Marco Silva now personally wants Fulham to sign "strong" £42m midfielder

As Fulham look to turn a strong start into an excellent season, Marco Silva now reportedly wants the Cottagers to sign an in-demand Serie A midfielder before the end of the month.

Fulham transfer news

The West London club have already had some moments to remember in the current campaign, with a late win over Brentford up there with a shock comeback victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bride. Sat as high as 9th thanks to their efforts, Fulham could now look to put the January transfer window to good use and eye surprise European qualification.

Fulham eyeing move to sign Premier League "leader" who may replace Pereira

He could arrive at a bargain price…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 2, 2025

As the transfer window rolls on, a number of names have already been mentioned too. Recent reports have linked the likes of Igor Jesus and James McAtee to Craven Cottage in two moves that would only improve Silva’s frontline even further. Crucially, Jesus would also provide the former Everton manager with a long-term replacement for the ageing Raul Jimenez.

McAtee, meanwhile, would instantly replace Andreas Pereira amid concerns that the Brazilian could be heading for the exit door and to Fluminense in his home country this month. Even after the Manchester City man, however, Fulham could still welcome further additions in the middle of the park.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

According to reports in Spain, Silva now personally wants Fulham to sign Douglas Luiz this month in what is likely to be a short-term loan deal away from Juventus. The midfielder has struggled since swapping Aston Villa for the Italian giants in a reported £42m move in the summer and already needs a fresh start.

There’s plenty of interest in his signature alongside Fulham too. The likes of Manchester United and even former club Aston Villa are also reportedly eyeing January moves to open quite the race for his services.

Winning such a race would certainly lay down a marker for Fulham and perhaps create a statement only a side gunning for European football are in position to make.

"Strong" Luiz would complete Fulham midfield

If Fulham are looking to shock the rest of the Premier League by finishing inside a European place – be that the Europa League or Europa Conference League – then welcoming Luiz would certainly be wise. The Brazilian played a vital part in Aston Villa’s unexpected Champions League qualification last season to earn Juventus’ interest.

What could hand the Cottagers a welcomed boost in pursuit of Luiz’s signature is the fact that he’s under the same agency as Pereira – an agency that Fulham should know well amid recent attempts to keep hold of their midfielder.

Despite a slow start in Italy, Villa sporting director Monchi has still been full of praise for his former midfielder from afar, telling reporters as relayed by Tribal Football earlier this month: “He’s playing less than we all expected, but we’re talking about a strong player.

“There are guys who arrive and impose themselves, others who need time. Patience is needed, but Douglas’ qualities are beyond discussion. He will become important for Juve. He’s a playmaker and every ball that comes out of his feet has a meaning: last year he played 90% of the games with us. He was decisive.”

Newspapers in Paris: Man Utd are trying to hijack PSG’s Kvaratskhelia move

Manchester United have joined the transfer battle to sign Napoli forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, according to newspapers in Paris, who have been closely following PSG’s own interest.

Man Utd transfer news

Over a week into the January transfer window, United’s window has been focused on the future of Marcus Rashford. But while speculation continues over the Englishman, the Red Devils have put plans in place in terms of players they would like to sign if and when money becomes available.

Man Utd make enquiry for £33m Asian star as possible Rashford replacement

Man United and Ruben Amorim have their eyes on a Ligue 1 attacker.

ByBrett Worthington Jan 9, 2025

It was reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano earlier this week that United placed Patrick Dorgu on their transfer wishlist. The left-sided defender joins Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and PSG’s Nuno Mendes on the list of potential targets, but those two are considered more expensive than Dorgu, who is said to be valued at around £30 million.

As well as looking at Dorgu, the Premier League side have made an enquiry to sign Kang-in Lee from Paris Saint-Germain. INEOS are exploring the possibility of getting a deal over the line, as PSG are looking to get £33 million for the attacker, but they also face competition from Newcastle United.

Ruben Amorim also has his eye on strengthening his goalkeeper department, as reports have emerged that United have sent a scout to watch Mads Hermansen of Leicester City, and they could take advantage of a potential Foxes PSR breach to complete a transfer. The Red Devils are aware of his “potential availability” as the goalkeeper is Leicester’s most “likely sale” if they fail to comply with PSR.

Man Utd are trying to hijack PSG's Kvaratskhelia move

INEOS are not stopping there, as according to L’Equipe, relayed by Get Football News France, Man United are now trying to hijack PSG’s move to sign Kvaratskhelia from Napoli this month.

Kvaratskhelia, who is sponsored by Adidas, has been an impressive player for Napoli since joining the club in 2022. The forward has continued to be a shining light for the Italian side, scoring a bundle of goals and creating plenty of chances for his teammates – this season the winger has scored five and recorded three assists in 17 Serie A games. The Georgia international is still under contract until 2027, but a move could materialise this month.

PSG have been long-term admirers of the winger, and last summer they came close to bringing him to the French capital. That interest has not disappeared, as Fabrizio Romano reports that PSG are continuing to try and sign Kvaratskhelia this month, with both clubs in direct contact and PSG willing to offer Milan Skriniar plus cash to get a deal over the line.

However, they are not the only team chasing the Napoli attacker, as L’Equipe reports that United are looking to hijack PSG’s transfer move by offering Rashford in part exchange for Kvaratskhelia. This offer is likely to include money as well, but it is unclear if it is enough to convince Napoli, as the forward has a release clause worth £100 million.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has reflected on his relationship with club legend Lionel Messi and admitted they didn't always get on.

Ter Stegen has revealed that he and Messi "annoyed" each other after experiencing several "bad moments" following the German goalkeeper's arrival in 2014 until the Argentine left the club in 2021.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Ter Stegen arrived at the Camp Nou ahead of the 2014-15 season and won the treble in his debut campaign, making crucial contributions to the team's Champions League glory. While that was the last time Barcelona would taste continental success, they dominated domestically, winning four La Liga titles before Messi left the club for free in 2021. Although Ter Stegen and Messi experienced a lot of highs on the pitch, they didn't exactly enjoy a cordial relationship off of it.

WHAT MARC-ANDRE TER STEGEN SAID

In an interview with (h/t SPORT), Ter Stegen was asked about his favourite moment with Messi. "The good moments or the bad moments? [laughs] We had them all," said the Barca captain.

"Leo is a special character at this level because he is motivated by a lot of things that we don’t see, I think. We’ve had moments where things didn’t work out between us because he was annoyed with me and I was annoyed with him."

Ter Stegen was asked if he ever attained closure with Messi following his conflicts with the 2022 World Cup winner, to which the goalkeeper replied: "We never argued, as if to say we didn’t get along at all. But we had our moments, and that’s fine.

“We were in the locker room together for a long time, and it was definitely interesting to have him in the team and see how he leads. Whether it’s my style or not, it was interesting to see.

“Leo is not a loudmouth; he works a lot with presence and needs to say relatively little, really. And when he says something, everyone listens. And that’s what you really want to achieve as a captain: to be listened to and followed.”

Inter Miami hold Kevin De Bruyne's MLS discovery rights, according to , meaning they are free to negotiate with him on terms before any other league club. That does not, however, indicate that a deal has been made – or even will be.

De Bruyne is leaving Manchester City upon the expiration of his contract, although the Belgian midfielder would likely have to take a significant pay cut to move to the Florida club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Realistically, it woiuld seem difficult for Miami to bring in De Bruyne without significant financial restructuring – or the former Man City legend taking an enormous pay cut. The Herons already have three designated players, individuals the league allows clubs to break the salary cap structure to sign.

That means De Bruyne would have to sign a short-term deal that lies within the league's current regulations. According to data released by the league, Miami have $3.1 million remaining this season.

A number of MLS teams would be interested in De Bruyne, of course, and Miami already have Designated Player contracts with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

The  would need to buy-down the contract of Alba, who makes a base salary of $1.25M, to open up a DP slot, which could then be allocated to De Bruyne. To do so, they would need to use General Allocation Money, and the budget charge itself could not be less than $150,000.

Messi and Busquets are MLS' top-earners in terms of base salaries, with the Argentine earning $12M and the Spaniard at $8.5M. If De Bruyne were to join them, he would likely command a similar salary.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

De Bruyne's current salary at Man City is $26M per year. He is the highest paid player at his club, and among the best compensated athletes in Europe.

With this summer’s Club World Cup in the U.S. and both Inter Miami and Manchester City participating, De Bruyne would only be able to participate with City – though he would have to sign an extension to do so. His contract expires on June 30, midway through the tournament.

He would be ineligible to play for Inter Miami until July 24, when MLS’ secondary transfer window opens.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MIAMI?

The Herons could potentially trade away De Bruyne's discovery rights if they deem a deal unable to be made. The Man City midfielder's contract expires at the conclusion of the 2025 Premier League season.

Celtic target "would snub other offers" to seal Parkhead move – ex-scout

A Celtic target is reportedly ready to “snub other offers” in order to seal a sensational move to Parkhead in the New Year.

Celtic transfer news

Celtic secured their first trophy of the season with a victory over Rangers in the League Cup final earlier this month, and Brendan Rodgers’ men continue to impress in the league, sitting at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

While there’s little urgency for Rodgers to make drastic changes to his squad in the January transfer window, rumors suggest he may still be active in the market. Several players have been tipped as potential additions this winter, including Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.

According to a report by Football Insider, the Hoops are targeting a move for Eriksen, with the publciation claiming Rodgers wants the Dane to add some European experience to his squad.

Also among those rumoured to be Glasgow-bound is Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka. The English midfielder has found opportunities at Stamford Bridge scarce this season under Enzo Maresca, failing to make the squad for any of the Blues’ 15 Premier League games.

AC Milan are also interested in Chukwuemeka, but according to reports from Italy, Celtic are in pole position to land him, with a loan move with an option to buy touted.

Kieran Tierney wants Celtic return

Another player who could reportedly be on his way to Celtic Park in January is former Hoops defender Kieran Tierney. The Arsenal left-back has recently been linked with a return to Glasgow, with the Gunners reportedly ready to sell him in January to avoid losing him for nothing when his contract expires at the end of the season.

A number of other clubs, including Aston Villa and Newcastle, are also understood to be interested in Tierney, who would be keen to take a pay-cut to join the Hoops. According to Football Insider and ex-scout Mick Brown, however, the Scotland international is happy to turn down other teams in order to move back to Parkhead.

“I know a lot of clubs are interested in him, including in the Premier League, because there aren’t too many top-level left-backs available at the moment. But from what I hear, he’s very much in favour of a move back to Scotland and a return to Celtic and would snub other offers in favour of that move.”

kieran-tierney-celtic

Tierney, 27, rose through Celtic’s academy and was a pivotal figure in the team during Rodgers’ first successful stint, before eventually making a £25 million switch to Arsenal in 2019. Rodgers himself recently refused to rule out re-joining forces with his former star.

“We’ll always be linked with top players and especially players that are one of us. Kieran was an instrumental part of a really, really successful period when I was here,” Rodgers said in a recent interview.

“His talents then took him to another challenge but we’ll be linked with lots of names and with Kieran naturally because of his situation. But we’ll only talk about a player once he’s signed.”

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has also recently fueled the rumours about a return to the club for Tierney, saying the defender would be a “quality” addition.

Rilee Rossouw gives Derbyshire a rocket in record-breaking Somerset win

A 36-ball 93 leads hosts to 191-run victory as McKiernan goes for 82 off four overs

David Hopps09-Jul-2022″Carnage,” was how Rilee Rossouw described it and he was not exaggerating. It was a perfect night for batting at Taunton – a glinting summer’s evening, an inviting batting pitch and a Derbyshire bowling attack that ultimately found this quarter-final all too much. Somerset imposed the highest score in T20 Blast history on a night that will warm West Country hearts for many years to come. They are back in Finals Day, and just to rub it in their 191-run was the biggest victory margin too.Somerset struck 265 for 5, surpassing Birmingham’s 261 for 2, made against Nottinghamshire only three weeks ago. Eighteen sixes rained into a jubilant crowd. A hot air balloon sailing close to the ground would have been best advised not to lose altitude to take a closer look.Derbyshire have never successfully chased 200, so 266 was a bit of an ask. They capsized for 74, not a single six in response, although plenty fell short, their thoughts turning in on themselves long before they began the journey home. Their North Group campaign was worthy of respect as they drew every ounce of ability out of themselves but this could hardly have been a more horrific night.Derbyshire’s head coach, Mickey Arthur, did not mince his words. “It was embarrassing,” he said. “We are not happy with simply reaching quarter-finals and tonight we didn’t execute our skills. We were tentative, didn’t field well and didn’t nail our skills with the ball, with the exception of George Scrimshaw, who was outstanding. It was very disappointing because I felt we bottled it.”Rossouw’s 93 off 36 balls was also on course to become one of the fastest T20 hundreds in Blast history until Scrimshaw had him caught, pulling, at deep midwicket. One damning statistic then that Derbyshire managed to avoid. Scrimshaw has been impressive enough this season to win an England Lions call and his reputation will be enhanced by his return of 2 for 16 while all around him was bedlam. Mattie McKiernan’s legspin had a less rewarding night: his figures of 4-0-82-0 were the most expensive in the history of T20 cricket.McKiernan’s fate was sealed during a soul-destroying 15th over of the innings in which he conceded 36, comprising five sixes, a four and two no balls courtesy of a googly that landed off the cut strip. At least this only ranked as third in the all-time over of gloom – James Fuller once went for 38 for Gloucestershire and conceded 12 before he had bowled a legal delivery. If it is any consolation for McKiernan, Fuller, now at Hampshire, has been one of this season’s stand-out performers. It is possible to come back from this.

All of the runs off the bat in that over fell to Rossouw, who repeatedly found the ball in his arc and dealt with it forcefully – as he has all season. He now has 600 runs, the best return in Somerset’s history, and this season second only to Hampshire’s James Vince, at an outlandish strike rate of 197.36All Derbyshire’s bowlers, Scrimshaw apart, missed their lengths as they found Taunton, a land that breeds domineering young batters, beyond their comprehension. It was also a night when Tom Banton, who was regarded as one of T0’s hottest properties the other side of Covid-19, reminded everybody what all the fuss was about. He took 19 off McKiernan’s first over and, later in his innings, successive sixes against Alex Hughes even left the umpire, Neil Mallender, mopping his brow. Hughes fooled him with a slower ball as he departed for 73 from 41. But he should have fallen to Mark Watt at backward point on 29, Ben Aitchison the culprit.Somerset’s power game had been locked on for most of the night, but when Tom Lammonby took 24 from his first five balls, Aitchison the bowler to suffer, the highest team score hovered into view. Hughes’ wide half-volley, slapped straight for six in the final over, duly achieved it.This all said, How did Somerset get to 49 from five overs without losing a wicket? That they did so as good as settled the match. For Will Smeed, this was a learning night. Perhaps the most painful learning night of his career. He is one of the most exciting young power hitters in the game. But if he ever needed reminding that his prowess is narrow – he has yet to make a four-day debut – Scrimshaw provided it as he bowled the opening over for the first time in his career and exposed Smeed’s limitations.Related

Scrimshaw is tall and gangly, and is modelling a slightly villainous moustache to develop an air of menace. He bowled fast and short on a pitch with plenty of bounce for the new ball, his line awry at times but his potential clear to see. Smeed clothed his fourth ball so badly it failed to reach mid-on and jabbed at short balls without making contact. He was bruised, physically and mentally. He is often the darling of Taunton on T20 nights like this, but it told him of the challenges ahead to reach the top level.Surprisingly, Scrimshaw was not given a second over. It felt as if Derbyshire were sticking to pre-match plans for how they would negotiate the powerplay. It would have taken a captain sure of his instincts to change tack and the captain until now, Shan Masood, had been called up by Pakistan.Derbyshire’s reply malfunctioned from the outset, Somerset needing to do nothing out of the ordinary. They were 42 for 4 after the powerplay, three of them to Peter Siddle. Luis Reece was unfortunate to pick out the fielder at 45; du Plooy, struck on the funny bone, first ball, was dismissed as he charged at his second; and Hilton Cartwright mishit to deep midwicket. As the collapse gathered pace, the best catch fell to the wicketkeeper, Banton, as he ran back to catch Mark Watt first ball. All that Derbyshire’s night lacked was a comedy run out. “No, big ‘un,” McKiernan yelled to Aitchison as he attempted a second run to deep midwicket. The cry went unheard. Perhaps he thought Scrimshaw is the big ‘un these days. Disheartened looks were briefly exchanged. Derbyshire had endured a disastrous night.

Newcastle keen on signing "elegant" Eric García; deal possible in January

Newcastle United are keen on signing an “elegant” young defender, and a deal is possible this January, according to a recent report.

Newcastle targeting new centre-back

Newcastle are planning on signing a new centre-back in the January transfer window, with Eddie Howe keen to strengthen his squad heading into the second half of the Premier League season. As such, the Magpies have started to weigh up different options in defence, and their top target is believed to be Abdukodir Khusanov of Lens, who has caught the eye due to his impressive performances in Ligue 1 this term.

Paris St Germain's Ousmane Dembele in action with RC Lens' AbduqodirKhusanov

Such is Newcastle’s interest in the youngster, they are said to have come forward to orchestrate a deal, which could amount to a fee of around £25m. Should Howe miss out on Khusanov, the manager could make a move for Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez, having previously sent scouts to run the rule over the 20-year-old earlier this season.

Although Newcastle seemingly have their sights firmly set on Khusanov and Ordonez, a new target is now entering the frame, with Spanish sources reporting that Barcelona’s Eric Garcia is now of interest. The La Liga side are happy to let Garcia leave in January, and they would be looking to receive a fee of around €25m (£21m) for his services.

The Magpies are not the only Premier League side keen on the Spaniard, however, with Chelsea also interested, and there is a feeling he could adapt to life in England quickly, having played for Manchester City in the past.

Newcastle are said to be looking for a signing to help them compete at the highest level in Europe, and the 23-year-old could fit the bill, given his experience playing for some of the continent’s top clubs.

Newcastle in talks to sell "unbelievable" ace in January for 50% discount

Talks are believed to be ongoing.

1 ByHenry Jackson Dec 21, 2024 Garcia struggling for game time

The Barcelona-born defender is struggling to get consistent minutes in the team this season, often being limited to cameo appearances off the bench, but there are signs he could be a solid addition for Howe this winter. Given that the former Manchester City man already has experience in the Premier League, he could have the edge on the likes of Khusanov and Ordonez, who are both yet to test the English game and less experienced in high level football generally.

Furthermore, the Spaniard impresses on some key defensive metrics, ranking in the 86th percentile for tackles completed per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers. Garcia has also been lauded by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in the past.

£21m is a fair price to pay for a player of Garcia’s ability, so it is exciting news that Newcastle are now in the race for his signature.
