Rain in Guwahati denied hosts Rajasthan Royals a shot at a top-two finish in the final league fixture of IPL 2024. The game was abandoned, without a ball being bowled, at around 10.50pm local time, meaning RR ended the league phase with four losses in a row, followed by this washout, to finish third with 17 points.Sunrisers Hyderabad also had 17 points, having successfully chased down 215 against a severely depleted Punjab Kings side earlier in the day, but they stayed second, thanks to a superior net run-rate. Pat Cummins’ SRH will now face table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders in the first qualifier in Ahmedabad on May 21. As for Royals, they will run into a red-hot Royal Challengers Bangalore side, which is on a six-match winning streak, in the Eliminator the next day at the same venue.KKR’s players might have to rock up cold in the playoffs, with their last two league games having been abandoned without a ball being bowled. Especially Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Phil Salt’s potential replacement, who is yet to play his first game this IPL. His last outing with the bat was for Afghanistan in mid-March.

Royals have similar concerns around their overseas players. Their finisher Shimron Hetmyer was originally deemed fit for Monday’s fixture, but eventually didn’t make it to the XI or the Impact subs bench, with RR captain Sanju Samson suggesting that they had to make some last-minute changes to their team.Hetmyer hasn’t played since failing to finish a tense chase against SRH along with Rovman Powell on May 2. Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who is somewhat of a like-for-like replacement for Jos Buttler, had a fairly rough initiation into the IPL, managing 18 off 23 balls against Punjab Kings in much drier conditions in Guwahati on May 15.The Guwahati surface was under covers for the most of Monday evening before the rain briefly relented to allow the toss for a seven-over shootout, which was scheduled to restart at 10.45pm local time. However, soon after KKR won the toss and chose to bowl, the rain returned to force a damp end to the league phase.

He has also represented Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings in the IPL.”Somerset are one of the biggest names in the English domestic game and I’m excited to be able to play a part in their journey this year,” he added.Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “We are extremely pleased to have been able to sign a cricketer of Riley’s ability and experience. He bowls with real pace and skill and will add further experience and a different dimension to our bowling attack.”He is driven to achieve further international and high-profile global franchise recognition, and we look forward to him playing a key role for us this summer.”

Cummins after loss to KKR: 'Old mate Starcy turned it on again'

SRH captain said he loved how “brave the guys were in a high-pressure situation” like IPL and that there was a “lot of fun”

Moody: SRH’s batters have failed to adapt to conditions that are not batting friendly

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were “totally outplayed” by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final of IPL 2024, Pat Cummins has conceded.Their eight-wicket defeat, completed with 57 balls to spare, was set up by Mitchell Starc’s blistering new-ball spell, in which he swung the ball around corners and took out the big-hitting Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi.”I thought they bowled fantastically,” Cummins said at the post-match presentation. “Unfortunately, [my] old mate Starcy turned it on again. Obviously, not enough tonight, [we were] totally outplayed.”Related

KKR's bowlers rip through SRH to win third IPL title

SRH didn’t recover from the damage caused by Starc and the other KKR quicks, and were eventually bundled for 113. The longest partnership SRH managed was for the ninth wicket, and it lasted just 22 balls, which meant they could neither hit their way out of trouble nor take the innings deep and explode at the end.”It was a bit of a tricky wicket,” Cummins, who had won the toss and opted to bat, said. “I think if we got 160, it would have been like we were in the game. [It] didn’t feel like a 200-plus wicket, again [we fell] well short. But maybe, [if] we found a few extra runs [it] might’ve given us a chance.”You hope you get a few boundaries away [early on], you’re into the game. But they bowled fantastically well, didn’t give us anything [to work with]. Similar [to Qualifier 1] last week in Ahmedabad. They bowled really well, so, full credit [to them].”Despite the failure in the final, SRH’s batting line-up pushed the boundaries of aggression during the course of the tournament. Their openers, Abhishek and Travis Head, were key to this IPL being a high-scoring season. SRH broke multiple records and did it repeatedly to set the benchmark regardless of the risk involved, which pleased Cummins.”The style that the guys played,” Cummins said, “particularly with the bat, takes a lot of skill to not only get 250, [but] also [to do it] three times. You put yourself out there a fair bit. So I loved how brave the guys were in a high-pressure situation like the IPL. They took the game on, there was a lot of fun. [The] fans seemed to like it, back in Hyderabad. So, great season.”

Rain threat looms over RCB-CSK clash in Bengaluru

The match between RCB and CSK in Bengaluru on Saturday will decide the final playoff spot

The weather in Bengaluru could impact the crucial IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday night. It’s a game that will likely decide the final qualifier for the playoffs, but it’s not impossible that the game could be affected by rain. The Indian Meteorological Department has said “heavy rain/thundershowers associated with gusty winds (40-50kph) are very likely” in some parts of Bengaluru on May 18.Related

IPL 2024 scenarios – RCB vs CSK for final playoff spot

The city has received consistent rainfall over the last couple of weeks after a spell of uncharacteristically hot weather. While it was relatively dry on May 15 and 16, central Bengaluru, where the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is located, had overnight rain that continued into the morning on Friday. It was cloudy all morning on the eve of the match and the forecast had rain and thunderstorms in the evening. But, as it turned out, the promised rain did not arrive with the clouds giving way to relatively clear skies in the evening. Both the teams had long nets sessions without any disruptions. The forecast for Saturday does not look promising either with accuweather.com saying there could be thunderstorms in parts of Bengaluru, accompanied by showers, in the evening. The temperature around 7.30pm, the match start time, is expected to be around 23°C with a 100% cloud cover. It should be noted that the Chinnaswamy Stadium has an excellent drainage system. It is one of the few grounds in India with a subsurface aeration system, which allows play to begin 30 minutes after rain stops.A washout will end RCB’s chances of making the playoffs. Having lost seven of their first eight games, they have won five matches in a row to remain in contention. They currently have 12 points and a net run-rate of 0.387, while CSK are on 14 with an NRR of 0.538. To go past CSK’s NRR and make it to the playoffs, assuming a score of 200, RCB need to beat CSK by 18 runs or chase down the target with about 11 balls to spare. A truncated game will make that task tougher. For CSK, the equation is simple: a win, a washout, or even a narrow defeat is enough for them to join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final four.”The weather and these kind of things we don’t have control over,” Dwayne Bravo, the CSK bowling coach, said on the eve of the game. “We don’t try to bring up things that we don’t have control over. It’s another game for us to push for a playoffs spot and we’re really looking ahead to the challenge against a very good team tomorrow.”

ESPNcricinfo staff22-May-2024The head coach of the Victoria women’s team, Dulip Samaraweera, has resigned after just two weeks in the role after being denied an appointment he wanted to make to his staff due to the state’s policies.Samaraweera, who played seven Tests and five ODIs for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1994, had been appointed on a two-year deal earlier in May after being the interim head coach since Jarrad Loughman left the role last November.”During the recruitment process Dulip had expressed a desire to make a specific coaching appointment in his support team,” Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins said.”That appointment was unable to be facilitated due to internal policies we have in place. Bell-Drummond guides Kent to rare victory at Lancashire

Kent 261 (Evison 71*) and 166 for 3 (Bell-Drummond 79*, Compton 29) beat Lancashire 92 (Gilchrist 6-24, Agar 4-36) and 332 (Bell 65, Hurst 58, Agar 3-65) by seven wicketsDaniel Bell-Drummond made an unbeaten 79 to steer his side to a deserved seven-wicket victory over Lancashire in the Vitality County Championship match at Emirates Old Trafford. The Kent skipper has now passed fifty in four of his eight innings this season but he and the other Kent batters had to withstand a trial by spin before reaching their target of 164 and completing their county’s first win on the ground since 1997.Both Nathan Lyon and Tom Hartley induced a number of false shots in the first hour of play and umpires Paul Pollard and Graham Lloyd turned down a number of vociferous appeals as Lancashire sought to win a first-class match after following on for the first time since 1888.However, it was noticeable that Kent’s top order managed to keep the scoreboard moving even when batting was difficult and Lancashire bowled no maidens on the final day. Both the wickets to fall were taken by Lyon, who caught and bowled Ben Compton for 29, thus ending his 86-run stand with Bell-Drummond, before having Jack Leaning caught at slip by Luke Wells for 16. But those wickets never threatened to prompt a collapse and the game ended in a flurry of boundaries as the visitors completed their first win of the season eight minutes before the scheduled lunch interval.Joe Denly struck the winning four to finish on 19 not out. Lyon took 2 for 48 from 22 overs while Hartley bowled 13 wicketless overs for 42 runs.It is Kent’s first Championship victory over Lancashire since 2013 and it moves them up to sixth in the First Division table. Lancashire are still without a win this season and remain bottom of the pile.
