It’s been a Transfer Window to be proud of for West Ham fans

The transfer window is shutting and as usual a lot of clubs have left the majority of their business to the final hours.

West Ham however got their deals done early and it has been, on the whole, a very impressive transfer window for the Hammers.

It all started with the signing of Mauro Zarate from Velez Sarsfield. Zarate was pretty impressive during his short time in the Premier League previously with Birmingham City. He then went on to have a decent spell at Lazio, and then moved onto Inter Milan where he struggled to get going. On returning to his home country of Argentina with Velez Sarsfield he rediscovered his scoring touch. And now his first few appearances for West Ham have certainly looked promising, even scoring a debut goal against Crystal Palace.

The best early performer of the new signings was next through the door as Cheikhou Kouyate signed from Belgian champions, Anderlecht. The Senegalese international is only 24-years-old and will only grow as a player. An excellent capture for the Hammers.

An Englishmen was next through the Boleyn Ground gates, as Aaron Cresswell joined from Ipswich Town after making the Championship Team of the Year last season. Like Kouyate, Aaron is only 24 and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the Premier League. A signing in the left-back position was certainly a necessity for West Ham and Cresswell may well be the man to fill it.

Chelsea and Spurs legend Gus Poyet’s son was the next signing as Diego left Charlton Athletic. Poyet is only 19 and is certainly one for the future. He was highly regarded as a future star by Charlton fans and has impressed so far in his sporadic appearances for West Ham. His passing range and composure are fantastic for a player in the infancy of his career, due to these attributes he suits a deep playmaker role which is unlikely to be utilised under Sam Allardyce, however, he’s a player for the future and he could well play under a new manager very soon once West Ham move into the Olympic Stadium.

The Hammers splashed the cash on World Cup star Enner Valencia and on paper he is a very exciting prospect indeed. He has little ‘big league’ experience after signing from Mexican club Pachuca and we are yet to see much of the poacher but my initial thoughts are that he doesn’t appear to fit the system that West Ham currently play. It’s a bit suspicious that £12million was spent on a player who doesn’t fit the team’s formation but perhaps Big Sam didn’t have much of a say on this one.

The Hammers also made their first of two loan signings when Arsenal full-back Carl Jenkinson joined. Arsenal made the shrewd acquisitions of Debuchy and Chambers and therefore no longer needed the promising right-back. I’m personally very pleased with the capture of Jenkinson, but we are yet to see any of the 22-year-old as he arrived injured/unfit – time will tell.

The latest signing was revealed to the West Ham fans before the dismal defeat to Southampton on Saturday with former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song signing on loan from Barcelona.

Mohamed Diame seems to have finally got his big move away from West Ham, but not quite to the top 4 side he was after as Hull have agreed a fee for the 27-year-old. Therefore Alex Song joins Kouyate and Noble as the prime suspects for the centre midfield role. A good signing for sure, but unusual, as Song said he turned down Champions League football opportunities to sign for West Ham because the Hammers are moving into the Olympic Stadium and he wants to play a part in making West Ham a ‘big club’ (although he has only signed on a year-long deal). Could be a genius move – we’ll have to wait and see.

A centre-back is needed and there is likely to be at least one more deadline day signing before 11pm tonight, but that’s the West Ham transfer dealings thus far and in my opinion, fans should be impressed with the club’s business this summer.

Stoke star puzzled by England exclusion

Matthew Etherington says he is puzzled by Stoke players being continually overlooked for England recognition.

The Potters winger has urged Three Lions

boss Roy Hodgson to visit the Britannia Stadium and cast his eye over striker Peter Crouch

and defender Ryan Shawcross.

Crouch, 31, scored both goals as Stoke won 2-0 against weekend visitors Swansea, taking his tally to five goals in seven games this season. However, he has not played for his country since scoring in the 2-1 home defeat by France in a November 2010 friendly.

Potters captain Shawcross is still to make his senior international bow after representing England Under-21s and recently turned down an invitation from Wales boss Chris Coleman to switch allegiance. Etherington told Sky Sports:

“Perhaps the England manager needs a map. You would think so because there’s no doubt Crouchie should be in the squad. His international record is second to none and since he’s came here he’s been scoring regularly. He’s priceless for us. Ryan should be in the frame as well, but you play for Stoke and there seems to be a certain stigma.”

Taking its toll on West Ham’s transfer activity

West Ham United co-owner, David Sullivan, admits the club are still carrying the financial burden of the Carlos Tevez saga which relegated Sheffield United back in 2007, according to Daily Mail reports.

Sullivan admitted West Ham still owe the Blades £10 million in compensation, as Tevez’s winner against Manchester United saved the club from relegation and effectively sent the Yorkshiremen back to the Championship, despite the Argentine being  ineligible to play.

He said: “We have an eight-figure sum still outstanding over the Tevez affair, even though we have been playing it down over the past two years.” (Daily Mail)

Manager, Sam Allardyce has been shrewd in the transfer market, bringing in the likes of Jussi Jaaskelainen and George McCartney in the summer transfer window, while Kevin Nolan proved to be an inspirational signing last year and scored the winner in Saturday’s opening day victory over Aston Villa, but Sullivan admits the debt has hindered the Hammers’ spending.

He claimed: “We’ve done some good business and brought in some real quality despite our still-limited resources.

“That amount has to be paid off over the next 12 months, which does take its toll on our transfer activity.”

Paul Jewell leaves Ipswich Town

have confirmed that Paul Jewell has left the club by mutual consent following a disappointing start to the Championship season.

Jewell joined the club in January 2011 and led them to a 13th place finish and followed that up by finishing 15th last season. But just one win in their opening 12 Championship games this season has seen Ipswich slump to the bottom of the league, four  a drift from safety.

A statement by club owner Marcus Evans on the club’s official website reads: “Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this Football Club than Paul Jewell.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the Club if we go our separate ways.

“I’m bitterly disappointed – as is Paul – that it has not worked out as we had hoped when he became our manager 21 months ago and I would like to put on record my thanks for his services to the Club and wish him every success in the future.”

Paul Jewell said: “We all know that football is a results business though and I’ve never hidden from the fact that our results have not been good enough.

“It’s been a privilege to be manager of such a fantastic football club and I want to thank the staff and the supporters for the backing they have given me in my time at the Club and wish Ipswich Town the best of fortunes ahead.”

Assistant manager Chris Hutchings will take over as caretaker manager while a search for Jewell’s replacement gets under way.

THREE reasons why Adnan Januzaj had to feature for Manchester United

Getting eliminated from the FA Cup and sitting in fifth place in the Premier League was not the end of Manchester United fans’ troubles.

The Red Devils lost 2-0 to Olympiakos and are now looking for at least two goals at Old Trafford to save whatever they can from this season.

The home team became the very first Greek club to beat Manchester United and led to the Scotsman achieving another negative record.

There was one man that could have brought solutions up front tonight: Adnan Januzaj. Here are three reasons why the youngster’s omission was inexcusable.

1) Januzaj’s been the heartbeat of United’s attack so far this season.

2) You can’t trust Tom Cleverley to do anything.

3) By leaving Januzaj out Moyes leaves himself at the mercy of disgruntled United fans.

Jason Roberts leading T-shirt boycott

Reading’s Jason Roberts has announced that he will refuse to wear Kick It Out T-shirts this weekend in protest at the F.A.’s handling of the John Terry scandal. The veteran striker has urged the Premier League’s other black players to join his boycott of the anti-racism campaign, suggesting it has failed to stop racial abuse in football.

It is believed that brothers Anton and Rio Ferdinand, who have been at the heart of the John Terry scandal, will join Roberts as will a number of senior black footballers, however several Premier League managers have spoken out in order to quash the revolt.

Following John Terry’s announcement that he would not appeal against his four game ban and fine handed to him by the F.A. as a punishment for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand last year, 34-year-old Roberts told Sky Sports News “Certainly a four-game ban is nowhere near what people would expect for something like this.

“It seems like the authorities don’t have the stomach to take this on, and if the players don’t take it on then nobody will.

“You know we’ve sat and we’ve spoken about the Serbian FA and their view of what happened out there with the England Under-21s and how you have to take responsibility.”

Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Roberto Mancini have  announced that all of their squad will be wearing the Kick it out T-shirts at the weekend, meaning Roberts could be standing alone in his protest should Ferguson convince Ferdinand to drop his issues with the F.A.

The United boss has spoken out in disagreement with the Royals striker: “I have to disagree with Jason Roberts. I think he is making the wrong point. Everyone should be united, with all the players in the country wearing the Kick it Out warm-up tops.

“I don’t know what point he is trying to make. I don’t know if he is trying to put himself on a different pedestal from everyone. But he really should be supporting all the rest of the players who are doing it” added Ferguson.

The 15 ‘Most Annoying’ Footballers on Twitter…well in my view!

Twitter is essentially a glorified Facebook status update, allowing you to share each and every thought that pops into your head with a global audience. In the right hands this can be a very powerful tool but in the wrong hands, it’s just straight up dangerous. Most of us have the foresight to consider our ‘tweets’ before we set them in virtual stone but footballers appear incapable of such logic, instead using the site to offload a few ‘brain dumps’.

The advent of social media has bestowed us with unprecedented access into the lives of our favourite superstars. We’re now all too readily exposed to an unfiltered stream of mundane and trivial information, which serves only to quash our once idolised view of our sporting icons. I’m sure most players don’t set out to infuriate, annoy or ‘wind-up’, some actually share interesting content, but that doesn’t stop them from further enforcing all the negative stereotypes associated with the modern day footballer.

Joey Barton admits he let himself down

Joey Barton has confessed that he let himself down by being sent off on the final day of last season.

The QPR midfielder was dismissed for violent conduct in the Loftus Road club’s clash with Manchester City, and was subsequently handed down a 12-match ban from the FA.

Barton has since secured a season-long loan to French club Marseille, and has explained his actions at the Etihad Stadium.

“I completely let myself down but it’s not a rational situation. I knew we could be relegated, they could win the league and I’m captain,” he revealed to The Sun.

“There’s a bit of a media spotlight on me so if we go down, I’m going to take a lot of s***.

“I was already getting it on Twitter so pressure started building and I didn’t handle it well.

“My inner chimp doesn’t work well with injustice, it reacts too quickly. Tevez has done what he’s done, I have reacted and the aftermath is…

“I look at it now and it’s almost like it’s not me. I’m like ‘What the f*** were you thinking?’

“At the time in some weird way I thought it was the correct way but, looking at it now, I know it wasn’t.

“I’ve got to learn a lesson from that. The thing it reiterated to me was just how far I am from the person I want to be,” he concluded.

Hengeland’s agent confirms interest

Brede Hangeland’s agent has confirmed that a number of clubs are interested in the Fulham centre-back.

The Norwegian is out of contract at the end of the season, and was the subject of speculation regarding a move to QPR during January.

Although reports have circulated in recent weeks that he could renew his deal at Craven Cottage, no official agreements have been announced, leaving the 31-year-old’s future up in the air.

This lack of certainty has led to rumours that he could move on this summer, and his agent, Rune Hauge, has revealed that a number of European sides are interested in Hangeland:

“There have been some enquiries about what is going on.” He is quoted by Sky Sports.

“That includes top clubs, but no offers. We do not have permission to negotiate with other English clubs yet.”

Hague went on to confirm that discussions with Fulham are ongoing, but that the longer they take the less likely it is that the Scandinavian will stay with the Cottagers:

“We are still negotiating.” Hauge told the Norwegian media.

“But the longer it takes to reach an agreement, the chance that he will stay is decreasing.

“At the same time, Brede is happy at Fulham and the club is happy with him. We will see in one or three months.”

If Hangeland leaves it will be a big blow to the club, with the commanding centre-back a fans’ favourite in west London.

Hugo Lloris craving first team action

Tottenham Hotspur’s disgruntled goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has hinted he may push for a January transfer when he meets up with Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas on his return from international duty, according to the Daily Mail and Sky Sports News.

The French shot-stopper only joined the North London club in the summer, but has been kept out of the Spurs starting XI by veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who has been in a rich vein of form since the start of the season.

Lloris singed from Lyon for £8million plus future incentives on transfer deadline day, but has only made a single Premier League appearance.

The French no.1, who featured in last night’s international friendly against Italy, has spent the season warming-up the bench, and is expected to continue doing so for the North London derby at the weekend.

Although considered the future first-team goalkeeper at White Hart Lane, AVB is struggling to keep Lloris happy, suggesting the player will want a move away in January. Villas-Boas is preparing to hold talks with the disillusioned 25-year-old when he arrives back in London following international duty.

It has been revealed that the French international was being closely watched by Arsenal in the summer, but the Gunners pulled out of making a bid at the last minute.

Wenger has recently announced he is on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, and could attempt to lure Lloris to the Emirates during the imminent transfer window.

Lloris told french newspaper L’Equipe: “I remain a competitor. I want to be on the pitch.

“I feel much at ease at the club, where I have been very, very well received by the players, the fans and people at the club.

“Now you have to ask all those questions [over the No.1 spot] to the coach” he added.

France head coach Didier Deschamps has been vocal about AVB’s decision to pick Friedel over the discontented Hugo Lloris.

The former Juventus and Marseille manager has now told reporters: “He doesn’t play enough at his club and it doesn’t sit very well with him.

“His situation is difficult, burdensome, not ideal.

“Returning to the bench after the performance he made with us in Spain [in the World Cup qualifiers] is not easy. He cannot be satisfied playing only one game out of two or three.

“Of course, he would like to play more. He is getting on with it as best he possibly can but obviously he would like to play more,” added Deschamps.
