones was better suited to it.

The result was that City enjoyed greater possession and control, as Stones was able to slow the pace down when needed or step it up, helping his side break the press with his renowned ball carrying skills.

The former Everton man has, however, been injured for the majority of the season, depriving Guardiola of his ideal link-man between defence and midfield. Stones injured a hip muscle in the Community Shield, missing the first two months of the season. He only got three-and-a-half games under his belt before picking up another injury against Young Boys and is yet to make his return.

Guardiola has mostly played Manuel Akanji in the role in Stones' absence, and he has had some success there, especially against Liverpool, when City managed to control most of the match but failed to kill off Jurgen Klopp's side, allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to equalise with a late howitzer.

But the Swiss' limitations compared to Stones' aptitude for the role became more apparent against Tottenham, above all in the second half. The good news is that 'the Barnsley Beckenbauer' is set to return imminently and could feature on Wednesday against Aston Villa.

Getty ImagesDe Bruyne's absence looms large

City have also had to make do without Kevin De Bruyne, their captain and talisman of the last eight years, for the entirety of the season, not counting the 20 minutes he played on the opening day against Burnley before tearing his hamstring.

De Bruyne is known more for his attacking threat than his defensive contributions, but his absence means City are missing one of their main focal points on the pitch. The Belgian ranked second within the team last season for progressive ball carries and progressive passes completed, and third for progressive passes received, which shows his influence on the team's overall play beyond the more obvious metrics of goals and assists.

And if you believe in the mantra that attack is the best form of defence, then De Bruyne's lengthy absence explains City's problems at the back even more. The playmaker has scored 96 times and assisted 153 goals for the Blues, and last year was as effective as ever, with 10 goals and 31 assists.

If De Bruyne were fit and available, it's easy to imagine that City would have taken care of Liverpool and Tottenham long before their late fightbacks, as well as tamed the chaos at Stamford Bridge.

(C)Getty ImagesDoku's electricity leads to instability

Jeremy Doku has been one of the most exciting things to happen to City this season and taken almost no time at all to impose himself on the Premier League. The winger has also quickly won over the fans at the Etihad, who rise to their feet in anticipation every time he picks up the ball.

Doku has been a revelation and City are a much more vibrant and unpredictable team with him in it. But the other side of the coin is that the 21-year-old's exhilarating dribbles make City more vulnerable to turnovers, giving the opposition the chance to counter-attack when they are out of shape.

He is also not the best player when it comes to tracking back or jockeying his marker, and Son Heung-min was able to comfortably dribble past him and score Tottenham's opening goal on Sunday. When the Belgian plays, City look less balanced and less assured than when Jack Grealish is on the left wing. But lately, Guardiola seems to have been willing to accept the defensive downside of playing Doku over Grealish for the attacking upside, starting him in the last three matches.

Grealish was one of City's best players last season largely down to his willingness to follow Guardiola's orders, frequently hugging the touchline and slowing play down so his team-mates could get forward, but he has had his own fitness struggles, missing a month with a thigh injury and falling victim to a vomiting bug before the Liverpool game.

Retiring Ali Krieger out to ruin fellow USWNT icon Megan Rapinoe's last dance with NWSL Championship triumph for Gotham FC

The pair won two Women's World Cups together with the U.S., but on Saturday, they are rivals as OL Reign takes on Gotham in the big season finale

When Megan Rapinoe and Ali Krieger, both set to retire at the end of this year, exchanged a few laughs over text back in September, they had no idea what they were manifesting. “When is your last game?”, Rapinoe asked, a question Krieger answered with the date of the 2023 NWSL Championship game. “Well I guess that’s my last game too,” was Rapinoe’s reply, the two giggling away as they imagined the unlikelihood of the stars aligning and setting up a title-deciding clash between Krieger’s Gotham and Rapinoe’s OL Reign.

But that is exactly what has happened. On Saturday, in San Diego, the final action for one of these icons of U.S. women’s soccer will be to lift a title that has eluded them for a whole decade.

These two have won plenty between them, including two Women’s World Cups together, but the top prize in their home domestic league isn’t on an otherwise almost complete list. Rapinoe has come closest over the years, playing in two of these NWSL Championship games and winning three Shields, the award given to the team that finishes top of the regular season standings, during 10 years with the Reign.

Given how regularly the Seattle-based side have been there or thereabouts, if you had predicted at the start of the year that Rapinoe would have a shot of signing off with this title, it wouldn’t have been a particularly bold shout. Krieger and Gotham, though? Now that’s a surprise.

GettyChances hard to come by

NJ/NY Gotham FC is the third different name for a club that has existed since 2006, first as Jersey Sky Blue, then as Sky Blue FC. As the latter, the New Jersey-based side won the Women's Professional Soccer title in 2009, that the league that preceded the NWSL. But shots at glory have been few and far between in the time since, with this year's appearance in the postseason just its third since the NWSL was formed in 2013. Finishing rock bottom of the standings in 2022, winning just four of its 22 matches, it’s fair to say that Gotham was not a popular pick to make the NWSL Championship game this year.

As an individual, despite having two World Cup titles and a UEFA Women’s Champions League triumph to her name, Krieger herself has only come close to the NWSL’s biggest trophy on one occasion, too, and that was seven years ago. With the Washington Spirit, the defender reached the Championship game, but it was lost to Western New York Flash in the most heart-breaking fashion, on penalties, Krieger missing the first spot-kick.

After five years with the Orlando Pride failed to give her another shot, the Florida side only reaching the postseason once in that time, and her first season with Gotham ending in a last-placed finish, Krieger would’ve been forgiven for coming into 2023, the final year of her career, thinking that her chance of adding that elusive Championship to her long list of achievements had gone.

But her swansong had quite the surprise in store…

AdvertisementGettyRebuilding a reputation

Gotham hasn’t been a particularly popular destination for players during its time in the NWSL. For example, when Julia Ashley was chosen by the club in the first round of the 2019 College Draft, despite being a New Jersey native, she opted to go to Sweden. "Just from what I’ve heard in terms of organization, some of the housing issues that they’ve had this past year, I’ve heard some bad things. I think everybody has,” she told at the time.

Indeed, in the Yates report, which mainly outlined the abusive behaviour and sexual misconduct in the NWSL when it was released last October, there were details of those exact issues. “Players reported living in houses with broken windows, cracked floors, leaking ceilings, dried mucus on the walls, and, in one instance, a whole human toenail sitting on a windowsill,” it read.

A lot of work, off the pitch as well as on it, has had to be done to get the team to its first NWSL Championship game, then, and since coming to the club as its general manager in 2021, Yael Averbuch West has done a lot of it.

GettyChange aplenty

So, what has Averbuch West changed? Well, one of the most obvious things is that she appointed a new head coach in Juan Carlos Amoros. The Spaniard previously held roles at the Houston Dash and Real Betis, but is best known for his success with Tottenham, helping the English club win three promotions to reach the Women’s Super League.

The number of staff around him was increased to offer more support, the squad was analyzed and rebuilt, and the issues with the facilities have also been addressed. Some of Gotham’s roster moves did appear questionable at times, with some fan favorites moved on, but others offered a glimpse into how strategic the club was growing to be, such as the shock draft-day trade that saw the club acquire USWNT star Lynn Williams.

That meant Gotham went from having the first overall pick in the draft to having the fourth overall pick, and it used that to select Jenna Nighswonger, who has been so good in her first year in the NWSL that she was up for the Rookie of the Year award.

There have been other stand-out moves, too. USWNT defender Kelley O’Hara joined fellow World Cup winner Krieger at the club, promising young talent Bruninha was brought over from Brazil and, midway through the season, another world champion, in Spain striker Esther Gonzalez, added extra firepower to the attack.

The changes have created a positive environment, a place where players want to be and a cohesive team that has a clear style. It’s also given Krieger, who was handed the captain’s armband in another of those clever off-season decisions, a shot of retiring on the highest of highs.

GettyCaptain Krieger

Krieger makes a fantastic captain, too. At 39 years old, she has plenty of experience under her belt, and a lot of that involves the art of winning. Indeed, she won an incredible treble in a five-year spell in Germany with Frankfurt, which included the Champions League, and she has two World Cup titles to her name.

The defender credits her time abroad with developing her as a person, the spell coming when she was still so young – straight out of college, even, and her personality is a crucial part of what makes her a brilliant leader today.

“When I first met Ali, I was just blown away by her genuine personality and how good of a person she is,” Nighswonger, who will complete her first NWSL season on Saturday while Krieger plays the final match of her career, said this week. “She was so welcoming immediately and she creates such a safe space and a good culture in the locker room.

“Going into a new position this year, I was a nervous wreck playing left-back, but she's helped me grow so much. Before every game she always says, 'I got your back’ or ‘I'm here whenever you need me', and that may seem like the most simple sentence in the world, but for me it's just the best thing. That allows me to get forward more, be more aggressive, go harder into tackles, because I know that the captain of our team and the person that's next to me, my left center-back, she believes in me wholeheartedly.”

According to a report in Ratcliffe intends to reshape the club's recruitment structure after taking over football operations of the club following a £1.3bn investment deal that would see him gain 25 per cent ownership. The departure of CEO Richard Arnold is a move in that direction which indicates a significant shakeup at the board level, with Ratcliffe keen to adopt a modern approach to recruitment.

The INEOS chief plans to take cues from Chelsea and appoint multiple sporting directors, deviating from the initially expected single director. The Chelsea model, led by two sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, which has seen the Blues spend close to £1.4bn in transfers, seemingly serves as a blueprint for a potential resurgence at Old Trafford. This move aims to enhance control over transfers while allowing manager Erik ten Hag to remain focused on managing first-team operations.

As part of Ratcliffe's planned overhaul at Manchester United, two notable figures have been linked to permanent roles as director of football – Paul Mitchell and Dougie Freedman. Interestingly, Mitchell, who has worked with clubs like Tottenham and Monaco, was previously overlooked by the club when John Murtough was appointed. Freedman, currently serving as the sporting director at Crystal Palace, is another contender for the director of football role, as his work at Crystal Palace has received widespread praise. He played a crucial role in securing transfers for key players at the London club, including centre-back Marc Guehi and winger Michael Olise, who have been instrumental for the Eagles. Ex-AC Milan player and official, Paolo Maldini, and former Liverpool sporting director Micahel Edwards are other names in the mix.

The midfielder was given the armband this season after coach Erik ten Hag stripped Harry Maguire of the captaincy.

Fernandes' leadership qualities have been called into question several times, with pundits such as Keane, Gary Neville and Micah Richards all criticising his body language and treatment of team-mates.

United legend Keane believes that it is time for Ten Hag take the armband off of the 29-year-old and give it to someone else.

WHAT THEY SAID

"The first thing I would do, I have to tell you having watched him again, I would definitely take the captaincy off him, 100 per cent," he said on .

"I know it's a big decision and obviously they changed the captain with Maguire. Fernandes is not captain material. I think he’s a talented player, no doubt about it. But what I saw with him today, I know we’ve discussed his before. His whinging, his moaning, his throwing his arms up in the air constantly. It really isn’t acceptable.

"I would take it off him. Where do you make changes? I would start with that because the manager can do that. He’s the opposite of what I’d want in a captain."
