A better signing than Rodrygo: Arsenal plot huge move for £77m "superstar"

After three near misses at the Premier League title, it’s a surprise to no one to see Arsenal conducting business in the transfer market to make the jump to being champions.

The Gunners are currently enduring a 20-year drought without a league triumph, a period that is simply too long given the stature and size of the football club.

Mikel Arteta is the latest manager tasked with ending the drought, but the Spaniard may need to make early inroads throughout 2025/26, or he could find himself in danger of losing his job.

If he is to avoid such a situation from occuring and subsequently end the extended period without a title, he will need backing from the hierarchy to aid his quest.

No signings have yet been completed at the Emirates this summer, but numerous deals appear to be heading in the right direction if recent reports are to be believed.

The latest on Arsenal’s hunt for new additions

Arsenal appear to be edging closer to completing a deal to land Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi after Fabrizio Romano confirmed a deal has been agreed with the player himself already meeting Arteta.

However, there could be a delay in a move for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, with the club and player potentially unable to come to an agreement on wages, whilst a fee is also yet to be sorted for the Slovenian international.

Despite the moves elsewhere, work is still being done to land other first-team targets, with AC Milan star Rafael Leao still on their radar, according to Italian outlet CalcioMercato.

They claim that the Gunners are still huge admirers of the Portuguese international winger, who has impressed massively in 2024/25 after registering 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions.

However, whilst the Serie A outfit are reluctant to sell the 26-year-old this summer, they may consider an offer in the region of €90m (£77m) with Chelsea also said to be interested.

Why Arsenal’s £77m target would be a better signing than Rodrygo

Real Madrid star Rodrygo has been another player who’s been firmly in Arsenal’s sights over recent months, especially after it was confirmed he could leave the Spanish giants this summer.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

The Brazilian international, who registered 24 goal contributions this season, could be set to leave the Bernabeu this window to find a new adventure after starting just 22 league matches.

Given his talents, it’s no surprise that he’s set to be a sought-after talent this window, with numerous sides across the globe also touted with a move for his signature.

However, the 24-year-old won’t come cheap, with Xabi Alonso’s side demanding a fee in the region of £100m to part ways with the youngster throughout the off-season.

Such a fee could prove to be too much for Arteta’s side, with Leao potentially offering the Gunners a cheaper alternative in their hunt for Premier League glory.

AC Milan's RafaelLeaobefore the match

Despite the lower transfer value, the Milan star has managed to outperform Rodrygo in numerous key areas, further highlighting why he’d be a better addition ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Leao, who’s been labelled a “superstar” by writer Theo Mwangi, has registered more combined goals and assists than the Brazilian, along with a higher shot on target rate – demonstrating his impressive ability in front of goal.

His superb levels of performance don’t end there, completing more take-ons and carries into the opposition box per 90, highlighting the threat he poses with the ball at his feet.

Whilst £77m may appear to be a hefty investment, it’s one that could immediately solve a problem position off the left-hand side of Arteta’s attack in North London.

Rodrygo may be the supporters’ first choice this summer, but it’s evident that the Portuguese star is a better and cheaper alternative, having the tools to help lead the club towards title glory next campaign.

VIRA-VIRA ANTES DO INTERVALO!
Endrick passou a levar a

Menino ainda fez gestual característico do adversário.

A cavadinha, sutil, fez a torcida do Flamengo explodir no Mané: placar novamente igual!

Man City confirm new signing will take iconic No. 10 shirt following Jack Grealish's departure for Everton

Manchester City have wasted no time in filling the famous No.10 shirt, handing it to French prodigy Rayan Cherki in the wake of Jack Grealish’s departure to Everton. The 21-year-old arrived from Lyon just before the FIFA Club World Cup in a deal worth €36 million (£30.5m), with further add-ons potentially inflating the fee.

Cherki’s move is being billed as a long-term masterstroke, with City seeing him as a creative spark to help bridge the gap left by the exits of club icon Kevin De Bruyne and now Grealish. Known for his silky close control and ability to glide past defenders, the youngster has been on City’s radar since emerging as a standout talent in Ligue 1.

Last season, Cherki notched the joint-highest number of assists (11) in the French top flight and was one of only two non-Paris Saint-Germain players to earn a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season. Soon, after his unveiling, he hinted at his preferred playing position, which aligns with his jersey number, "I prefer to play No.10, but right now I just want to play. Where I am on the pitch is not important; I just want to be on the pitch and help the team to win. I am ready.”

DID YOU KNOW?

While Cherki’s arrival marks a new chapter, Grealish’s loan move to Everton marks the end of a turbulent period at City. The England international, signed for a British-record fee in 2021, has struggled for consistency under Guardiola and saw his minutes dwindle last season.

Now heading to Merseyside on a season-long loan, Grealish will work under David Moyes in what could be a career-defining stint. Everton have secured an option to make the deal permanent next summer for around £50 million ($67m), a figure that could tempt City to cut ties for good if the 29-year-old flourishes.

Arsenal player ratings vs Man Utd: Riccardo Calafiori header gives Premier League's set-piece kings unconvincing win at Old Trafford as anonymous Viktor Gyokeres endures debut to forget

The Gunners' Italian maestro got the clincher but their £64 million summer signing struggled as they edged the Red Devils on their own patch

Arsenal won only their third game at Old Trafford since 2006 with a battling 1-0 victory in their Premier League opener on Sunday.

After a blood and thunder start, the visitors took the lead in the 13th minute when Altay Bayindir flapped at a Declan Rice corner, under pressure from William Saliba, and Riccardo Calafiori headed in from a foot out. Despite having the lead, Arsenal looked vulnerable on the counter, particularly when their full-backs bombed forward, and had it not been for the post, Patrick Dorgu's 20-yard rocket would have made it 1-1.

Martin Odegaard stung the hands of Bayindir, who was preferred to Andre Onana in goal, when he jinked his way through some would-be defenders as the Gunners captain looked to banish the memories of an underwhelming 2024-25 season. Arsenal, who didn't assert the control they would have liked in the first half, were indebted to goalkeeper David Raya shortly before the break as his fingertip reaction save denied the lively Matheus Cunha from a tight angle.

Arsenal continued to be on the back foot after the interval but for all of United's huff and puff, Raya wasn't tested enough – although he had to be alert to keep out Mbeumo's goalbound header. The Gunners finally mustered a shot on goal when Rice's free-kick hit the side-netting but most of the action was happening at the other end.

It was telling that the man of the match was Raya as Mikel Arteta's men, who have now 31 goals from corners since the start of the 2023-24 season, secured all three points in an unconvincing fashion.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David Raya (8/10):

Pulled off some vital stops to keep an energetic United at bay and showed Bayindir how to control your area.

    Ben White (6/10):

Was neat and tidy going forward but his attacking runs forward meant that Arsenal were exposed in defence.

    William Saliba (7/10):

Seemed a bit unsettled early on but played a big part in Arsenal's goal with his physicality. He and Gabriel settled down in the second period and chipped in with some crucial stops late on.

    Gabriel Magalhaes (7/10):

Got into a couple of good physical tussles with Mbeumo and made some important tackles in his final third.

    Riccardo Calafiori (7/10):

Gave Arsenal the lead with an easy header but he found life rather difficult against the tricky Mbeumo. Popped up with some timely interceptions, though.

    Martin Zubimendi (5/10):

The former Real Sociedad man was brought in to give Arsenal's midfield extra quality and control but he showed little of that on his Premier League debut.

    Declan Rice (6/10):

His devilishly difficult corner led to Arsenal's opener but instead of making driving runs into United's half, the midfielder was often hanging onto United's coattails.

    Martin Odegaard (6/10):

Showed signs of the Odegaard of the 2023-24 campaign but the consistency was lacking a tad.

    Attack

    Gabriel Martinelli (6/10):

Put in some hard yards for his team but other than a couple of neat passes, the Brazilian didn't threaten United's backline a great deal.

    Viktor Gyokeres (4/10):

The summer signing showed glimpses of his power and pace but the former Sporting CP striker had an underwhelming outing. He didn't hold the ball up particularly well, lost the vast majority of his duels, and created no chances.

    Bukayo Saka (5/10):

Didn't seem like he was in the game for long periods and was outshone by Dorgu and Luke Shaw.

    Subs & Manager

    Kai Havertz (X/10):

Didn't offer a great deal but held the ball up more than Gyokeres.

    Noni Madueke (5/10):

The Chelsea recruit did come on in the second half but that may have been his most telling act.

    Jurrien Timber (7/10):

Fought tooth and nail for the ball and got his team out of some sticky situations.

    Myles Lewis-Skelly (6/10):

Didn't get much time to make an impact.

    Mikel Merino (7/10):

Did the right things at the right time and played in the right areas.

    Mikel Arteta (7/10):

Despite being in front at half time, the Spaniard may have been the more disappointed of the two managers, given his side's lukewarm performance. While his team got all three points, they offered precious little going forward. However, winning ugly is a skill in itself.

Barcelona player ratings vs Levante: Barca win it at the death – Hansi Flick's side come from 2-0 down to beat Levante as own goal from Lamine Yamal cross completes comeback

The reigning champions bounced back from a poor first-half display to make it two wins from two in La Liga

Second-half goals from Pedri and Ferran Torres helped Barcelona fight back from two goals down to win 3-2 against Levante in La Liga on Saturday.

The reigning champions found themselves deservedly behind thanks to a strike from Ivan Romero and a penalty from Jose Luis Morales, with the hosts unlucky not to score more.

However Barca were quick out of the blocks in the second half, with a wonderful long-range strike from Pedri and a close-range finish from Ferran Torres levelling the score.

And in the dying embers of the game, Levante defender Unai Elgezabal headed into his own net following a teasing Lamine Yamal cross as Barca completed a dramatic comeback.

Joan Garcia (6/10):

The goalkeeper could do nothing to stop either goal going in. He did make a couple of good saves, though, to prevent Levante from scoring more.

Eric Garcia (4/10):

He and his fellow defenders started well, catching Levante offside a few times, but their solidity quickly crumbled thereafter.

Ronald Araujo (4/10):

Like Garcia, Araujo and the Barca offside trap was in fine form early on, but Levante soon got the better of it and were very unlucky not to score more than two.

Pau Cubarsi (4/10):

The centre-back, with his arms behind his back, was not aggressive enough as Romero dribbled past him to fire the hosts in front after 15 minutes.

Alejandro Balde (4/10):

A difficult evening for the left-back. Not long after receiving a yellow card, the 21-year-old conceded the penalty for Levante's second after the ball struck his wrist inside the box.

Pedri (8/10):

Barca's best player by far. He was unlucky not to record an assist, when Ferran Torres hit the crossbar from his delightful through ball, before his long-range stunner kick-started the comeback.

Returning to Barca's midfield, he was easily dribbled past in the build up to Levante's opener before being replaced at half time.

Lamine Yamal (7/10):

He looked a threat every time he was able to cut inside onto his left foot, with his late cross leading to Barca's last-gasp winner.

Raphinha (7/10):

The Brazil international headed wide from a great first-half chance. He grew into the game, though, curling in a great corner which led to Barca's equaliser.

Marcus Rashford (4/10):

The forward looked sharp early on, as he and Balde combined well down the left-hand side, but his influence soon waned. He was substituted during the half-time break.

Ferran Torres (7/10):

The former Manchester City man should have scored in the first half but hit the crossbar. However he made amends after the break, latching onto Raphinha's corner for the equaliser.

Jules Kounde (6/10):

He had the chance to win it for Barca before Elgezabal's own goal, but he fired his shot just wide of the far post.

Andreas Christensen (6/10):

The defender was introduced late in the second half as Barca went in search of a winner. He looked assured, thus giving manager Hansi Flick plenty to think about moving forward.

Gavi (6/10):

He came off the bench for the second half and provided Barca with more impetus going forward. A solid display from the 21-year-old.

Dani Olmo (6/10):

Like Gavi he injected some much-needed energy into Barca's play in the second half. A good substitution by Flick and a good outing from Olmo.

Robert Lewandowski (5/10):

The striker received little service following his introduction off the bench. He was convinced he should have earned his side a second-half penalty, but his appeals were waved away.

Hansi Flick (5/10):

Perhaps the decision to start Casado was the wrong one in the end. However the German got his half-time team talk spot on as Barca scored two quick-fire goals after the break.
