Virgil Van Dijk nearly punched the player Liverpool are considering instead of Guehi

After missing out on Marc Guehi at the 11th hour, Liverpool have now reportedly set their sights on signing another Premier League rival when 2026 arrives.

How Liverpool missed out on Guehi

The medical was complete, the fee was agreed and a goodbye video had even been put together by Crystal Palace. All that was really left to do was for Guehi to sign on the dotted line and for Liverpool to announce his arrival. That was until chaos at Selhurst Park erupted, however.

In a mini-civil war at the club, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner reportedly threatened to quit if chairman Steve Parish sold Guehi to Liverpool on deadline day. It was either the £35m fee or his manager, Parish had to choose. And when Igor Julio ditched a move to Crystal Palace for West Ham United, there was only one option for the Eagles.

It’s the one deal that Liverpool failed to get over the line and they may regret not doing so. Recent reports have emerged which claim that Real Madrid are now interested in signing Guehi when his contract expires next summer and, as Liverpool know all too well, the Spanish club rarely miss out on their targets.

Whilst that move could end up benefitting them if Ibrahima Konate signs a new deal and stays put as a result, Arne Slot could still do with another central defender in 2026.

If it’s not Guehi, then Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes must get back to the drawing board before doing what they do better than most when the opportunity arrives.

Liverpool eyeing Van Hecke swoop

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool are now eyeing a move to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2026, having already sent scouts to watch the defender in action. Joined by Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in an early race for his signature, Liverpool could yet push on to land an impressive Guehi alternative.

In possession, Van Hecke should be Liverpool’s man. His progression numbers last season were excellent, especially compared to Guehi, who got the better of the Brighton man when it came to ball recoveries and tackles.

Whether the Reds believe that Van Hecke can eventually match Guehi’s dominance off the ball is the big question, but he certainly puts himself about, nearly causing a full blown fight between himself and Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk this time last year.

Praised as a “great character” by Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, the 25-year-old has shown he’s not afraid of anyone in the Premier League and a big move now awaits. With just two years remaining on his current deal at The Amex, Liverpool could even land a bargain deal to sign Van Hecke if they are willing to wait until next summer.

Bangladesh hire James Pamment as new fielding coach

James Pamment has been appointed as the new fielding coach of the Bangladesh men’s national team. He will join the Test squad ahead of the two-match series against Zimbabwe at home later this month. Pamment has been given a long-term contract that ends after the ODI World Cup in 2027.”I am really excited about the opportunity to get involved with a very talented Bangladesh side,” he said in a statement. “I am eagerly looking forward to joining the players and the backroom staff ahead of the Zimbabwe series.”Pamment effectively replaced assistant coach Nic Pothas, who oversaw the side’s fielding improvement in the past few months before leaving the job in January this year. Bangladesh have had a number of fielding coaches in the recent past – Ryan Cook and Shane McDermott also worked with the team in the last few years.Pamment comes with an impressive resume as a fielding coach. He was the assistant coach at Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL since 2018, and specialised in fielding and running between the wickets for the franchise.Prior to the IPL role, Pamment’s international experience was with New Zealand, where he was the fielding coach and specialist technical advisor. He also worked in NZC as a high-performance coach.Pamment, 56, was born in Yorkshire but is a New Zealand national who played all his first-class cricket for Auckland.

Tottenham could be regretting Mathys Tel deal as "frustrating" claim made

In one of his final acts as chairman, Daniel Levy signed Mathys Tel in a cut-price £30 million deal for Tottenham, but it’s been far from plain sailing for the Frenchman thus far.

Initially, Spurs agreed a £45 million buy-option in the January loan deal which saw him join from Bayern Munich. However, Levy managed to re-negotiate a lesser fee to make Tel the Lilywhites’ first signing of the summer bar Kevin Danso.

The arrival of Bayern’s former prodigy brought plenty of excitement with it, especially after Julian Nagelsmann once tipped the 20-year-old to bag 40 goals a season one day.

Whilst Tel garnered a fearsome reputation as a hot commodity during his time in Bavaria, it’s been a mixed start to life in north London.

He grabbed back-to-back Premier League goals against Southampton and Wolves in April last season, and an assist against both West Ham and Brighton, but is yet to get off the mark since Thomas Frank took charge.

Tel also missed a penalty in the UEFA Super Cup shoot-out against PSG, with Frank ultimately sacrificing the forward for Europe by omitting him from Spurs’ 22-man Champions League squad alongside the likes of Yves Bissouma, Kota Takai, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

He therefore won’t be eligible to make a single Champions League appearance until after the league phase, if they even get that far, with pundit John Wenham suggesting that the north Londoners may be regretting the type of deal they’ve secured for Tel.

Tottenham could be regretting Mathys Tel deal as "frustrating" claim made

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham hints that Tottenham will be looking back on the permanent deal for Tel with hindsight, asking themselves whether they should’ve just gone for another loan.

Of course, there is still time for him to come good, and that is far more likely than not.

Why Mathys Tel could prove people wrong at Tottenham

Tel is still raw, but Frank has been very impressed by the attacker since his Champions League snub, not least for a hard-working display against West Ham.

The France Under-21 starlet’s main strengths lie in his athleticism and versatility. Comfortable through the middle or out wide, he gives Frank multiple options in attack. His pace allows him to stretch defences, while his ability to play with his back to goal offers a different profile to Spurs’ other forwards. That adaptability will be key in a side competing across several competitions this season.

His finishing, movement and composure are still maturing, but those are qualities that can sharpen with experience.

LSG, GT gear up for a top-heavy battle in Lucknow

The performance of new-ball bowlers could have a big say in which direction this game goes

Ekanth11-Apr-20252:04

Battle of the two best top orders?

Big picture: a top-order collisionTwenty five games into IPL 2025, the top four run-scorers are from Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) top order. If that wasn’t unexpected enough, Shubman Gill isn’t on that list. It has allowed both teams to work around vulnerabilities in their batting. In a season where teams are looking to maximise their scoring throughout the innings despite the situation, GT follow an old-school T20 template. B Sai Sudharsan, who was the player of the match for his 82 in GT’s win over Rajasthan Royals (RR), said, “we try and keep a lot of wickets in hand and go full-on in the last five overs.”Their middle order has remained unburdened as at least one of Gill, Sai Sudharsan or Jos Buttler have scored a fifty in each of their five games so far. Not that that’s made them formulaic. In fact, after the last game GT’s assistant coach Parthiv Patel said, “there are no specific roles as such. As a team, we have a top three, but we keep shuffling the batting order. We react based on conditions and the situation.”Related

That flexibility was on demonstrated by Washington Sundar being promoted to No. 4 in their win against Sunrisers Hyderabad – he made 49 off 29 balls – but then he was replaced with Shahrukh Khan, whose 20-ball 36 built on a well-set platform against RR.For LSG, the chance pairing of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh clicking has bolstered the impact of Nicholas Pooran’s onslaughts and nullified Rishabh Pant’s lack of runs.Form guideLucknow Super Giants WWL ()

Will LSG’s explosive top order face their toughest test yet?

Team news and likely XIIsParthiv had said GT played four seamers against Royals because of the conditions in Ahmedabad. Lucknow is unlikely to be as seamer-friendly and Washington is likely to replace one of the quicks.Gujarat Titans (probable XII): 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 B Sai Sudharsan, 3 Jos Buttler (wk), 4 Sherfane Rutherford, 5 Shahrukh Khan, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 R Sai Kishore, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Prasidh Krishna, 12 Arshad Khan/Kulwant KhejroliyaLucknow Super Giants are unlikely to change their XII from the last game. They have the option of bringing in left-arm spinner Manimaran Siddharth to challenge the two right-handers in GT’s top order.Lucknow Super Giants (probable XII): 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Mitchell Marsh, 3 Nicholas Pooran, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt, wk), 5 Ayush Badoni, 6 David Miller, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Akash Deep, 11 Digvesh Rathi, 12 Ravi BishnoiThe big questionRashid has bowled only one over in the powerplay so far this season. Marsh, Markram and Pooran have sub-120 strike rates against him, Pooran has even been dismissed twice in 66 balls. Rashid has only started to rediscover his form after a poor start to this season, but should he be brought on to bowl earlier given the strength of LSG’s top order? In the spotlight – Digvesh Rathi and Prasidh KrishnaFive of Digvesh Rathi’s seven T20s have come in IPL 2025. His celebrations might have landed him in hot waters but his impact cannot be written off. His economy rate of 7.75 is easily the best of all of LSG’s bowlers so far this season. In LSG’s last game, against Kolkata Knight Riders where 472 runs runs were scored, his economy was 8.25. While Ravi Bishnoi remains the primary legspinner in the side, Rathi’s position is only rising.Digvesh Rathi celebrated in a new way – by writing on the ground•Associated Press

Prasidh Krishna’s pace and height have offered Titans a unique advantage in the middle overs. He has been able to hit the middle of the pitch and get extra bounce to challenge batters on the back foot. He is coming off five wickets in the last games and is a threat to LSG’s middle order.Pitch and conditionsThere are slight chances of rain in the evening but a large stoppage is unlikely. In terms of the pitch, 15 wickets have been taken by pacers so far in Lucknow and spinners only six. Lucknow did roll out a black-soil surface after Pant and LSG mentor Zaheer Khan had expressed disappointment over the lack of assistance for the spinners during their loss to Punjab Kings. But the spinners took only two of the ten wickets to fall in the 472-run game. They might have a better outing this time considering this is a day game.Stats and Trivia LSG and GT are also the only teams to have scored more than 500 runs in the middle-overs this season GT, in this phase have lost only 8 wickets, the joint-least with Delhi Capitals Rashid has dismissed Pant three times and conceded 114 runs in 103 balls across 15 innings. He has a great record against David Miller too, whom he has dismissed 4 times in 59 balls while conceding only 67 runsQuotes”The games that we have won, we’ve kind of found ways to win, been under pressure with our bowling and batting at certain stages and getting through that and still winning, so for me that’s the encouraging part for the team.”
“Ashish Nehra is a very compassionate about the players, and that’s why it seems like [he is animated] from the outside. He cares a lot for people around him. It is good to see the combination of Ashish Nehra and Shubman Gill – they work very well and it’s like hand in glove.”

PIF must regret selling Newcastle star who's like "Keane, Scholes & Zidane"

Newcastle United fans would surely have been glad to see 7pm on Monday, 1st of September roll around. It signalled the end of what was a torrid transfer window for the Magpies, despite late additions. Not only did they miss out on several key signings, including Hugo Ekitike and Bryan Mbuemo, but they also lost a key player.

That player, of course, was Alexander Isak. His transfer saga was the talk of the summer, and things went right until the final day of the window, when his drawn-out departure to Liverpool was finally confirmed.

Over the past couple of years, the Magpies have had to sell players to keep up with PSR regulations, meaning they have got rid of some important figures.

Newcastle’s most recent big sales

There is no doubt that losing Isak this summer will be tough for Newcastle to recover from on the pitch. He is now the player who holds the British transfer record of £125m after his deadline day move to Anfield.

For the Magpies, replacing his record of 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances at St James’ Park will not be easy. In his last two seasons at the club, he’s bagged over 20 goals, with last season’s tally of 23 his best.

However, it is not just Isak who has been a major sale over the years. Losing Allan-Saint Maximin to Al-Ahli back in 2023 saw them lose attacking flair on the wing. He made 124 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals and assisting a further 21.

Another player who recently left the club under the PIF regime, who could have become an important part of Eddie Howe’s squad, was Yankuba Minteh.

Since leaving the North East for the South Coast and Brighton, he has seven goals and five assists in 40 games.

There is one sale that really sticks out in recent seasons, however, who has gone on to do great things since leaving St James’ Park.

Elliot Anderson is Newcastle’s most frustrating sale

The summer of 2024 was one of the key time periods during which Newcastle had to make sales to comply with PSR. That was the summer Minteh departed, although looking back, he was not the most frustrating sale.

Instead, most Newcastle fans would surely agree that Whitley Bay-born midfielder Elliot Anderson was the one who got away that summer. He joined Nottingham Forest for a fee of £35m, which represented pure profit as he is an academy graduate.

The boyhood Newcastle fan made 55 appearances at St James’ Park before his departure to the East Midlands. He has gone from strength to strength across his 45 appearances in Garibaldi Red, scoring twice and assisting seven goals.

That was summed up with a sensational player of the match performance on England debut last week at Villa Park. He ran the show for Thomas Tuchel’s side, and talkSPORT pundit Max Scott later said that he plays like he’s “Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Zinedine Zidane” combined.

Based on his statistics from the last couple of seasons at Forest, it is easy to see where the praise has come from.

For example, last term, he averaged 1.2 key passes and 4 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, and in three Premier League games in 2025/26, he has already averaged 1.7 key passes and 4.3 tackles and interceptions per game.

Newcastle fans must surely look at their academy star as one that got away. A midfield of Anderson, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali would have been a sight to behold at St James’ Park.

Even though Anderson was sold to help boost PSR, this is surely a move that PIF and Howe regret, considering how well he is performing for club and country.

'Chew you up and spit you out' – Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac sent warning as Wrexham adapt to life in the Championship

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has praised Wrexham’s steady improvement under Phil Parkinson as they adapt to life in the Championship — but warned Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac that the division can “chew you up and spit you out” if complacency sets in. The newly-promoted Red Dragons currently sit 18th after a string of battling draws.

  • Wrexham facing the trials and tribulations of the Championship

Wrexham’s remarkable rise under their famous owners has carried them all the way to the Championship, but the step up has proven testing. After a shaky start, losing three of their first five, Phil Parkinson’s men have steadied the ship with a four-game unbeaten run. However, Goodman believes the team must remain sharp or risk being exposed by the unforgiving nature of England’s second tier.

Wrexham warned of complacency in the Championship

“Yes, I've seen improvement from Wrexham,” Goodman told . “They've gone from losing three of the first five games to being unbeaten in their last four against decent opponents — that’s progress.”

"The important bit is that Phil Parkinson appears to have found a settled team, which really helps. They're unchanged in the last two and only Callum Doyle dropped out from the team that beat Norwich.

"They've got one or two injuries that will come back into the team, they've started to get new players up to speed, fitness-wise, and they've also got new players understanding how Phil Parkinson wants them to play.

"So, there are definitely positives. The biggest of which is in the last three games, according to OPTA stats, they've only given up two big chances. In the two games prior to that, they gave up eight big chances, and that had been their biggest struggle when adapting to Championship level.

“There are definitely signs of progress in that defensive department, which has always been a massive part of Phil Parkinson's DNA. His sides are known for being hard to play against and hard to beat. You can see signs of that being the case.

“But they can't rest on their laurels. Because this league, if you do, will chew you up and spit you out.”

Yet, as they face their toughest test yet, the club’s focus now shifts to adapting and sustaining consistency at this higher level.

Tottenham eye three late signings for Frank after missing out on Eze

Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for three late-summer signings after missing out on Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, but time is quickly running out for chairman Daniel Levy and the Lilywhites recruitment team.

Spurs were forced to return to their transfer drawing board for a new playmaker yet again earlier this week, after their north London rivals hijacked a once-advanced deal for Eze.

The 27-year-old agreed personal terms to join Thomas Frank’s side, with the finances of a deal also struck with Palace, so it appeared only a matter of time before they welcomed the player to N17.

However, Kai Havertz’s injury prompted Arsenal to mount a sensational late move for their ex-academy gem after weeks of groundwork, despite initially hesitating, and once the Gunners came in, Eze’s choice was crystal clear.

It marks one of the stories of the transfer window, but for Tottenham, it is nothing but frustration.

Since the Eze humiliation, Spurs have been linked with a host of alternatives – including Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche, Como’s Nico Paz, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, Bournemouth midfielder (and boyhood Lilywhites supporter) Alex Scott, RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, Southampton sensation Tyler Dibling and Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss.

RB Leipzig'sXaviSimonsreacts after the match

However, the likes of El Khannouss, Dibling and Simons are already in talks over moves to different clubs, so if they’re serious, Tottenham may need to pull off a late hijack of their own.

Tottenham eyeing late moves for number 10, winger and centre-back

To make matters more complicated, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, Tottenham have other items on the agenda away from their search for a playmaker.

It is believed that Spurs are eyeing late signings of a number 10, winger and a centre-back before the deadline on September 1, so Levy has plenty to do, and with very little time to do it.

In terms of a winger and defender, Tottenham are expected to mount another push for Savinho from Man City, with the two sides going head-to-head today, and there is believed to be an interest in Brentford captain Nathan Collins.

Did Cristiano Ronaldo 'upset balance' at Juventus? Federico Bernardeschi gives honest take on 'unique' CR7

Federico Bernardeschi has refuted any suggestion that Cristiano Ronaldo “upset balance” during his time at Juventus. The Portuguese superstar completed a stunning transfer to Turin in 2018 when bringing a record-shattering spell at Real Madrid to a close. He would go on to spend three seasons with the Bianconeri, helping them to five trophies – including two Serie A titles.

Ronaldo's record: Goal tally for Juventus

Juve supporters were delighted to welcome Ronaldo onto their books when a switch that few people saw coming was completed. He had scored 44 goals through as many appearances in the previous season with Real – taking his overall tally for the Liga giants to 450 through 438 appearances. He was still very much at the peak of his powers when heading to Italy.

Ronaldo made the expected impact with Juve, breaking the 30-goal barrier in two campaigns for the Old Lady of Turin. He became a centurion once again, with the net being found on 101 occasions through 134 games. CR7 helped Juve to cement their domestic dominance, while also remaining competitive on the Champions League stage.

AdvertisementGettyWork ethic: Ronaldo relentless in his approach

Some stunning efforts were recorded by the Portuguese, including his towering header against Sampdoria in December 2019. Questions were, however, asked throughout his time in Italy of whether he was the right fit for Juve. His relentless pursuit of perfection is also considered to rub club colleagues up the wrong way at times, with not everybody sharing his work ethic when it comes to early morning and late night gym sessions.

Bernardeschi is, however, adamant that Ronaldo was never anything but a positive presence for Juve. He was not always one of the boys, with his celebrity status forcing a somewhat shielded existence to be lived off the pitch, but he was happy to form part of dressing room banter and let his guard down when clear of the cameras that follow his every move.

Ronaldo happy to get involved in dressing room banter

Speaking to , Bernardeschi said: “From a locker room perspective, he’s an exceptional guy. As a player, there’s nothing more to add, he’s sensational. He’s more humble and sensitive than you might think.

“As his team-mate, you must understand that he’s unique, and don’t compare what he does to what you do. If you’re aware of this, you’ll have no problem. He has his routine, he has things you need to know, be aware of. He’s your team-mate, but he’s not like you. If I want to go get an ice cream in Turin with Cristiano, it’s a different story. He laughs and jokes, a truly down-to-earth guy. When I came in, he always said: ‘There’s the stylish Italian’. He laughs and jokes with everyone.”

GettyRonaldo not to blame for Champions League failure

Ex-Italy international Bernardeschi, who is now on the books of Bologna after spending three years in MLS with Toronto FC, added on Ronaldo supposedly disrupting Juventus’ tactical approach: “No, I don’t think he upset any balance. In the first season after his arrival, we really could have won the Champions League, I truly believe it.

“To say that Cristiano Ronaldo upset the balance within Juventus is not true; it would be hiding behind an alibi. I believe there were several factors that led to the loss of that DNA, that secret of transmitting values. If Juve didn’t win the Champions League with Ronaldo, it’s not his fault, it’s everyone’s fault. Against Atletico, he scored three goals, but everyone else had a wonderful performance. The following season, it was quite the opposite.”
