Johann Myburgh smashed half a dozen sixes in his half-century that boosted Hampshire to a match-winning total against Leeward Islands in Antigua. Myburgh, who shared an opening partnership of 63 in 7.3 overs with Jimmy Adams, scored 76 off 57 balls and batted nearly the whole innings. Hampshire’s middle order failed, though, until Benny Howell came to the crease and provided an aggressive finishing touch to the innings, ransacking 29 off 12 balls at the death. They reached a total of 156 for 5, with offspinner Justin Athanaze taking 3 for 24 for Leeward.Leeward made a steady start to the chase before Hamza Riazuddin struck in the fifth and seventh overs to reduce them to 38 for 2, after they had been 35 for 0. They then lost Kieran Powell for 29 before Simon Jones ripped out three more wickets, leaving Leeward in tatters at 67 for 6. Danny Briggs and Chris Wood also took two wickets apiece as Hampshire bowled out Leeward for 110 to secure a 46-run victory. It was Leeward’s third consecutive defeat and they have only pride to play for in their final league game.Trinidad & Tobago won a low-scoring contest against Canada off the final ball in Antigua. Chasing a target of 129, T&T had made a rapid start, passing 30 in just over three overs, when they lost Adrian Barath, who was bowled by Parth Desai. The run-rate dropped dramatically thereafter as Darren Bravo batted with a Test like strike-rate of 38 during his 8 off 21 balls. And after Lendl Simmons was dismissed for 29, Daren Ganga took charge of anchoring the innings and seeing T&T through to the finish. He too took 31 balls for his unbeaten 27 but ensured that wickets did not fall even though the scoring was slow. With the lower-order batsmen for company, Ganga secured T&T’s five-wicket win.Canada had also batted slowly after they lost opener Hiral Patel for 7 in their innings. Ruvindu Gunasekara made 39 off 40 balls, while Zubin Surkari contributed 42 off 49. They added 63 in ten overs for the second wicket, a sound platform but the innings desperately needed momentum. Sherwin Ganga dismissed two middle-order batsmen and ran out another to ensure that Canada would not be able to finish their innings on a strong note. They ended up with only 128 even though they had five wickets in hand.

Liverpool handed boost ahead of Spurs

Liverpool have been handed a huge boost ahead of their Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur tonight.

What’s the latest?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday (via liverpoolfc.com), Jurgen Klopp revealed that Roberto Firmino, who has been sidelined since picking up a foot injury in the Reds’ FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City last month, has now returned to first-team training and could be available for selection at Anfield this evening.

When asked whether the centre-forward could feature against Spurs, the 54-year-old Liverpool manager said: “I don’t know, but he is back in training, so now we have to make a decision about that.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

“The foot thing didn’t let him do a lot. We had to let it settle and now we have to make sure that he has a few proper sessions. Obviously, we have enough games still, so it’s very important that we have to make sure that we get him in the best possible shape.

“I didn’t make a decision but it might be possible, that it makes for him more sense just to train through the weekend and be then a big step closer for Tuesday, for example. But let’s see. Yesterday he was in training, was great.”

Klopp will be buzzing

With injury having plagued Firmino’s 2021/22 campaign thus far, Klopp will be buzzing that it appears as if Liverpool could call upon the striker against Tottenham tonight if he is required.

Indeed, despite having made just 18 Premier League appearances – only nine of which have come as starts – this season, the £34.2m-rated Brazilian has impressed whenever he has featured, scoring five goals, providing three assists and creating two big chances for his team-mates.

He has also taken 1.3 shots, made 0.6 key passes and completed 0.7 dribbles per game, with these returns seeing the £180k-per-week forward average a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.96.

It would seem unlikely that the 30-year-old will be selected to start against Tottenham tonight, but if the Reds require a spark of creativity to break the deadlock against Antonio Conte’s outfit, Firmino is certainly a fantastic option to be able to call upon from the bench, if he is fit enough to be included in the matchday squad.

His potential availability will undoubtedly be a huge boost for Klopp and his team ahead of what is a must-win fixture in the Premier League title race.

Australia must plan for the future – Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh has praised the togetherness of an England squad that he believes are favourites to secure the Ashes with victory in the third Test

Andrew Miller at the WACA15-Dec-2010

Steve Waugh said Australia must pick a group of players and stick with them through think and thin•Associated Press

Steve Waugh has praised the togetherness of an England squad that he believes are favourites to secure the Ashes with victory in the third Test at Perth, but says that the time has come for Australia’s selectors to identify the men that they believe can return the Test team to winning ways, and then back them through thick and thin – in much the same way that he himself was given time to learn his game in the early years of his own international career.Though Waugh finished his career with a formidable record of 10927 runs in 168 Test appearances, his early days coincided with the absolute nadir of Australia’s fortunes, as he was selected on a whim as a 20-year-old allrounder in December 1985, in a team that had been ravaged by the retirements of three key players in Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh, as well as a raft of defections to a rebel tour of South Africa.”Allan Border was captain and he’d played more Tests than the rest of the team combined,” Waugh recalled. “That’s a very inexperienced side, this side has still got some experience and good players. But what the selectors have got to do now, that they did then, was have belief in the younger players that they pick. Say, look, we believe in you, you’re the future of Australian cricket, and you’re going to have a bit of leeway.”It’s not always going to be successful all days, and I guess I was the perfect example,” he added. “I didn’t score a hundred until my 26th Test, I never won a Test until my 13th Test for Australia, so you’ve got to see the bigger picture. You can’t just chop and change, if someone fails in one Test and doesn’t look the goods, you’ve got to give them an opportunity.”With that in mind, Waugh was especially critical of the treatment meted out to the left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty, who has been jettisoned from the squad after just two Test appearances, in favour of Western Australia’s Michael Beer. “We’ve been going through a lot of players,” he said, “but you don’t just chop and change for the sake of it.”It’s a great honour to play for your country, and I feel disappointed for someone like Doherty who’s played two Tests and now he’s gone. I think you pick a player, believe in them, and give them a good opportunity, and you don’t change that side unless you believe you can improve the side by getting another player in.”Speaking at the MCC World Cricket Committee meeting in Perth, Waugh believed that Australia’s spirit in adversity would give them a fighting chance in the forthcoming contest, but backed England’s greater cohesion to hold sway – an upshot, he added, that would heap huge pressure on Ricky Ponting’s tenure as Australia’s captain.”Ricky acknowledged [the pressure] at the start of the series,” said Waugh. “He would be thinking he can turn it around because that’s always been the case for Australian sides that I’ve played in, but questions will be asked for sure if they lose this series. It’s unlikely, looking at form, that they can turn this around, but anything can happen in sport, particularly on this unique wicket which is like no other pitch in the world. It’s only 1-0 down in the five-Test series, and the great uncertainty is what keeps us coming back.”England, however, have looked a formidable unit in the series to date, and Waugh – who has never been shy of stating his opinion on previous Ashes squads – believes that the influence of Andy Flower has been instrumental in moulding an outfit that is becoming the team best placed to inherit Australia’s mantle as the world’s No. 1 side.”They’ve impressed me for a couple of years,” he said. “I noticed the turnaround when England drew three Test matches having lost nine wickets in the fourth innings [at Cardiff, Centurion and Cape Town]. That showed to me a side that was together. Sides that aren’t strong don’t survive those sorts of matches.”That was a turning point for English cricket,” he added. “They look like they enjoy each other’s company, they are playing for each other, and they’ve prepared very well. I like the fact that Flower is their coach, behind the scenes and low-key. They look like they all know their roles and they are playing some good cricket.”All great eras have to come to an end,” he added. “I guess we modelled a bit of our cricket on the great West Indies era, because if you’re smart you look at the best and what they are doing, and look at their blueprint, and modify it to suit your needs. I think you can see England have done that with their cricket. They’ve looked at how we’ve been successful, altered it to suit their players, and now they’re playing their own style.”The net result is an Australian side with no choice but to go for broke in a bid to avoid their first home Ashes defeat in 24 years. “What option have they got?” said Waugh. “They were totally outplayed on a flat pitch at Adelaide. You’ve got to say England were dominant and that will have hurt the Australian side, particularly Ricky. They’ll give everything they’ve got in this Test, and I expect them to really firing up on the first morning, being really positive in their body language, and with a couple of younger players so I expect to see more energy in the field.”It’s a huge Test, and it’s going to be on,” he added. “The WACA is a great place to watch and play Test cricket, the quicks can get it through, it’s exciting, and more than likely it’s a place where players can get injured if they are not switched on. It’s going to be a bit of a battlefield out there.”

Lee gives NSW victory in nail-biter

Brett Lee’s five-for negated Shaun Marsh’s century to give New South Wales the victory against Western Australia at the WACA

A five-wicket haul from Brett Lee earned New South Wales a tense victory against Western Australia, despite Shaun Marsh’s 132 at the WACA. In a tight finish, the equation had come down to 13 needed off 11 balls with Marsh at the crease, and Western Australia were favourites to complete the chase of 260.But Stuart Clark had Marsh caught by Nathan Hauritz, before Lee completed his five-for in the last over to leave the hosts seven runs short of their target. Marsh’s century looked like it would be enough to get his team through after the match had swung like a pendulum during the hosts’ second innings. With 157 required at the halfway point, Marsh and his brother Mitchell took the Warriors to 4 for 198 with over eight overs to go. But Steven Smith, who was left out of the final squad for the first Ashes Test, bowled Mitchell, and then Lee, who last month announced he was ready for a return to international cricket, struck twice in the next over to leave Western Australia in trouble at 7 for 202.Shaun, however, was undeterred; he got to his century and then accelerated to get Western Australia to within touching distance before Clark struck the crucial blow. New South Wales chose to play their first block cautiously, reaching 2 for 88 at the break. Smith then gave the innings some impetus as he got 51 off 43, before Steve O’Keefe ended with a few big hits, notching up four sixes in his 44, which came off 28 balls. The total eventually proved good enough for New South Wales to stay in third position as they picked up four points, while Western Australia got one. Lee’s five wickets and Clark’s two have taken them to joint second place in the list of top wicket-takers in the Ryobi Cup, with 11 each.

As equipes terão direito a três cobranças.

A step towards reclaiming No. 1 rank – Ponting

Australia captain Ricky Ponting hopes the two-Test series in India next month will be a step towards reclaiming the number one Test ranking

Ricky Ponting hopes the two-Test series in India next month will be a step towards Australia reclaiming the No. 1 Test ranking. Australia are presently fourth in the ratings, 14 points behind top-ranked India, and a 2-0 win for the visitors will narrow the gap to four.”It’s an important tour for all of us,” Pointing said before his side’s departure to India. “I don’t expect miracles, but I expect a very high level of performance over the next few weeks. If we happen to play the cricket I know we are capable of in India, and we can win that series, that will do great things for us to get back up near the No. 1 ranking.”Australia and India have been neck-and-neck in Test cricket over the past decade: India won seven matches, including two away, while Australia prevailed in six. Their last tour to India was one of the more one-sided contests, which the hosts won 2-0. In the build-up to this tour, there have been suggestions that it wasn’t ideal preparation ahead of the Ashes that begin later in the year. Ponting, however, dismissed those claims.”There’s been a bit of talk the last few weeks about our preparation into what we’ve got later in the summer, and I definitely couldn’t be happier with it, playing Test cricket at this time of year. I think it will be great to be challenged by a very good team and by the conditions. I think it will be great for us when November (and the Ashes) comes around.”Ponting also called upon the ICC to act quickly on the spot-fixing allegations that have marred Pakistan’s ongoing tour of England. “The events of the last couple of weeks have had a big impact I’m sure around the world on the way that the game is viewed, but that’s completely out of our hands. The ICC needs to be doing whatever it can to get on top of these things as quickly as possible.”Three Pakistan players – Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif – were provisionally suspended by the ICC after the spot-fixing controversy broke during the Lord’s Test. Yesterday, the ICC launched an investigation into the third ODI at The Oval, after receiving information from newspaper prior to the game on Friday, alleging bookies were aware of certain scoring patterns that occurred during the match. Ponting lauded the ICC’s moves to curb the menace, and said there was little players could do except play honest cricket.”They’ve done a pretty good job over the last few weeks already and with this latest allegation, hopefully they will get to the bottom of this pretty quick as well,” Ponting said. “There’s nothing we [players] can do about that. As an Australian cricket team, all we can do is play the best brand of cricket day in and day out.”I think if we all do the right things on the field, hopefully there will be something positive coming back on the newspaper pages about the game of cricket, which is what we will try and achieve.”

Leeds scout Hubers ahead of summer

Leeds United sent scouts to watch Timo Hubers in action this weekend, according to reports…

What’s the word?

Football Insider claim that the Yorkshire giants were in attendance as FC Koln defeated Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon.

The 25-year-old centre-back played the full game but conceded an own goal in their 3-1 win, though he seemingly impressed. He registered five clearances and three interceptions, whilst he also won seven duels, per SofaScore.

United are in the market for a new central defender and the club have stepped up their interest in the 6 foot 3 German colossus, who is also believed to have a £6.7m release clause at the RheinEnergieStadion.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

Marsch mission

After the weekend’s Premier League fixtures, only rock-bottom Norwich City (69) have leaked more goals than the Whites (68), so it’s abundantly clear that manager Jesse Marsch needs to bolster his backline heading into next season.

Their fortunes defensively have gradually improved but he is still light on solid and reliable options, so Hubers represents a cheap but viable option.

Indeed, journalist Pete O’Rourke believes he’d be an ideal signing for the former RB Leipzig boss. He told GIVEMESPORT:

“He’s a talented young player from Koln as well, so he definitely fits the bill for Leeds United because they’ve been forced to have a bit of a makeshift central defence this season.”

Hubers has been Steffen Baumgart’s standout player with Koln on the cusp of qualifying for a place in Europe, having averaged a squad-high average WhoScored rating of 7.09.

Only one other player is winning more aerial duels per game than the 25-year-old (2.5), whilst he leads the way for interceptions (2.7 per game) and isn’t far behind for tackles either (2.1 per game).

Once lauded for being an “exemplary” professional by Hannover 96’s sporting director Gerhard Zuber, it certainly appears as if Hubers would be a player that Marsch would love to sign heading into next season, one that wouldn’t take too much out of the transfer kitty.

After sending scouts to watch him excel, it seems only right that the German titan is amongst their top targets this summer.

AND in other news, Orta had a Leeds disasterclass on “outrageous” £50m dynamo, he’s better than Rodrigo…

Newcastle: Ryder talks up Bremer chances

Newcastle United’s prior relationship with Gleison Bremer’s agency could be key as they pursue the Torino centre-back, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder says.

The lowdown

Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via The Chronicle) has named Newcastle among a lengthy list of clubs interested in Bremer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid were also identified as admirers.

Bremer is represented by CAA Base, whose clients also include Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

The 25-year-old, who signed a contract extension as recently as February, has started every Serie A game for which he’s been available this season.

The latest

Ryder confirms that Newcastle have been watching Bremer and notes that Torino have ‘leaked’ €50million (£41million) price tag to the press in Italy.

The Magpies may hold a ‘trump card’ over their many competitors because of CAA Base’s ‘relationship with head of recruitment Steve Nickson’.

The verdict

This would be a real coup for Nickson and Newcastle.

Bremer is a dominant centre-back, ranking in the 95th percentile for aerial duels won per 90 minutes, and his average of 2.35 blocks per 90 (96th) also suggests he’s something of a warrior.

But that’s not to say the Brazilian’s old-fashioned. In fact, he records a high volume of dribbles (82nd percentile), indicating that he has a great deal of confidence in possession.

He also defends on the front-foot, slotting into the 98th percentile for pressures and leading the way in Europe’s top five leagues for interceptions per 90 minutes. That means he’s making more than renowned specialists like N’Golo Kante.

Journalist Maxi Angelo says he should be a contender for the Serie A Defender of the Season award, while Tifo Football’s Seb Stafford-Bloor has uniquely described him as ‘a vending machine of a centre-half’.

In other news, one Newcastle player was rated just 4/10 vs Leicester.
