Rangers in contract talks with Goldson

Rangers remain in talks with Connor Goldson over the possibility of a new contract, the club’s managing director Stewart Robertson has told Sky Sports.

The lowdown

The 29-year-old, who featured in the 2020/21 Premiership Team of the Season after putting together a ‘virtually perfect’ campaign to help Rangers end their Glasgow rivals’ run of nine consecutive league titles, could be into the final months of his Ibrox career.

His £27,000-per-week deal is up at the end of May, and The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell wrote recently that the defender is expected to leave, along with fellow out-of-contract duo Allan McGregor and Steven Davis.

The latest

Robertson has said that decisions will be made on the Rangers trio in the next few months, but dialogue with all three players is continuing.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Goldson, the Ibrox chief said: “We’re not resigned to losing him. I know Ross [Wilson, sporting director] is having regular conversations with all the players whose contracts are expiring in the summer and that’s something that will be addressed in the coming months.”

The verdict

Perhaps the key to Goldson’s future lies in Rangers’ fortunes for the rest of the season.

A recent report from The Scottish Daily Express suggested that winning the Premiership, and potentially securing the £35m bonus which comes from Champions League group stage qualification, could be a game-changer. That may enable Rangers to award the centre-back the kind of lucrative new deal he’s perhaps demanding.

It’s worth noting, however, that the situation is different with McGregor and Davis – at the ages of 40 and 37 respectively, they won’t be far off retirement.

Cláudio Tencati é o novo técnico do Atlético-GO

MatériaMais Notícias

Atlético-GO contratou o técnico Cláudio Tencati para substituir João Paulo Sanches.

Spurs plotting out-of-window Barker move

According to Football Insider journalist Wayne Veysey, Tottenham Hotspur are in a race with Leicester City to sign non-league striker sensation Fin Barker.

The Lowdown: Rising star…

The 18-year-old has apparently caught the eye of top tier scouts up and down the country for his sensational form at current club Mickleover FC in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Chiefs from English top flight clubs have been alerted to Barker’s potential as well as Championship sides, with Nottingham Forest among those taking a firm interest.

Both Premier League and clubs from the EFL are able to sign anyone from outside the professional leagues at any time of year, even beyond a conventional transfer window.

The Latest: Tottenham plotting move…

According to Veysey and Football Insider, Spurs and Leicester are now ‘plotting moves’ ahead of the summer for Barker.

As well as this, both sides are tipped as possible favourites to sign the prolific striker given they can apparently make an offer ‘beyond the level’ of most Premier League sides.

The Verdict: Intriguing update…

It appears Spurs’ scouts are hard at work behind-the-scenes again as they unearth more potentially fruitful talent for the growing Hotspur Way group of exciting youngsters.

Barker could certainly come as one of them if Tottenham sign him outside of January, especially going by his 18-goal haul for Mickleover this season.

Those strikes come after only just making his debut in October, perhaps evidence of his sky high potential.

Man Utd trio struggle in shock FA Cup exit

Dean Henderson, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford were all disappointing in Manchester United’s shock FA Cup fourth round defeat at home to Middlesbrough.

The Red Devils were expected to breeze past their Championship opponents on Friday evening, but another damaging outing unfolded at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho’s goal looked set to send United on their way to victory but a controversial Matt Crooks equaliser took the game to extra-time and the visitors prevailed in a long penalty shootout.

There were three United players who stood out as the worst performers, of those to have played at least 45 minutes of action, and using statistical experts Sofascore we have looked at the men who may be fearing for their place under Ralf Rangnick.

Dean Henderson – 6.8/10

Henderson started between the sticks instead of David De Gea but he did his chances of keeping the Spaniard out permanently very few favours.

While the England international had little to do in the 120 minutes of normal time, five of his 12 long balls were still inaccurate and he played no key passes.

In the shootout, Henderson failed to get close to the penalties, barring one that squirmed under him in sloppy fashion.

Luke Shaw – 7.4/10

Shaw has dipped well below last season’s high standards in 2021/22 and this was another disappointing night at the office for him.

The left-back lost possession a whopping 34 times in total, also losing six out of 14 of his ground duels.

Not only that, but Shaw also only managed to complete four out of nine crosses and long balls apiece, highlighting a sloppy outing from him.

Marcus Rashford – 6.3/10

It was Rashford who took home the lowest rating at Old Trafford, however, as his hugely below-par form continues.

The Englishman lost the ball on 11 occasions overall, missed one big chance and won only two out of eight ground duels, meaning he and Shaw combined to lose 55% of their individual battles on the ball.

Rashford also won no aerial duels and failed to make any defensive contribution, highlighting his lack of effective pressing from the front.

Lancashire batsmen fail to capitalise on starts

Lancashire might consider they slightly underachieved on the second day of the 250th Roses match

Jon Culley at Headingley30-May-2010
ScorecardHaving put together solid partnerships for each of the first three wickets, Lancashire might consider they slightly underachieved on the second day of the 250th Roses match. When every batsman sets down the foundations for a good innings, at least one would be expected to build something substantial. In the event, none did, and while Ashwell Prince set himself impressively for a meaningful send-off in the last match of his Lancashire stint, the South African will feel he let an opportunity slip in being out for 78.Nonetheless, Lancashire have the upper hand, although after a day lost to the weather, the way to a positive outcome may need some canny declarations. Yorkshire’s bowlers worked hard but have not found the pitch particularly helpful. There is not too much pace and the ball has rarely deviated much.It was hard going for spectators, too. Some gathered in the lower tier seats of the unfinished pavilion but nowhere offered shelter from a fierce and chilly wind. Shirts rippled and flags stretched for much of the day.Lancashire won the toss and revealed a changed batting line-up, in which Luke Sutton dropped back to No. 7 after his three-match run as opener, an experiment that was skewed slightly by the hundred he made against Somerset at the start of the run.The new team of Paul Horton and Stephen Moore looked better equipped and were going along solidly, taming the new ball, until Horton pushed at a delivery from Oliver Hannon-Dalby and was caught at third slip. Still, their partnership was the equal, at 53, of Lancashire’s highest for the first wicket this season. The arrival of Prince alongside Moore denied Yorkshire any quick follow-up to their breakthrough, the pair seeing Lancashire through to lunch satisfactorily at 99 for 1. Tino Best, wicketless, was looking visibly frustrated at times, while Ajmal Shahzad, back home after England duty in the Caribbean, probably needed some overs. However, his pace is always liable to pose problems and did so for Moore, into his 40s and looking to kick on, when a ball that hit the pitch hard contrived to skid rather than bounce and slipped under his defences. Moore stared ruefully at the pitch as he turned for the pavilion but there were not many balls that behaved similarly.Coming early in the second session, the wicket encouraged Yorkshire but again there was a long wait for more success. Mark Chilton had a hairy moment when he edged Shahzad but the ball somehow went between the first and second slips with neither able to react.Once he had settled, Chilton began to find gaps in the field regularly but like Moore he found his progress ended just as he must have felt well set. This time Rashid was rewarded for persistence, three overs before tea. The legspinner bowled with discipline but was into his fifth over before he was able to make something happen, getting some bounce and enough turn to induce an edge from Mark Chilton, taken one-handed by Jacques Rudolph at slip to end a 27-over partnership of 81.At the other end, however, nothing much had troubled Prince, with a second century for Lancashire seemingly there for the taking. But he, too, failed to deliver the pay-off, going back to a ball from Steve Patterson that looked at first to be one he could despatch towards the off-side boundary but which maybe bounced more than he expected, the upshot being that he somehow jabbed the ball straight to short extra cover.Croft was then caught at mid off in what was undoubtedly the poorest piece of cricket of the day as Rashid began a new spell with a chest-high full toss and the allrounder miscued an attempted heave to midwicket.Lancashire are well placed and if Tom Smith, unbeaten on 46, can buck the trend and make his good start count they will be in better shape still.

Celtic: Juranovic gave Gers a "pumping"

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side threw down a huge gauntlet in the Premiership title race with a devastating performance in tonight’s Old Firm clash, with the Bhoys running out comfortable 3-0 winners at Parkhead.

In a whirlwind first half, Reo Hatate continued the breathtaking start to his Celtic career with two stunning long-range strikes that saw Celtic race into a two-goal lead, before the Japan international put Liel Abada on a plate with a pinpoint cross to make it 3-0 shortly before the interval.

The second half was much less dramatic, with the Hoops appearing happy to drop further back and allow the visitors more time on the ball – something that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side failed to capitalise on, with the scoreline remaining 3-0 when the final whistle blew.

However, while Hatate will undoubtedly steal tomorrow morning’s headlines, it will perhaps be the performance of Josip Juranovic that will have most pleased Postecoglou on Wednesday night – as the right-back played a crucial role in a victory that Chris Sutton dubbed an “absolute pumping” of the former league leaders.

“Absolutely outstanding”

Over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch, the Croatia international turned in a performance of the highest quality – both in a defensive and offensive capacity.

At the back, the £3.6m-rated defender made five tackles, one interception, two clearances, blocked two shots and won six of his nine duels – a success rate of 67%.

Going forwards, the 26-year-old completed one cross, three long balls, made one key pass and enjoyed 63 touches of the ball – the seventh-most of any player to feature in the match.

These returns saw the £16k-per-week dynamo earn a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.7, ranking him as the joint third-best player to feature in the derby – with Sutton dubbing his display as “absolutely outstanding.”

Indeed, it is easy to see why the former Celtic centre-forward felt this way, as Juranovic’s calmness in possession of the ball, solidity when defending and ability to set his side off on counter-attacks was clear for all to see on Wednesday, with the defender playing a crucial role in what is arguably the Bhoys’ biggest result of the season.

Volcanic ash cloud threatens T20 travel plans

The volcanic ash cloud which continues to close UK and much of European airspace is threatening to have a major impact on the World Twenty20

The volcanic ash cloud which continues to close UK and much of European airspace is threatening to have a major impact on the World Twenty20 in West Indies because London is a transit point for many teams through to the Caribbean.Ireland and Zimbabwe are already located in the region, but Afghanistan’s journey has been disrupted and the longer the restrictions are in place the greater the chance of chaos to the travel plans of the other competing nations.Robert Bryan, the tournament director, said he still expected Afghanistan to arrive in the next few days despite the disruption. “We expect that Afghanistan will arrive here, notwithstanding the volcano dust in Europe, over this weekend.”England could be the most severely impacted side. An ECB spokesman told Cricinfo they are monitoring the situation and will make a decision in a few days time as to the arrangements for the team – who are due to leave next weekend – although there seem precious few alternatives with the nearby European airports such as Paris and Frankfurt also closed. The other issue is that a number of players are currently in India at the IPL and won’t be able to return to the UK until the airspace is reopened.India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh are teams who will be likely to travel through London to West Indies next week, but the latest reports suggest the skies won’t clear for at least a couple more days. One option for them could be to fly via the Middle East and then the United States so that they skirt the problem areas in Europe.Australia and New Zealand will probably be able to avoid the problems by flying via the United States if the issue persists, while South Africa may also be able to use the US or fly direct to the Caribbean. The advance team from ICC were forced to change their travel plans to West Indies this weekend, while ICC President David Morgan and ECB chairman Giles Clarke will take part in the board meeting via video conference having been unable to travel to Dubai from London.Tino Best, who has signed as an overseas player with Yorkshire, could have his debut delayed as he is unable to fly from the Caribbean to England. UK airspace is closed until at least 0100BST (0000GMT) on Monday.
