David Hussey's hundred upstages Test candidates

Australian supporters have been desperate to see big runs from a batsman named Hussey in the lead-up to the Ashes, but it was Michael’s younger brother David who hit form on the opening day of Victoria’s Sheffield Shield contest

Australian supporters have been desperate to see big runs from a batsman named Hussey in the lead-up to the Ashes, but it was Michael’s younger brother David who hit form on the opening day of Victoria’s Sheffield Shield contest in Sydney. While David Hussey, a limited-overs specialist at international level, is not being discussed as a contender to face England, he reminded everyone of his talent with an unbeaten 102 as Victoria collected 4 for 211 before the final session was washed out.The New South Wales players expected to be in the Test XI had quieter days, with Shane Watson taking care of Michael Hill on 79, and Nathan Hauritz leaking runs over a couple of spells. Hauritz had his first serious first-class bowl of the home season and was punished whenever he missed his mark.Hill launched Hauritz for two early sixes as the offspinner gave up 57 runs in nine overs, which wasn’t an encouraging return with the first Test two weeks away. His best chance of a breakthrough came when Hill was missed at long-on by Mitchell Starc.Starc, who took four wickets in Sunday’s ODI against Sri Lanka, was again impressive with the ball and removed Rob Quiney in the opening over and Cameron White (1) in the second session. He could have added Hussey on 71, but Watson dropped the ball above his head.Hussey entered at 2 for 18, following the lbw of Aaron Finch, and took his time before lunch. After the break he started to expand, scoring 75 in the second session, and had struck 17 fours from his 128 balls when the rain arrived. He will be intent on outshining the Test players again on the second day.

A step towards reclaiming No. 1 rank – Ponting

Australia captain Ricky Ponting hopes the two-Test series in India next month will be a step towards reclaiming the number one Test ranking

Ricky Ponting: “If we all do the right thing on the field, hopefully there will be something positive coming back on the newspaper pages”•Getty Images

Ricky Ponting hopes the two-Test series in India next month will be a step towards Australia reclaiming the No. 1 Test ranking. Australia are presently fourth in the ratings, 14 points behind top-ranked India, and a 2-0 win for the visitors will narrow the gap to four.”It’s an important tour for all of us,” Pointing said before his side’s departure to India. “I don’t expect miracles, but I expect a very high level of performance over the next few weeks. If we happen to play the cricket I know we are capable of in India, and we can win that series, that will do great things for us to get back up near the No. 1 ranking.”Australia and India have been neck-and-neck in Test cricket over the past decade: India won seven matches, including two away, while Australia prevailed in six. Their last tour to India was one of the more one-sided contests, which the hosts won 2-0. In the build-up to this tour, there have been suggestions that it wasn’t ideal preparation ahead of the Ashes that begin later in the year. Ponting, however, dismissed those claims.”There’s been a bit of talk the last few weeks about our preparation into what we’ve got later in the summer, and I definitely couldn’t be happier with it, playing Test cricket at this time of year. I think it will be great to be challenged by a very good team and by the conditions. I think it will be great for us when November (and the Ashes) comes around.”Ponting also called upon the ICC to act quickly on the spot-fixing allegations that have marred Pakistan’s ongoing tour of England. “The events of the last couple of weeks have had a big impact I’m sure around the world on the way that the game is viewed, but that’s completely out of our hands. The ICC needs to be doing whatever it can to get on top of these things as quickly as possible.”Three Pakistan players – Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif – were provisionally suspended by the ICC after the spot-fixing controversy broke during the Lord’s Test. Yesterday, the ICC launched an investigation into the third ODI at The Oval, after receiving information from newspaper prior to the game on Friday, alleging bookies were aware of certain scoring patterns that occurred during the match. Ponting lauded the ICC’s moves to curb the menace, and said there was little players could do except play honest cricket.”They’ve done a pretty good job over the last few weeks already and with this latest allegation, hopefully they will get to the bottom of this pretty quick as well,” Ponting said. “There’s nothing we [players] can do about that. As an Australian cricket team, all we can do is play the best brand of cricket day in and day out.”I think if we all do the right things on the field, hopefully there will be something positive coming back on the newspaper pages about the game of cricket, which is what we will try and achieve.”

Pakistan's tour of NZ includes six ODIs

February 5 – 6th ODI, Auckland

Pakistan will tour New Zealand at the end of the year for a series of two Tests, six ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals, New Zealand Cricket has announced. The original plan was to have three Tests, but the boards agreed to reduce it to two and fit in more limited-overs games for the sake of preparing for the 50-over World Cup to follow in February-March.”We have agreed to move from three Tests to two to allow the addition of another ODI and three Twenty20 internationals, which makes sense for both teams in the final weeks before the World Cup commences,” NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said. “The mix of games also makes it easier to fit into what is a condensed window of international cricket this season.”The shape of the international schedule allows the maximum opportunity for (New Zealand players’) participation in the domestic Twenty20 competition and also to provide a real focus on Twenty20 during the period from early December to early January for both domestic and international cricket.”The tour commences on Boxing Day with the first of three Twenty20s. The Test series begins on January 7 with the first game at Seddon Park in Hamilton, and the second at the Basin Reserve in Wellington starting January 15. The teams will stay back in Wellington for the first of six ODIs, starting January 22, at the Westpac Stadium. The remaining matches will be shared out between the major international venues, with the exception of the University Oval in Dunedin.Pakistan last toured New Zealand in 2009-10, which was actually their ‘home series’. Due to the volatile security situation in Pakistan, the PCB had to schedule their home series in New Zealand itself. The teams played out a closely fought three-Test series, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Abel relaciona Léo e Rodolfo, deixa Airton fora, mas esconde time do Flu

-Não vou dar o time.

Série A, Série B…

Nós estudamos bastante o time deles.

Postura do time

Convite do Atlético-MG

Celtic can amend Toney mistake with Semenyo

Reported Celtic transfer target Antoine Semenyo has dropped an update on a potential summer switch.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, the Bristol City centre-forward, who is believed to have been scouted by Celtic’s Craig Strachan earlier this month, revealed that, despite the increasing interest in his services, he is in no rush to seal a move away from Ashton Gate this summer.

Speaking about his future, the 22-year-old said: “It has always been a dream of mine from when I was young [to move to a big club]. But whether it comes now or in a few years, I’m not in any kind of a rush. I just want to keep working on my game so that if I do ever get to the top then hopefully there’ll be no problems.”

Postecoglou can amend Toney mistake with Semenyo

Considering just how close Celtic were to sealing the signing of then-Peterborough United centre-forward Ivan Toney in the summer of 2020, it would appear as if Ange Postecoglou now has the perfect opportunity to amend the Bhoys’ mistake in missing out on a deal for the 25-year-old hitman – by landing Semenyo this summer.

Indeed, it was reported that Celtic had gone as far as to agree personal terms with the Posh striker, with the club’s chairman, Barry Fry, claiming that Toney was so eager to secure a switch to the Hoops that he would have walked to Celtic Park to finalise the deal.

However, after the English side rejected Celtic’s £5m offer for the striker, Peterborough subsequently accepted Brentford’s £6.5m – rising to £10m with add-ons – bid for the centre-forward, with the 25-year-old going on to pen a five-year deal with the Bees.

The following season, Celtic’s decision not to match Brentford’s offer for the Northampton born target-man immediately proved a costly one, with Toney bagging an astonishing 33 goals and providing ten assists over 48 Championship appearances on the way to firing his side to the Premier League, while Celtic were blown out of the water in the Premiership title race by their most fierce of rivals.

And, having so far bagged six goals and registered two assists over his 21 Premier League outings this season, it has been reported that Brentford will be demanding a figure in the region of £35m, should any potential suitor wish to purchase the 25-year-old – with West Ham and Chelsea both having been linked.

As such, considering the fact that the “dangerous” – in the words of Phil Parkinson – Semenyo is enjoying a similar Championship campaign to that of Toney last time out, with the £1.08m-rated striker having bagged six goals, registered eight assists and created five big chances over his 20 league outings, it would appear an extremely wise for Postecoglou to simply stump up the fee required to land the 22-year-old this summer – or else Celtic could be rueing their indecision in the transfer market once again next year.
