Newcastle: Howe must axe Karl Darlow

Eddie Howe is set to be in the dugout for the first time as Newcastle manager as his side face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

He was forced to watch on from his home in isolation for the 3-3 draw with Brentford in the Premier League at St James’ Park last week.

The Magpies head into this clash bottom of the table with six points and are the only team left in the division without a single win to their name.

Liability

One change Howe should make to the XI for his first official game comes between the sticks. Karl Darlow had a howler against Brentford and must be brutally axed from the line-up against the Gunners, with Martin Dubravka coming in to replace him.

The ex-Nottingham Forest shot-stopper was given an opportunity to show Howe that he deserves to be the number one for the Magpies, but failed to grasp his chance as he struggled badly against the Bees. He recorded a SofaScore rating of 5.2 and that comes two games after he gave away a penalty against Chelsea and received a score of 5.7 that day.

On Match of the Day, Toon legend Alan Shearer blasted him as looking ‘nervous’ and berated his error for Ivan Toney’s goal, saying: “There were so many mistakes all over the place. Darlow there, it’s a basic error, he had a really poor game. He looked really nervous.”

The Brentford striker hit a low drive slightly to the side of Darlow and the Newcastle goalkeeper went down to his knees, allowing the ball to slip off his gloves and fly into the far corner. It appeared to be a routine save for the £30k-per-week man but it ended up costing the Magpies victory.

Dubravka averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.99 across 13 Premier League games last season but not made a single appearance this term, partly due to injury. It could be time for the Slovakian to come back in for Darlow and make his bow in the 2021/22 campaign, given his 31-year-old colleague’s poor form of late.

Darlow has become a liability between the sticks for Newcastle and Howe cannot afford to have an error-prone goalkeeper in a battle against relegation. Therefore, Dubravka must start and be given the chance to show that he can prove to be an upgrade in goal.

Newcastle should retain Jacob Murphy amid reported loan interest

[ad_pod ]

West Bromwich Albion are keen to sign Jacob Murphy on loan from Newcastle United in January, per The Express and Star.

Murphy has made 12 appearances in all competitions thus far this season but the Championship club are hoping to take him on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle paid £12million to sign Murphy from Norwich City in 2017.

However, he has struggled for form thus far this season and has yet to score in 2018-19, as per Transfermarkt. Indeed, he has netted just once for the Magpies in 40 games.

He has, however, provided two assists thus far this season, though he has yet to complete 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Check out the video below for Emma Conybeare’s rundown of which clubs need what in the January transfer window…

The Baggies are reported to want Murphy to replace Harvey Barnes, who was recalled by Leicester City earlier in January, reports the BBC.

Murphy, an England Under-21 international, has plenty of Championship pedigree, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in 46 games in the second-tier, as per Transfermarkt.

Crazy to let him leave

Newcastle are yet to secure an attacking reinforcement thus far this month.

Sky Sports report that they have agreed a deal to sign defender Jordan Lukaku on loan from Lazio but they have yet to bring in a new forward player.

Thus, it would make little sense for Rafael Benitez to sign off on allowing Murphy to leave for the Championship.

He has yet to prove his worth to the Magpies but is surely an excellent option from the bench as an impact substitute, even with the wing-back system currently being employed by the Spaniard.

Were an attacking signing – Miguel Almiron, perhaps, with whom Newcastle have been linked with an offer remaining on the table according to The Chronicle – to join the club, perhaps that stance would be altered, and for good reason.

But as it is now, Murphy should be kept on the books, in the hope that he will be soon step up at St James’ Park.

Coaches need to be more positive – Latif

Rashid Latif, the former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper, has called on coach Waqar Younis and his deputy Ijaz Ahmed to exercise calm and remain positive under pressure in the World Twenty20 to motivate their players

Cricinfo staff06-May-2010Rashid Latif, the former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper, has called on coach Waqar Younis and his deputy Ijaz Ahmed to exercise calm and remain positive under pressure in the World Twenty20 to motivate their players. “Waqar Younis and Ijaz Ahmed looked under pressure during Pakistan’s match against Australia. Their body language was not good,” Latif was quoted by as saying. “World Twenty20 is a tough event and absorbing pressure in tough games by players and coaches is vital. Positivity of coaches is very important because it will send a good message to the players.”Pakistan were beaten comprehensively by Australia in St Lucia, but progressed to the Super Eights due to their win over Bangladesh in their first game. “It’s not the end of the world with one defeat against Australia. Our bowlers failed to bowl with variations when they came under pressure,” Latif said. “[Mohammad] Sami received a thrashing because he did not vary his pace and bowled short which allowed the Australian batsmen to punish him.”These things are part of the game and anything can happen in this version of the game.”Latif added the tracks in the Caribbean could be exploited by both fast bowlers and spinners if they used their variations well. “Only experienced spinners can exploit these pitches and pace bowlers can also get success if they bowl intelligently with varying pace and bowling in the right areas,” he said.Pakistan take on England in Barbados in their first Super Eights game on Thursday.

Everton could secure signing of Ramsey

Everton will need to get better at taking the chances they create as they have conceded more goals than they have scored this season, leaving them 15th in the Premier League going into the new year.

The attacking prowess at Goodison Park has been spectacularly flat since the arrival of Rafael Benitez in the summer, which can be put down to injuries to key attacking players like Dominic Calvert Lewin, as well as inconsistencies in the squad.

Despite the struggles Everton has faced in the first half of the season, two of the signings that Benitez made in the previous transfer window, Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend, are currently the two top scorers for the club this season. Therefore, the Spanish manager definitely has an eye for what can work in attack and should use that nous when dipping into the transfer market this month.

One player who has been linked to the club is former Arsenal star, Aaron Ramsey, who has been reported to be leaving Juventus in a matter of days, with the Welshman only going back to Turin to say goodbye to his team-mates.

It was reported earlier this week that a swap loan deal for out-of-favour Lucas Digne could be on the cards, but it now looks like Ramsey will be making different plans in the coming days and weeks, and the Toffees manager should be capitalising on the 31-year-old’s impending departure from Serie A.

The attacking midfielder has an impressive 148 goals and assists throughout his career, compared to current Everton midfielder Tom Davies, who despite being eight years Ramsey’s junior can only boast 19 goal contributions from 190 career appearances.

Davies’ team-mate Abdoulaye Doucoure would thrive with a player like Ramsey by his side, as the pair could form a deadly midfield partnership to take the Toffees back where they belong in the top half of the table by the end of the season.

Doucoure’s strength in positioning is one of his best attributes, as well as his ability to offer creativity and goals from midfield, with two goals and four assists so far this season.

Combining those strengths with Ramsey’s consistently outstanding passing accuracy from playing in many midfield positions, and his experience of elite competitions, could be a huge threat for Everton’s opponents in the second half of the season. Benitez must do everything he can to try and make it happen this month.

The veteran Uruguayan frontman has been reunited with former Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba at Chase Stadium. He is now 37 years of age and is having to manage long-standing knee problems that will impact how many games he is able to play in 2024.

He has figured prominently for Inter Miami so far, but had seen questions asked of his contribution after struggling for goals. After bagging a brace in a 5-0 MLS demolition of Florida neighbours Orlando City, Suarez said: “From an individual standpoint, I am happy to be able to help the team. A striker and professional soccer player has to be accustomed to living with daily criticism. People in soccer do not have memory so in that sense I am very used to it. I have been playing professional soccer for almost 20 years, so I do not worry about things that people might be saying.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Suarez has the full backing of those around him in Miami, with Herons boss Tata Martino saying: “I said last week that to analyse a player when the team did not play a good game is unjust. The reality is the team played very well and Luis shined in all his splendour, not only as a goal-scorer but also with his assists.”

USMNT star Julian Gressel added on seeing Suarez rediscover his spark in a talismanic performance: “He left it all on the field without talking, and it is obviously very nice and it gives the whole group a good feeling when he is doing that type of stuff. Two goals, two assists, and an unbelievable assist as well where he is on a hat-trick in the first half and (instead) squares the ball to Robert (Taylor). I think that shows who he is, that shows what he does for this team, and how important he is. To have a guy like him on the team with that individual quality, I think we saw it today. That is something that is certainly good to have moving forward.”

Samaraweera, Tanvir star in Kandurata win

Two vicious bursts from Sohail Tanvir and Thilan Samaraweera’s hitherto-unsuspected shot repertoire saw Kandurata Warriors comfortably beat Uthura Rudras

The Report by Andrew Fernando18-Aug-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThilan Samaraweera slammed his highest Twenty20 score of 71, off 45 balls•Shaun Roy/SPORTZPICS/SLPLTwo vicious bursts from Sohail Tanvir and Thilan Samaraweera’s hitherto-unsuspected shot repertoire saw Kandurata Warriors comfortably beat Uthura Rudras. The victory is the first for the Warriors in the Sri Lanka Premier League, leaving the Rudras the only winless side after three matches. In pursuit of 169, the Rudras’ chances were dented by Tanvir’s first two overs, which yielded two wickets for nine. When John Hastings claimed two of his own soon after, the Rudras’ most dangerous batsmen were already back in the dug-out, and they were faced with a required rate of well above nine, from 34 for 4. Earlier in the evening Samaraweera had blasted 71, to send the Warriors on their way to an imposing total, hitting nine fours and a six in his 45-ball stay.Tanvir was close to unplayable in his first two overs, as he swung the ball prodigiously away from the right-hand batsmen, and got plenty to jag back off the seam as well. Rob Quiney knew no more about the indipper that sent him back second ball, than Mahela Udawatte knew about the one that uprooted his off stump in Tanvir’s next over. Brendan Taylor and Chamara Kapugedara were quickly removed by Hastings, and when Jehan Mubarak fell to Saeed Ajmal for 13, the Rudras had lost their top five for 54. Dillon du Preez launched three boundaries to spark hope of an unlikely recovery, but when the rains came down at 105 for 7 from 16 overs, the Rudras’ fate was sealed.Sanath Jayasuriya earlier took guard at the top of the innings for the first time in the SLPL, but it was partner Samaraweera who was the unlikely source of early momentum for the Warriors. Four boundaries in seven balls began Samaraweera’s assault and signaled he wasn’t just there to play second fiddle to Jayasuriya. Having made mere spectators out of several opening partners during his international career, Jayasuriya watched on this time, as the once obdurate Samaraweera showcased a startling array of strokes, including two over-the-shoulder-scoops off Naved-ul-Hasan. At Jayasuriya’s demise at 50 for 1, he had only made five runs, and Samaraweera’s 27-ball 50 proved the catalyst for a dominating Warriors performance.

Everton eye Giovanni Simeone

Everton have set their sights on Serie A striker Giovanni Simeone, according to Fichajes.

The lowdown

The 26-year-old is currently on loan from Cagliari at fellow top-flight club Hellas Verona. He’s been in prolific form so far this season, netting 11 goals in 15 Serie A appearances, scoring once every 89 minutes on average (via Transfermarkt).

In Europe’s top five leagues, only Robert Lewandowski (16), Ciro Immobile, Dusan Vlahovic, Mohamed Salah (13), Karim Benzema and Patrick Schick (12) have bagged more goals this season.

However, Simeone stands out among that group, having out-performed his xG by a whopping 6.7. That makes him the most lethal finisher in the leading divisions (via FBRef).

The latest

The report from Fichajes stated that Everton hold a keen interest in Simeone as they eye a ‘quality substitute’ for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, adding that summer signing Salomon Rondon ‘has not been in the expected form’.

The outlet also revealed that Cagliari’s current price tag is €10m (£8.5m), but that could change.

The verdict

Simeone may not be able to sustain that rate of xG overperformance, but he certainly looks like he would be an upgrade on Rondon.

The Venezuelan is yet to find the net in 10 appearances for the Blues and, as it stands, he has recorded more offsides (five) than he has shots on target (three).

Perhaps the question is whether Simeone accepts a back-up role behind Calvert-Lewin off the back of his present goalscoring exploits, as there may be better opportunities available to him elsewhere.

In other news, Marcel Brands could be followed out the door by another key figure.

Ben White: Arsenal fans have fallen in love with Mikel Arteta's new master of sh*thousery

The Gunners' £50m defender has been one of the stars of the season in north London – just don't ask him if he saw the game last night!

Arsenal fans knew exactly what was coming when Ben White was asked in the aftermath of the win against Leeds whether he had paid much attention to Manchester City’s victory at Liverpool earlier in the afternoon.

“I don’t watch football,” the right-back replied stoney faced.

Immediately that quote was clipped up and plastered all over social media. ‘Never change Ben’ was the overriding message from supporters, who just can’t get enough of their right-back.

🏆 TOP STORY: Frank is back! Lampard taking first Chelsea training📣 HAVE YOUR SAY: Does Lampard's Chelsea return prove Boehly has NO IDEA?🚨 MUST READ: PSG would be CRAZY to keep Messi

White may not be overly appreciated by England and Gareth Southgate at present, but he is absolutely loved at Arsenal. And that is no surprise given the performances he has been putting in for Mikel Arteta’s league leaders this season.

“I’m really pleased with him,” Arteta said after the win against Leeds, which saw White score his second goal of the season in the 4-1 success.

GettyMoney well spent

When White first signed from Brighton in the summer of 2021, there were plenty of questions raised over the £50 million price tag. Those doubters have long been silenced, however.

The 25-year-old has been exceptional, whether that be at centre-back last season or at right-back during the current campaign, where he has excelled having been switched out wide by Arteta to accommodate William Saliba.

Very few central defenders could move into a full-back role and look as assured as White has done in this Arsenal side, but such is his level of ability that he has made it look easy.

“Ben has been incredible all season,” Bukayo Saka said, while discussing his team-mate. “We are building a great partnership, with Martin [Odegaard] on that right side.”

AdvertisementGettyA master of the dark arts

It’s not just his performance levels that have made White so popular at Arsenal, however – it’s the way he handles himself. Never has the term ‘sh*thousery’ applied more to a player than it does to Arteta’s right-back.

Reminding Spurs fans of the score during the north London derbies, the tactical fouls, the little digs to the opposition keeper while waiting for a corner to come in, the sly smile he gives when he gets a reaction. It all just adds to his cult hero status in north London.

As do his post-match interviews, as we witnessed after Saturday’s win. White wasn’t joking when he said he doesn’t watch football.

"I watch myself for analytical reasons,” he explained earlier in the season. “I just wouldn't just sit down and watch a game. After I’ve trained all day and had four or five meetings about football, the last thing I want to do is watch more.”

That’s the sort of the thing that makes White stand out so much from the crowd. He’s just not the type to personality we are used to seeing in the Premier League, and Arsenal fans love him for that.

They love that he has that edge to him, that he has that ability to wind up the opposition players and their fans.

The Saka link-up

Occasionally, White’s antics can backfire, as they did at Leicester when the VAR cameras picked up his tug on Danny Ward and so ruled out Leandro Trossard’s stunning goal. But you won’t find an Arsenal fan who would want White to change his ways because of that.

Of course, if you have that side to your game like White has, you have to be able to back it up on the pitch, and he can certainly do that.

The partnership he has struck up with Saka down that flank has been so integral to Arsenal’s success. The understanding they have, along with Odegaard, is one of the great strengths of Arteta’s side.

Although Trossard filled in excellently for Saka against Leeds, it was very evident in the first half how much White was missing having his usual partner in crime operating in front of him.

But one of White’s biggest attributes, which can be said for Trossard as well, is his level of intelligence and technical quality, and so it didn’t long for either player to adapt and make a big impact on the game.

White’s goal just after half-time was crucial, as it gave Arsenal the breathing space they needed.

Getty Images'He’s timing his runs very well'

Gabriel Martinelli understandably took a lot of credit for his excellent ball in, but when you look at White in the replays, he is pointing exactly where he wants it. He was clever enough to see the space and get in front of his defender to score. It was just reward for his industry and his vision.

It was also his second crucial goal in a matter of weeks, following on from his strike against Bournemouth.

“He’s timing his runs very well and he’s a threat,” said Arteta. “Even on set-pieces, he’s improved a lot to be more dangerous and to drive more attention to the opponent. “

The reaction of his team-mates in the celebration that followed White’s goal against Leeds told its own story. You can see how popular he is within the squad by the way he was mobbed by everyone.

It was also very apparent how much joy his team-mates were all taking in giving him a series of head slaps. Oleksandr Zinchenko even kicked him up the backside.

This was clearly some payback for all the times he had done it to them during various celebrations over the course of the past few months.

The 23-year-old Super Eagle was among the goals as Napoli recovered from their previous 3-2 defeat against Empoli to hammer Sassuolo 6-1 in a Serie A fixture at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Saturday.

Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly put the Partenopei ahead before Osimhen grabbed the second and assisted in the entertaining fixture which also saw Hirving Lozano, Dries Mertens (2) and Amir Rrahmani inscribe their names on the scoresheet.

The attacker is currently ranked joint seventh in the Serie A goalscoring charts with a tally of 13 goals this campaign, as well as being the team’s top league scorer.

GettyToo Bad: Edouard Mendy

The 30-year-old Senegal international conceded yet again courtesy of a clinical finish from Richarlison as Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Going into the fixture, Mendy had also failed to keep a clean sheet for the Blues as they battled to a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford last Thursday.

So far in this campaign, the Lion of Teranga has kept 13 clean sheets, which is tied for the third-most in the competition. In last season's Premier League, he played in 31 games for Chelsea and kept a clean sheet in 16 of those fixtures.
