Newcastle United’s injury issues at centre-back over the last couple of months have been well documented, with boss Eddie Howe looking to strengthen the position during the summer transfer window.
Long-term injuries to the likes of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, will see the pair miss up to nine months after suffering ACL injuries, with the Magpies’ defence looking light of bodies.
However, Howe has already started to combat the issue, signing Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from fellow Premier League side Bournemouth, but it’s critical that the club continue to pursue other options if they are to regain European football next season.
Numerous names such as Ousmane Diomande and Mario Hermoso have both been touted with a move to Tyneside in recent weeks, with no movement on either deal as yet.
The club have also recently been credited with an interest in another talent, but Howe’s side will need to act quickly if they are to secure his services, especially considering his recent performance at the ongoing European Championships in Germany.
Newcastle must reignite interest in £50m talent
Over the last couple of weeks, Newcastle have been reportedly battling Arsenal for the signature of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi.
Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
The Englishman played a key role in Oliver Glasner’s transformation of the Eagles during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, making 25 appearances – and captaining the side for the vast majority of his outings.
His excellent form in the Premier League caught the attention of England boss Gareth Southgate, who decided to call the 23-year-old up to his squad for the Euros – a decision that has been a superb one by the under-fire coach.
He’s subsequently started the first two outings, starring in both, with last night’s display his best to date, which could see his £50m valuation skyrocket.
Guehi’s stats against Denmark for England
Although it’s been a disappointing start to the competition for England, a couple of players have stood out, demonstrating their quality despite the below-par performances produced by the majority of the squad.
Guehi is one who has been consistently dominant at the back, preventing Southgate’s side from embarrassing results against Serbia and Denmark.
His display alongside John Stones at the back last night was by far his best at the tournament so far, with the Palace star going from strength to strength on the international stage, receiving an 8/10 match rating from the Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick.
In his 90-minute display, Guehi managed to complete 47 passes at a completion rate of 90%, whilst also producing an excellent display out of possession in a game where England failed to impress once more.

It was a magnificent display from Guehi, with Newcastle desperately needing to push on in their attempts to sign the 23-year-old if they are to mount another European push next season.
They could land one of England's leading players – so far – at the Euros and put a statement out to the rest of the contenders for the top four next season by bringing him to St. James' Park.
Arsenal may now turn to a £34 million forward who's been called "similar" to former star Alexis Sanchez, following their failed pursuit of RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko signs new RB Leipzig contract as Arsenal miss out
On Tuesday morning, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano broke some bad news on Arsenal's chase for a prolific new striker.

After chasing a Sesko deal for the best part of a fortnight, with Arsenal making a proposal for the Slovenia international alongside Chelsea and Man United (Fabrizio Romano), he instead opted to pen an improved contract at Leipzig to remain in the Bundesliga.

Since then, Leipzig have confirmed the agreement with Sesko, dealing a transfer blow to the Gunners with zero chance of a hijack at this stage.
It is now back to the drawing board for manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu, who wish to bring in a prolific new front man. Arteta is believed to want a young partner for Kai Havertz in the forward area, and Sesko would have been ideal given the 21-year-old's £55 million release clause in his past contract.
However, with the 6 foot 5 striker now remaining where he is, alternative options for the Gunners are being mooted by sections of the press. Arsenal moves for the likes of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak and Brentford's Ivan Toney appear unlikely at this stage, according to journalist Ed Aarons, as well as Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres.
Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.
The latter commands a marquee £86 million price tag, the value of his release clause, while Isak is also set to cost a pretty penny. Arsenal wish to strengthen other areas of the squad, as well as going forward, so they'll have to weigh their next moves pretty carefully.
Arsenal could turn to £34 million Joshua Zirkzee
As per Aarons, writing in a piece for The Guardian, Bologna star Joshua Zirkzee has re-emerged as a serious option for Edu.
Arsenal could turn their attention to Zirkzee after missing out on a deal for Sesko, coming after he helped Bologna qualify for the Champions League. The Dutchman's deal includes a £34 million release clause, and he's been called "similar" to ex-Arsenal star Sanchez, as per Football Transfers.
"I cannot compare him to anyone. He is Joshua, he is special, he enjoys his football and above all works very hard in training," said manager Thiago Motta, who's now set to join Juventus.
“Since the first day of pre-season, he has always been the first to arrive at the camp. He has become a leader and it’s all to his credit. We just need to keep accompanying him, because he is certainly on the right path.”

Nunez banned for five Uruguay gamesSuarez offers advice for the strikerNunez will miss Suarez's final Uruguay matchTwitterWHAT HAPPENED?
Following Uruguay's semi-final defeat to Colombia at this summer’s Copa America, Nunez and several La Celeste stars flocked into the stands to protect their families from Colombian hooligans. A fight broke out in the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte and police had to step in to bring the brawl to an end.

Nunez was one of the key players in the brawl, and earlier this week CONMEBOL announced punishments for the players with the Liverpool star banned for five games with Marcelo Bielsa's side. Suarez is no stranger to controversy and lengthy bans, and the Uruguayan legend has offered advice to Nunez as he serves his suspension.
AFPWHAT SUAREZ SAID
Speaking to the media, Suarez said: "I already spoke with Darwin when he was sanctioned in England. Sometimes people enjoy it more when you are on the ground and fall, but people feel more pain when you get back up.
"And that is what he has to do: get up and continue to show the kind of player he is. That is where you see the great players and the mental strength he has to have to show those people that they like to see him on the ground."

WHAT NEXT FOR NUNEZ?
Suarez announced his retirement from the international game earlier this week, and Nunez will miss out on the former Barcelona star's final Uruguay match. Suarez also talked about the same as he said: “It is not an easy moment that they must be going through, these are complicated moments. I have spoken with some of them and unfortunately, they cannot be here, for something so important for me.
"I've been with all of them for many years in the national team and I would have liked them to be here on Friday, but that's football and they've sent me their messages, and they know that it's a difficult time for me to make that decision.”

Ronaldo netted 900th career goalCame in Portugal's win against CroatiaKeane claims he is still the best in the boxWHAT HAPPENED?
Ronaldo fell to the ground in celebration after scoring his 900th professional career goal in Portugal's Nations League win over Croatia. The Al-Nassr striker scored a typically Ronaldo-esque goal, lurking in the box and firing home with a first-time finish. Manchester United legend Roy Keane reacted to the moment after the game and was adamant that his old team-mate is still the best finisher in the world inside the 18-yard box.

Speaking on after the match, Keane said: "That was a bit of an issue. [Referring to his lack of impact at Euro 2024]. But (he's reached) 900 goals. If you put the ball in those areas he's still the best in the world."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Being the mentality monster that Ronaldo is, he did not take much time to reflect on his achievement before admitting he wants another 100 goals. The 39-year-old bagged 50 times in Saudi Arabia last season and will back himself to reach his target before calling time on a phenomenal career.

Despite his history-making goal against Croatia, Ronaldo was surprisingly dropped to the bench for Portugal's Nations League clash with Scotland on Sunday. The former Real Madrid forward is due to head back to Saudi Arabia at the start of the week as Al-Nassr countdown to their next Saudi Pro League game against Al-Ahli on September 13.

Accused of running fake accounts

WHAT HAPPENED?
Ligue de Football Professionnel, the body that organises and administers Ligue 1, has put out a statement denying anything to do with "obvious fake accounts" on social media that are suspiciously promoting the competition.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Having lost its two biggest stars, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, in 2023 and 2024 respectively, Ligue 1's early summer was also dominated by reported struggles to find a suitable TV deal. Eventually, a contract worth €500 million (£428m/$546m) per year was signed with DAZN and beIN Sports, but it hasn't been an easy ride for the marketability of French football.
WHAT THE LFP SAID
A statement read: "Following the gross rumours that have gained momentum in recent hours regarding posts on social networks coming from obvious fake accounts of dubious consistency, the Professional Football League wishes to categorically deny the accusations suggesting that it is at the origin of this masquerade. The LFP, alongside the clubs, its official broadcasters and its partners, remains fully focused on preparing for the start of a 2024/2025 season that all football fans are eagerly awaiting and which promises to be exciting."

Travis Head played a superb innings before Peter Siddle and Wes Agar helped all but end the Hurricanes’ chances of reaching the finals
The Report by Andrew McGlashan19-Jan-2020The Adelaide Strikers survived a return to form for David Miller to secure a ten-run victory in Launceston that moved them to second in the table and all but end the Hobart Hurricanes’ hopes of making the finals.Travis Head played a superb innings to put the Strikers on course for a hefty total but he was grateful for the experience of Peter Siddle, and four wickets from Wes Agar, as the Hurricanes tried to keep their season alive.Travis Head hits out•Getty ImagesHead crunched 79 off 40 balls – and was a chance of making a century – before Jono Wells and Matt Short ensured a strong finish to the innings with a stand of 54 in 36 balls. The Hurricanes were always behind in the chase, but Miller and Ben McDermott added 60 to just about keep them in it, before Miller struck powerfully in the closing overs to ensure the Strikers were not secure until Siddle conceded just two off the first three balls of the last over.Tricky start, costly dropThere was a little bit of life in the surface and the Hurricanes made the early running through Scott Boland, who had 2 for 2 after his first seven deliveries, removing Phil Salt and Jake Weatherald – the latter to a reflex one-handed return catch. However, Clive Rose bookended the powerplay with a brace of poor overs – conceding 21 – which meant the Strikers still had a decent tally on the board. In the eighth over, there was what would become a key moment in the game when Head swept Qais Ahmad to deep square-leg where Miller could not hold on to a low chance.Head makes it countWhen he was dropped, Head was 21 off 14, an innings he would transform into a decisive display. The next over he faced from Ahmad, he slog-swept two sixes and another followed against Nathan Ellis – which went out of the ground – as he sped to a 31-ball half-century. In the 13th over, he took Rose for two more sixes in the space of three balls and there was time for him to make a huge total, but attempting to clear the rope again he found deep midwicket. However, he had shown the flexibility that has become part of his game and a reminder that before he became a Test cricketer it was the T20 format where he first made his name. The Hurricanes did reasonably well at the death – there were only two fours and two sixes in the final 7.2 overs – but Wells, whose 40 made him the Strikers’ leading run-scorer, and Short married good running with the occasional strong shot to ensure Head’s work didn’t go to waste.Peter Siddle bowled a fantastic final over to thwart David Miller•Getty ImagesWading into early troubleIt was the size of chase where the Hurricanes needed to come strongly out of the blocks, but it didn’t happen with Matthew Wade edging to slip in the first over and Caleb Jewell skying to mid-off in the fifth. Coupled with a sluggish start from Jake Doran at No. 3 – who was 15 off 18 balls at the end of the powerplay – it meant the Hurricanes had already let the asking rate escalate into double figures.Miller’s late arrivalMiller had made 91 runs in nine innings before today, but was able to get an early foothold this time although after ten overs, the Hurricanes’ requirement was a steep 122 off 60 balls. He and McDermott threatened to turn things around, but the Hurricanes were always behind even though Rashid Khan had a rare expensive day. The last five overs started with them needing 71 and McDermott picked out long-on against Siddle just as he was finding his stride. With 38 needed off 12 balls, Miller took two sixes in four balls off Michael Neser and if he could have managed a third, to bring the final-over requirement under 20, things could have been twitchy for the Strikers. But Neser went for just three singles off the last three balls – Khan pulling off a good save at deep square on the last delivery. With 21 needed off the last, Siddle had breathing space, but showed his T20 prowess with two yorkers to start with which killed the game off.
Southampton will look to get out of a sticky patch of not winning in their last three Championship matches by overcoming Coventry City tonight, after an underwhelming away trip to Blackburn Rovers last time out.
The stalemate at Ewood Park saw Southampton fail to show their superiority near the top of the division compared to Blackburn's lowly 16th spot, managing just two shots on target all game in the frustrating 0-0 draw.
The Saints firing blanks in Lancashire could see Adam Armstrong removed from the first-team picture for the clash with the Sky Blues tonight, a potentially bold call by Russell Martin but one that could work with the experienced centre-forward struggling last time out.
Adam Armstrong's performance vs Blackburn in numbers
Facing off against one of his ex-clubs in Blackburn, Armstrong would have been licking his lips at the prospect of firing in a couple of goals to haunt his former employers to steer Southampton to a win.
In reality, the 27-year-old striker would fail to really strike fear into the Riversiders at the back with a lacklustre 77-minute display.
Managing just 29 touches of the ball up top, with Southampton shot-stopper Gavin Bazunu managing 61 in stark contrast, Armstrong never found his groove against John Eustace's men and saw the game pass him by consequently.
Missing a big chance in the contest meant Armstrong couldn't follow up his last Championship strike away to Ipswich Town with another on his travels to Ewood Park, the usually potent Saints number nine uncharacteristically wasteful instead.
Martin could well be cursing his decision to play Armstrong through the centre for this game therefore, having got more out of the 27-year-old down the wings in recent weeks with the former Blackburn man helping himself to 11 assists alongside his 20 second tier strikes in this more creative role.
Southampton striker Che Adams.
It remains to be seen whether or not Martin moves Armstrong back out wide or axes him completely, but if he does switch up who his main striker is for the game with Coventry, Che Adams might well find himself back in his manager's plans again after sitting out the Blackburn stalemate.
Che Adams as Armstrong's replacement
Before Adams potentially walks out of St. Mary's in the summer for free, the in-demand number ten will hope he can fire in more goals for his promotion-chasing side to make an immediate return to the Premier League become reality.
The ex-Birmingham City attacker would have felt hard done by to have been dropped for the trip to Blackburn, having netted in the 3-2 defeat at Ipswich alongside Armstrong before the underwhelming display from his teammates versus the Riversiders.

Southampton were sorely lacking a figure like Adams in the forgettable match at Ewood Park, with the 29-time Scotland international throwing himself about effectively with four duels won in the game at Portman Road alongside notching up two key passes.
Armstrong, on the other hand, would win just two duels against Blackburn in total on top of making zero key passes to try and tee up a Saints shirt for an elusive strike.
Stuart Armstrong
Martin will hope these recent poor performances and results to match don't hinder his side's confidence too much, with the playoffs very much coming into view soon for the Saints.
It could well be a bold call from the Southampton boss to drop his team's top goalscorer, but it could prove to be a decision that takes Coventry by surprise on the way to three points being clinched.
Martin must now unleash Southampton machine who won 100% duels vs Boro
Russell Martin will want a response from his Southampton troops this Easter Monday.
Erik ten Hag and Manchester United appear to have set their sights on a new centre-back this summer. It recently emerged that the Red Devils have joined Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund in making an approach to sign Dean Huijsen, who's currently on loan from Juventus at Roma.
Huijsen's performances this season have apparently "bewitched" multiple members of the European elite, and Juventus are willing to sell him permanently for a fee in the region of €30m (£26m).
Dean Huijsen in action for Roma.
Links with Benfica's Antonio Silva, though, date back further. At the end of last year, it was reported that United had made Silva a "top target" for the 2024 summer transfer window, alongside Jean-Clair Todibo at Nice – the club owned by Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.
Silva's contract runs until 2027 includes a giant €100m (£86m) release clause, but he's still expected to leave the Primeira Liga leaders at the end of the campaign.
Man Utd in touch over Silva
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, via Sport Witness, United have made contact with Silva's agent over a potential move in the off-season. It's unclear whether Benfica will demand that his release clause is paid in full, or show a willingness to negotiate a lower fee. Encouragingly, it's said their top priority is keeping 19-year-old midfielder Joao Neves instead.
The 13-time Premier League champions "know everything" about the defender after scouting him "many times" for both club and country, and they're now preparing to escalate their interest.
"Silly" Silva may be the best young centre-back around
A product of the Benfica youth academy, Silva has already played 79 games for the club at the age of 20. He's started 21 of their 27 league games this season, and six of their eight European matches in the Champions League and Europa League (though he missed one through suspension). He'll also hope to figure prominently for Portugal at this summer's European Championships after making his major tournament debut against South Korea at the last World Cup.

Silva is one of the best ball-playing centre-backs in the league, ranking ninth for touches (1,420), ninth for passes into the final third (104), third for progressive carrying distance (3,459 yards) and, best of all, first for pass completion (92.5%). He combines that with the second-best challenge success rate in the division (80.6%), so you can see why United are desperate to sign him.
