Ahmed, Agar 'Ashes contenders' – Inverarity

The legspinner Fawad Ahmed remains in contention for a late Ashes call-up despite being named in the Australia A squad to tour Africa while England and Australia battle for the urn. The national selectors have chosen a 16-man group for the trip to Zimbabwe and South Africa in July and August and they have included both Ahmed and the left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, while batsmen Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch have also been picked despite struggling in the Sheffield Shield last summer.Steven Smith, who is serving as vice-captain to Brad Haddin on the ongoing Australia A tour of England, will lead the side on the month-long trip, which features a three-day game against Zimbabwe in Harare, followed by two four-day matches against South Africa A. There is also a limited-overs section of the tour and Australia A will play at least four 50-over games during a one-day tri-series featuring South Africa A and India A in Pretoria.A number of changes were necessary from the squad in England, given that the selectors chose to use that trip as a chance for several Ashes squad members to adjust to the conditions ahead of the official start of the Test tour. The fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Gurinder Sandhu have been called up from outside the group in England, as has the wicketkeeper Tim Paine and the trio of Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who played in the Champions Trophy.Ahmed and Agar, both of whom are in the Australia A team in England, were both named but the national selector John Inverarity left the door open for either man to be added to the Ashes squad. Agar, a 19-year-old left-armer who impressed the selectors when he travelled with the Australians in India earlier this year, has taken 4 for 61 and scored a half-century in his two Australia A matches in England so far, while Ahmed took 1 for 65 in his only game.”If we decide to expand the Ashes squad and expand it with a spinner, then Ashton Agar and Fawad Ahmed are the two contenders for that position,” Inverarity said. “They’re both included in this squad and we look forward to them getting more opportunity in this environment.”Finch was named vice-captain of the squad and while there is no question of his claims to a place in the one-day group – he was comfortably the leading Ryobi Cup run scorer last summer with 504 runs at an average of 84 – he will be equally desperate to impress in the first-class games after being overlooked by Victoria for most of the 2012-13 Shield campaign. The disparity between Finch’s short-form and long-form results was one of the great mysteries of the domestic summer, for in four Shield matches at the start of the season he made 0, 34, 1, 8, 9 and 16, and he did not play a Shield game after he was dropped in November. However, Finch did break into the ODI side during the summer and scored heavily as captain of Australia A against the England Lions in a one-day series in February and March.Like Finch, Shaun Marsh had a domestic campaign that featured few runs in the longer format but plenty in coloured clothing. Marsh was the top scorer in the Big Bash League with 412 runs at 58.85 and in the Ryobi Cup he made 215 at 53.75, but his Shield summer was poor and brought only 152 runs at 19 in four appearances. Marsh turns 30 next month and needs a big tour to prove to the selectors that he has more to offer at international level.”Shaun at the moment is very fit and focused,” Inverarity said. “This will be a really good opportunity for him. There’s a lot of cricket there and … it is a really good opportunity for him to kick-start his career a bit.”The inclusions of Marsh and Finch after such disappointing Shield campaigns highlights the lack of batting depth in Australia’s domestic game, although Callum Ferguson and Joe Burns could consider themselves unlucky to have been overlooked. Ferguson had a productive season in the Shield and Ryobi Cup and Burns, after a slow start, finished the summer well, although the selectors might have decided he would gain as much from his ongoing county stint with Leicestershire as an A tour. The Tasmania batsman Jordan Silk was the only non-Ashes squad member to miss out from the Australia A team in England. The fast bowler Pat Cummins will travel with the squad as a development player, much like he has in England, although Inverarity said there could yet be a chance of officially adding him to the squad.”Pat is progressing very well,” Inverarity said. “Currently he is with the Australia A tour in England in a development capacity. He has trained very hard, he’s very fit and very strong. Dennis Lillee worked with him and he has refined his action a little to put less stress on his body and we’re very keen that he ingrains those habits before we put him into a contest in the field, to ensure that he doesn’t revert to old habits under the pressure of the game. It could be that we’re ready to give him a run in a couple of games there.”Australia A squad Steven Smith (capt), Aaron Finch (vice-capt), Ashton Agar, Fawad Ahmed, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Alex Doolan, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Nic Maddinson, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tim Paine (wk), Gurinder Sandhu, Chadd Sayers, Pat Cummins (development player).

Injured Smith out of Champions Trophy

South Africa’s Graeme Smith will miss the Champions Trophy in England next month, because of the flaring up of a long-term ankle injury that will require surgery

South Africa’s Graeme Smith will miss the Champions Trophy in England next month, because of the flaring up of a long-term ankle injury that will require surgery*.Smith had scans in London on the ankle on Wednesday and Surrey announced that he would return home to South Africa immediately to undergo an operation. South Africa are set to feature in the opening fixture of the Champions Trophy, against India on June 6, in just over four weeks’ time.Cricket South Africa confirmed in a release on Thursday morning that Smith will miss the tournament. “Graeme has been troubled by left ankle pain over the last few months and despite extensive treatment and physiotherapy, it has recently deteriorated significantly while playing for Surrey in England. Surgery will be required, and he has been advised to follow a rest and rehabilitation programme over the next four to six months,” team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee, was quoted as saying in the release. “This unfortunately rules him out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales and the Selectors will name a replacement in due course.”Smith said: “It’s a big blow for me personally to be missing out on the Champions Trophy next month. Our ODI squad is creating something special and I was looking forward to being part of that family.”Titans opening batsmen Henry Davids and Lions youngster Quinton de Kock are the likeliest candidates to replace Smith in the ODI squad. It is a second setback for South Africa, as they are also without Jacques Kallis for the tournament, after the allrounder had opted to skip it due to personal reasons. On having to cut his county stint short, Smith said: “To have to head home now, so early in my time at Surrey is very frustrating but I leave the team in a good place and hope to be back with them as soon as possible.”Smith is contracted for three years and, although Surrey are resigned to the fact that his brief tenure as captain is already at an end for this season, they are confident he will return in 2014. He will not play against Durham in the Championship match beginning at The Oval on Friday and leaves Surrey in the bottom two of the first division.Surrey’s team director, Chris Adams, said: “Graeme has made an impressive start as a leader and the squad have really responded to his leadership. It’s clearly disappointing for all, especially Graeme, but we wish him a speedy recovery.”Smith missed South Africa’s fifth ODI against Pakistan in Benoni at the end of March and at the time Moosajee had referred to a “chronic left ankle problem”.He added: “We have been trying to manage him but unfortunately the impingement syndrome slowed him down today and he is quite symptomatic. He has had surgery on this ankle a while ago and I think the load and the volume of cricket for the year, and particularly during this ODI series, has troubled him.”Nevertheless, Smith, who described his ankle problem as “an ongoing problem”, honoured his contract with Surrey, aware that he was regarded as a prestigious signing who could bring stability to the club following a traumatic period brought about by the death on the London underground of their England Lions batsman Tom Maynard.Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, has already been signed as Smith’s replacement, but he was not scheduled to arrive until the start of the Champions Trophy and will see out his IPL contract with Mumbai Indians.*05.50GMT, May 9: This article has been updated after CSA confirmed Graeme Smith will miss the Champions Trophy

India A choke, Coulter-Nile steals narrow win

Needing 23 from the last four overs with six wickets in hand, India A choked against Nathan Coulter-Nile and Josh Hazlewood to lose by seven runs

The Report by Abhishek Purohit08-Aug-2013

India A had been stunned by an incredible assault from Glenn Maxwell, who had smashed an unbeaten 145 off 79 deliveries to take Australia A to 298 from 152 for 8 in the one-day tri-series in South Africa. They had absorbed that unexpected blow and Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma had responded with fifties to put them on course in the stiff chase. They needed 23 from the last four overs with six wickets in hand and Rayudu in flow. However, Nathan Coulter-Nile stepped up, and India A choked. They lost four wickets and managed 15 runs, with Coulter-Nile delivering a double-wicket maiden in the penultimate over. In stark contrast, Maxwell, in the company of Josh Hazlewood, had looted 59 off the last four in a ninth-wicket stand worth 146 in 13.4 overs.India A’s meltdown started when Coulter-Nile conceded just two singles in the 47th over, tying down Dinesh Karthik. Hazlewood then gave away five off the first five balls of the 48th, and trapped Karthik lbw off the last. Coulter-Nile all but sealed the result in the 49th, removing Rayudu for 70 and Stuart Binny for a duck to go with four dot balls. Sixteen off the final over from Hazlewood was going to be too much for the tail, a sign of how quickly and decisively Coulter-Nile had turned the match.Lalchand Rajput, the India A coach, said losing Karthik and Rayudu off successive deliveries suddenly derailed the innings but believed the side had a lot to take away from the game. “The wickets of Rayudu and Karthik put a lot of pressure on the incoming batsmen, who had no time at all to get themselves in,” Rajput told ESPNcricinfo. “Even if they had had a bit of time, things might have been different. But it was a fantastic game. It is not easy to chase around 300 and we got so close. It is a good learning process for the boys.”Rajput praised Maxwell’s big-hitting performance, saying that was the reason he had attracted so much interest in the IPL. Maxwell’s reputation as a power-hitter and his all-round ability had earned him a surprise reward in February this year, when he was bought by Mumbai Indians for $1 million in the IPL auction. “We all know how hard he can hit the ball. That is why he went for a million dollars in the IPL. He hit some unbelievable shots. I will not hold anything against my bowlers. They had taken all those wickets and brought us back. We had them at 152 for 8 but it was his day today. “Maxwell almost doubled Australia A’s score with No 10 at the other end. He came in at 122 for 5 in the midst of a collapse following a strong beginning and went on club 18 fours and six sixes.Fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Jaydev Unadkat had prospered against the Zimbabwe line-up in the recent ODI series with the senior India team. Here, they ran into Maxwell, who hit them for three successive boundaries each, Unadkat suffering that fate twice. The third fast bowler, Punjab’s Siddarth Kaul – one of the six India A players not to have travelled to Zimbabwe – was taken apart for three successive sixes in the final over, also the costliest of the innings at 23 runs. This was easily Maxwell’s highest List A score, beating the previous one of 61. Maxwell’s assault was notable as much for how long it lasted as for the fact that it arrived with only No 11 left to come in. He had just kickstarted his acceleration when he reached his first fifty off 47 deliveries. He needed 19 more of them to zoom to his hundred, and 13 thereafter to end five short of 150.India A’s spinners had brought them back strongly after Cheteshwar Pujara asked Australia A to bat and watched them build their way to 120 for 2, with Alex Doolan and Nic Maddinson steering the innings. Raina began the collapse when he had Doolan caught by Pujara for 30 in the 26th over. Two balls later, Maddinson was bowled by another part-timer, Shikhar Dhawan, for a brisk 52. Dhawan had Tim Paine stumped in the same over, and two wickets in two balls from left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem followed, before Maxwell took charge.Rohit and Dhawan, who have opened in India’s previous three ODI series, set up the chase with a stand of 47. It was Coulter-Nile who broke through, having Dhawan caught behind. The middle order built partnerships all the way down till the death, the highest being 85 between Raina and Rayudu and the lowest 46 between Pujara and Rohit. While Rohit took 87 balls for his 66, Raina and Rayudu made 83 and 70 at more than a run a ball, not allowing the asking-rate to go much beyond eight an over. After Raina fell to Maxwell with the score on 236 in the 43rd over, Rayudu seemed to have settled matters when he hit the legspinner Fawad Ahmed for successive sixes in the 46th. However, Coulter-Nile was not prepared to give in.

SA to stick with two specialist spinners

South Africa’s bowlers were largely to blame for the loss in the first ODI, but AB de Villiers was particularly enamoured of the prospect of fielding two frontline spinners

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Colombo22-Jul-2013

AB de Villiers said Aaron Phangiso bowled well at the death in the first ODI•AFP

South Africa sunk to their second-heaviest defeat ever, in terms of runs, on Saturday, but AB de Villiers said he would seek to employ a similar strategy against Sri Lanka in the second ODI. South Africa’s bowlers were largely to blame for the loss, conceding 320 for 5, and 137 in the last 12 overs, but de Villiers was particularly enamoured of the prospect of fielding two frontline spinners.Robin Peterson and Aaron Phangiso bowled only 14 overs collectively in the first match, taking 1 for 80 between them, but had done enough to persuade de Villiers they were both worth sticking with. Both frontline spinners are left-armers and Sri Lanka are likely to field five left-hand batsmen in the top eight. The part-time offspin of JP Duminy is also available to South Africa, though he did travel for 51 in his seven overs in the first match. With the R Premadasa pitch expected to play slower on Tuesday, having already sustained 82 overs of wear in the first match, de Villiers felt all his slow bowlers were capable of making an impact.”I’d like to have both of the spinners in there,” de Villiers said. “I enjoyed the fact that we played a lot of frontline spinners, even though they didn’t take a lot of wickets. It’s a nice style of attack for us. There are a few right-handers as well in the team. I think they both bowl well to left-handers. Aaron especially showed that against Kumar Sangakkara right at the death. Under a lot of pressure he bowled a really good over. I truly believe they have the experience and the skill – Robin, Aaron and JP, to adapt to certain batters whether they are right or left-handers, and I’ll try to bowl them at the right times.”JP is just a part-time bowler still, but he is handy, especially to left-handers. He’ll pretty much bowl in every game and he’s definitely part of our plans. We wouldn’t like to experiment too much with our side. I believe the best XI played two days ago. We’d like to stay as close as possible to that XI with the odd change here and there.”De Villiers also called for improvement from his side in the field, after a shabby showing in the first game. South Africa have built a reputation for being one of the best fielding sides in the world, but allowed the heat and humidity to affect their performance, de Villiers said, though the only dropped catch came as early as the first over.”We’re not the best fielding team in the world yet. We’ve got the potential, so it’s a bit frustrating to see us field like that. I think the boys have learnt from their mistakes. It was a long 50 overs in the field and the afternoon was quite hot, which is not an excuse, but something new to the guys, something they couldn’t adapt to. In this game they’ll hopefully know what to expect and take a few matchwinning catches and a couple of run-outs. The bowlers certainly need them.”Hashim Amla has not been declared fit after suffering from muscle spasms in his neck last Friday, but de Villiers said he had recovered smoothly since then, and hoped Amla would bring some much-needed experience into the top order. South Africa are missing their most seasoned batsmen in Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis, who have not come on tour.”Hash is still not 100% and we’ll have to reassess that at training, when he’ll have a light net and then final reassessments tonight and tomorrow morning. It’s important to start well, but also to stabilise the innings if we don’t start well, which we also didn’t do in that match. We got it wrong in both departments. I’d like to focus on the basics tomorrow and get that in place, even if we have a bad start.”

Jogador sai desfigurado de campo no Estadual do Piauí, mas passa bem

A imagem é chocante.
