Tamim: 'After the last two months, I had nerves going out to bat'

Bangladesh’s batting crisis continued as they succumbed to a 86-run defeat against New Zealand in the second ODI in Dhaka. But the return of Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah will be encouraging, as both looked sharp although they couldn’t kick on after getting starts. Mahmudullah top-scored with 49 before hitting Cole McConchi’s long hop to short fine-leg; Tamim had earlier gloved while trying a lap-sweep against Ish Sodhi after making 44.Mahmudullah was playing his first ODI since early March, when he was part of the squad for the three-match ODI series against England. The national selectors had initially said that they were resting him but it was clear for the next six months that they were moving on from Mahmudullah. But with the World Cup looming and Bangladesh’s batting proving to be inconsistent, the selectors had to give Mahmudullah another chance ahead of the major event in India.Related

Tamim meanwhile had missed most of the Afghanistan series in July, amid his retirement U-turn. He also missed the Asia Cup through a long-standing back injury. Tamim admitted that his return to action was a nervous one, especially with the bat, but once he timed a few shots, he felt better.”I was nervous today. I will be lying if I said it was just another game,” he said. “Whatever has happened in the last couple of months, I had nerves going out to bat. But after the first over, it came down. It was nice to hit the balls again. I think it was good to be out there but there’s certainly still a lot of discomfort in my back. The physios are trying to overcome it.”Mahmudullah also took a bit of time to settle down, but he was forceful through all the wickets that fell at the other end. Tamim said that Mahmudullah reacted well to the situation when he came out to bat when they were 70 for 4.”I thought he was excellent. I was in a small partnership with him. His intent looked really good. I didn’t feel he was out for six or seven months. He looked good. He fielded well.”Tamim felt that though Bangladesh could have kept New Zealand down to 200 or 210, the pitch was good enough to chase down the 255-run target, urging the team to take a serious look at their top-order collapses. Only once in the last seven innings have Bangladesh gone past 100 runs before losing four wickets.”This run chase was gettable on this wicket. I think we could have restricted them around 210-215. But this was a good wicket. I don’t think we got out to really good deliveries.”We have to look into (losing four wickets early) very seriously going into the World Cup. We can’t win a lot of games if we lose four or five wickets quickly. We lost early wickets but there were good patches today. But to win any game, you have to stop this (collapse). We have to look to minimise back-to-back wickets. The coach and captain aren’t the only ones in charge of this, the responsibility is among all of us.”

Chelsea must sell to buy! Blues must raise £60m in player sales to register players for Champions League amid another summer spending spree

Chelsea must reportedly raise over £60 million ($82m) in player sales to register their new signings for next season's Champions League, with UEFA's financial regulations forcing the club into a balancing act. Despite a lucrative Club World Cup run, the Blues face a race against time to offload stars or risk being unable to field their summer recruits in European competitions.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea are under UEFA pressure to meet strict financial rules following a record-breaking fine last week. Despite earning close to £60 million ($82m) from their Club World Cup run, that money cannot be used to offset their Champions League registration balance. UEFA's 'List A' requirement means Chelsea must ensure income from sales covers the cost of registering any new players, as per The Times.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As it stands, Chelsea's summer signings, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr cannot play in UEFA competitions unless Chelsea’s incoming fees outweigh their outgoing costs. With players like Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana also yet to be registered on List A, Chelsea’s balance sheet is rapidly filling up. The club is now relying on permanent outgoings to reach the necessary margin for eligibility.

  • TELL ME MORE…

UEFA rules calculate each player's registration cost based on their salary and amortised transfer fee, capped at a five-year contract length. For example, Delap's £30 million transfer will count as £6 million annually for the next five years for registration purposes. Chelsea’s transfer activity so far suggests they are well above the threshold, making major sales a requirement rather than an option.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

The Blues must act quickly in the market, with names like Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling and Christopher Nkunku all potentially available to balance the books. The club will also entertain offers for Noni Madueke, who has received solid interest from Arsenal. With UEFA's September 2 registration deadline looming, sales, not signings, are now Chelsea's top priority.

IOC will decide if Afghanistan play in the Olympics – ICC CEO Allardice

Afghanistan’s participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is in the hands of the International Olympics Council (IOC), not the ICC. This is the view expressed by ICC’s chief executive officer Geoff Allardice, who was responding to how cricket’s governing body will tackle the challenge of Afghanistan women players being forced into exile since Taliban assumed power in 2021.In October the IOC approved the LA28’s recommendation of adding T20 cricket as a new sport, convinced by its popularity across the Commonwealth countries as well as the younger generation, along with the potential it brings for growth in markets such as the USA.In its proposal, the ICC had recommended a six-team event for both the men’s and women’s competitions which was approved by the IOC. By 2025, the LA28 and ICC will work out a competition structure as well as the way in which teams can qualify for the event. The LA28 organisers have stressed on gender equality at the Olympics, which normally sees participation from both genders in individual and team sports. However, Afghanistan currently do not have a women’s cricket team, with 22 out of the 25 contracted players moving overseas since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. There remains a chance, however, that the men’s team might take part in the event in five years’ time.”(In) the Olympic competition teams are fielded by the National Olympic Committees of those countries,” Allardice told the ‘s Stumped podcast. “As an international sporting federation, we position our sport with the LA28 organisers for inclusion. And the IOC and they (LA28) have included cricket. In terms of the position of the National Olympic Committee of Afghanistan, it’s probably something for the IOC to be able to address more accurately than me. But I know that they (IOC) have been following the progress or the developments there. Our position on cricket and supporting our member in Afghanistan is not dissimilar to those of other international sporting organisations.”Related

In its communication with the Taliban government, the IOC has been emphasising that the country’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) will be in danger of suspension if access to sports for women continues to be restricted. The IOC has not cleared Afghanistan’s participation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.Addressing the IOC session in Mumbai in October, James Macleod, IOC head of Olympic Solidarity and National Olympic Committee Relations, said that there was a “tiny bit of progress” made which was evident in the Hangzhou Asian Games recently. Out of the 83 Afghan athletes, 17 were women. While it was the men who owned all five medals, the women athletes – all of whom reside overseas – competed in volleyball, athletics and cycling. They also had male and female flag bearers at the event.IOC president Thomas Bach had pointed out at the Mumbai session that the onus was on Afghanistan’s National Olympic Committee to show the progress it was making to ensure women cricketers were receiving encouragement and support to compete at all levels. “In this broader context, cricket will be considered in the end,” he saidAfghanistan men were part of the gold medal match in the Asian Games in the absence of the women’s team. Allardice, who traveled to Hangzhou, said that the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had committed to developing women’s cricket when it was granted ICC’s Full Membership in 2017.”They were in the process of doing that through to 2021,” Allardice said. “And in 2021 the regime in the country changed and has brought in rules, laws that prohibit women from playing sport in the country. Whilst we have spoken with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and their position is that they have to operate within the laws of the country and the rules set by the government.”An ICC working group, led by its deputy chair Imran Khwaja, has been liaising with the Taliban government in the last year with the ultimate aim of helping women play cricket safely. “The question for the ICC board is do we support our member in their ability to promote cricket within the rules set by the government of the country? And view is yes,” Allardice said.As a Full Member, the ACB receives significant funding. As per the ICC’s financial distribution model for the next cycle (2024-27), the ACB will receive approximately USD 16.8 million as its share from the commercial earnings. Allardice said that the member boards had the autonomy to utilise the funds as they saw fit.”How those members distribute those funds and the use of that money is very much up to those members. With any of our members, we have a check and balance over how that money is distributed and whether it goes to certain contracts or other contracts. We don’t stipulate how that needs to be managed.”

Danushka Gunathilaka will be allowed to return to domestic and international cricket after being found not guilty of sexual assault.Although Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had supported Gunathilaka through his legal proceedings in Australia, going as far as to pay his legal fees – which the board said Gunathilaka is obligated to pay back – the board had suspended him from all forms of cricket in November 2022, while the legal process was ongoing. But an “independent inquiry committee” appointed by SLC has now recommended an “immediate lifting of [Gunathilaka’s] cricketing ban, allowing him to resume regular activities and return to national duty”. Gunathilaka, 32, has himself expressed a strong desire to return to training and cricket since being found not guilty in a Sydney court on September 23.Related

He has also stated he would pursue compensation from the Australian government. Gunathilaka was required to remain in Australia during the course of the legal process, and had various other restrictions imposed upon him, such as a ban on his use of dating apps and social media, though these were relaxed over time. However, Gunathilaka did enjoy the public support of some public figures through this time, including present and former cricketers, and a government minister. This had been the latest of the suspensions imposed on Gunathilaka by SLC. He had previously been suspended on three separate occasions for disciplinary breaches, the last of which had come in June 2021, when he – along side Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella – had breached the Sri Lanka team’s bio-secure bubble in England.

+ Confira e simule a tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro

Salah expressed his feelings of sadness and confusion in a post on Instagram after former teammate and friend Jota tragically passed away in a car accident in the early hours of Thursday morning, aged just 28. The Egyptian also sent out his words of support to Jota's wife, whom he married under two weeks ago, their three children and his and brother Andre Silva's parents, in addition to all those close to the two brothers.

Tributes have been pouring in from across the footballing world and beyond since the news broke on Thursday. What makes Salah's words so poignant is that, despite giving himself over 24 hours to process what had happened before sending out the message, he still felt he could not find the right words to say. That was powerful in itself, and will reflect the heart-breaking reality faced by those close to Diogo and Andre as they come to terms with the news.

WHAT SALAH SAID

Salah said: "I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back. My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten."

Netherlands eye upset over India to keep Champions Trophy hopes alive

“Funnier things have happened” – Teja Nidamanuru optimistic after defeat to England sends the Netherlands bottom

Matt Roller08-Nov-20232:24

Nidamanuru: ‘We haven’t put together an ideal game yet’

The Netherlands’ slim semi-final hopes were mathematically brought to an end with their 160-run loss to England in Pune on Wednesday. The margin of defeat left them bottom of the points table heading into the final round of fixtures and their ambitions of qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy with a top-eight finish will likely rest on them beating India on Sunday. It would be a monumental result. India have won eight games out of eight, sweeping their opponents aside to secure top spot in the group and a semi-final berth against the team that finishes fourth; the Netherlands are the only Associate nation at the World Cup and appear to be running out of steam after consecutive defeats. But the Dutch will head to Bengaluru believing they can turn over the tournament favourites. “It’s a game of cricket, right?” Teja Nidamanuru said on Wednesday night. “Obviously, you need a bit of luck. There’s no doubt that they’re a very strong team and they’ve been playing very good cricket, but funnier things have happened in the game.”To play arguably the best team in the comp, at the top of the table, is something that we’re very excited by and it’s another opportunity for us. Every time we step on the park, we’re trying to showcase our skills and do the best that we can, especially being at the World Cup and coming through the journey that we’ve done.”The Netherlands have never previously played a full international fixture at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and are expecting a loud crowd. “Obviously it’s got an amazing atmosphere there,” Scott Edwards, their captain, said. “The boys are looking forward to it. We’ll talk about this game and what we could have done better, then we’ll start preparing for that.”Edwards’ analysis of Wednesday’s defeat was simple: “We didn’t start well with the ball. We let them get away from us. I thought the bowlers did really well to drag it back and again, they just got away from us at the end there to set probably just above par. And then, same old story with the bat.”The Netherlands were also left to rue a missed chance off Ben Stokes, who was dropped on 41 off the 52nd ball he faced when Aryan Dutt put down a tough catch at fine leg off Logan van Beek. Stokes soon shifted gears, eventually falling in the 50th over for 108 off 84 balls.”When it comes to big players and taking those half-chances, we definitely pride ourselves on doing that as a fielding unit,” Nidamanuru said. “We practise those as well – a lot. It is a little bit disappointing, but I don’t think you can put [the result] down to that one opportunity. It also comes back to being able to execute our bowling plans and being disciplined as well.”Nidamanuru, who finished unbeaten on 41 off 34 balls, said: “We haven’t put together the ideal game yet, if I’m really honest… we are a growing and a learning group of cricketers as a whole team, and we pride ourselves on that. I have no doubt that we’ll get back to the drawing board, discuss this game and take that forwards.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

All three are, arguably, success stories of United's academy, but in different ways. Greenwood is impressing at French giants Marseille after leaving Old Trafford last year, Garner – who was in the forward's age group at the Red Devils – is proving his worth at Everton after struggling to make the grade at United, and Mainoo is already an England international at 19. For all of United's troubles, their academy can still produce top talent.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

This is not the first time Greenwood has been in training with a former United team-mate, as last week the 23-year-old was seen with Macclesfield ace D’Mani Mellor. The two United graduates have been working on the new 3G pitch that has been installed at Chadderton FC – a North West Counties Football League Premier Division side that are based in Oldham.
