Former All-Star Pitcher Kyle Gibson Announces Retirement From MLB

After 13 seasons in MLB, starting pitcher Kyle Gibson announced his retirement from baseball on Thursday on the podcast

The 2021 All-Star has the second-most starts for a pitcher since 2013 with 328, only one behind Max Scherzer's 329.

Gibson was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Twins in the 2009 MLB draft, but he didn't make his major league debut until 2013 after he underwent Tommy John surgery as a Triple A prospect in '11. Gibson spent seven seasons in Minnesota as a starting pitcher, finishing his tenure there in 2019 with a 67–68 record and 4.52 ERA.

After his time with the Twins, Gibson played for four more teams: the Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles (twice) and St. Louis Cardinals. His second stint in Baltimore this season is where Gibson's career officially came to an end. He went 0–3 in four starts for the Orioles, and was released by the team on May 20.

The pitcher did sign a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays and started in four games for the Triple A Durham Bulls, but he opted out of his contract last month.

Gibson's overall career record finishes at 112–111. He threw for a total of 1,878 innings to post 1,520 strikeouts while surrendering 1,937 hits and 1,021 runs.

Dottin goes back to Gujarat Giants to cap her year of new beginnings

She’s coming off a run to the T20 World Cup semi-final with West Indies and the WBBL title with Melbourne Renegades, but she says: “I still have a lot more room for improvement”

Shashank Kishore16-Dec-2024West Indies allrounder Deandra Dottin had just finished a team meeting ahead of the T20I series opener against India in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, when her name came up for bidding – the very first one out of the bag – at the WPL auction. West Indies captain Hayley Matthews and the coaching staff were in the team room with her to watch the proceedings.Although “anxious”, Dottin was confident of finding a bidder. She didn’t know, however, that she would go for “such a high price” – more than three times her base price of INR 50 lakh. When the paddle came down, she had been signed by Gujarat Giants for INR 1.7 crore (USD 200,000 approx.), which was nearly three times the price she had fetched (INR 60 lakh) at the inaugural auction in February 2023.”Well, to be honest, I knew that I was one of the big ones in the mini-auction, but to be picked first, I never expected that,” Dottin told ESPNcricinfo after Sunday’s game, where her 28-ball 52 was one of the few highlights for the visitors in a big defeat.Related

WPL 2025 auction: Uncapped Indians make a splash

A Sunday to savour for Kamalini and family

“For my calibre and how I go about my batting, I guess that being a part of WPL is a chance to explore and showcase my talents and learn a lot from other players as well, even the younger players, and also just to give feedback and share my knowledge. So, I really appreciate being a part of the WPL and for being selected by Gujarat Giants.”I’ll be honest, it felt really good to know [that multiple teams were tussling for me].”Giants staved off fierce bidding from UP Warriorz to secure Dottin’s services. The signing heralds a new chapter to the Giants-Dottin story, which began in controversial circumstances when Dottin was ruled out by the franchise days before the inaugural edition due to an “injury” which she disputed publicly through a series of social media posts. That incident, which Dottin termed as “unfortunate” upon reflection earlier this year, didn’t seem to have any bearing this time around, with the franchise going all out to get her. In between that infamous incident and being picked on Sunday, Dottin had found no takers at the auction ahead of WPL 2024.For a team that finished last in the first two editions and is in dire need of batting firepower, going for Dottin seemed an obvious choice, especially since she also lends bowling depth and is an electric fielder. This is something head coach Michael Klinger confirmed after securing Dottin, who recently won the the WBBL with Melbourne Renegades.

“I also think that coming back in the World Cup then going over to the Big Bash, I want to do well every time I step on the field. There’s no options, there’s no fear.”Deandra Dottin

“Definitely WBBL form had a massive role,” Klinger, who also coaches Sydney Thunder at the WBBL, said. “Her power, the way she can change games in few overs with the bat, her speed and accuracy with the ball – she is a multi-dimensional player and that’s something we were after. Also, her role in West Indies making the semi-final of the T20 World Cup, we’ve seen some fantastic performances that we were after.”Dottin has had an interesting year overall. She came out of international retirement just prior to the T20 World Cup in the UAE in October, and helped West Indies reach their first semi-final since 2018. She aggregated 120 runs in the tournament, at a strike rate of 162.16, the best strike rate for any batter who faced at least 20 balls. In the WBBL that followed, she struck 148 runs at a strike rate of 151.02, her cameos often match-turning, and also picked up 10 wickets. But Dottin doesn’t believe she’s quite near her best yet.”I feel really good and I think my current form is… I don’t think it’s actually 100%, I still have a lot more room for improvement,” she said. “But I also think that coming back in the World Cup then going over to the Big Bash, I want to do well every time I step on the field. There’s no options, there’s no fear.”Every day won’t go as planned, but it’s how you actually move forward when you have bad days [which is important]. The determination and the passion and the fight I have with me, [but] I think I still have a lot more room for improvement. I’m happy with it [where my career is] at the moment and where it’s heading, but there’s still more work to be done.”

Luis Robert Jr. Destinations: Best Landing Spots for White Sox' OF at Trade Deadline

With the trade deadline just about a week away, one of the biggest names floated as a potential player on the move is Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr.

The White Sox have lived up to their lowly expectations in 2025, sitting dead last in the AL Central just after the All-Star break. Already 30 games below .500, it's clear that contention isn't in the cards in Chicago.

What's less clear is when their long rebuild will finally start to take shape, and whether Robert is part of those plans at 28 years old. Once heralded as a star of the future, Robert's days with the organization could be numbered, especially given he has a $20 million team option in his contract set to come into play in 2026. Whether they'd be willing to pick up that option remains pivotal to Robert's future in Chicago.

Robert has struggled at the plate this season. Through 83 games, he owns a .636 OPS and just a 0.6 bWAR, though he's shown signs of life of late. Robert has 10 home runs, 40 RBIs and 25 stolen bases on the year, while playing solid defense out in center field.

If he can rediscover his previous form at the plate, as he's just two seasons removed from a breakout 2023 campaign in which he hit 38 home runs and had a .857 OPS, he'd be a sensational addition for a contending team at the deadline.

We're going to look at some possible fits for the outfielder at the MLB trade deadline.

Philadelphia Phillies

Robert could provide a solid upgrade in center field for the Phillies, who currently split the position between Johan Rojas and Brandon Marsh. Rojas, who has started 43 games in center field this year, is a strong defender but doesn't provide much offensive upside, owning a .580 OPS with just one home run and 16 RBIs this year. Marsh has made 57 starts in center field, but he too hasn't done much at the plate, logging a .662 OPS.

Moving from a middling White Sox lineup to a potent one such as Philadelphia's could be the spark Robert needs to get back to his usual standards at the plate, as it would hopefully enable him to see some better pitches. He remains an elite base stealer, which fits well into the Phillies' aggressive style on the base paths, and his defense wouldn't be a downgrade by any means.

Seattle Mariners

Seattle Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena, right, talks with Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. / Matt Marton-Imagn Images

Already equipped with one of the best pitching staffs in baseball (when healthy), the Mariners need to acquire another big bat as they look to contend for a championship in 2025. While Julio Rodriguez has center field on lock in Seattle, adding Robert to the mix at left field––and possibly moving Randy Arozarena to DH––would allow them to get another potential game-changer in the lineup while enhancing their defense.

T-Mobile Park isn't known as the most hitter-friendly among MLB stadiums, but playing alongside Rodriguez, Arozarena, and an MVP candidate in Cal Raleigh could lead to some better quality at-bats for Robert as he looks to rebound offensively.

New York Mets

Tyrone Taylor has been effective defensively for the Mets this season, but he's not been a reliable bat, and often finds himself hitting in the nine-hole. Robert, for all intents and purposes, would provide an upgrade, even during his down-year at the plate. Robert owns better defensive metrics than Taylor, and his career-worst .636 OPS is still an improvement on Taylor's OPS of .572.

The Mets are also a team that may not balk at the opportunity to keep Robert long-term. With the $20 million club option hanging over the deal, Steve Cohen may be more willing than other owners to pony up and bring Robert back at that price tag if the production matches.

Home Run Derby Ball Kid Comically Robbed a Junior Caminero Blast in Final Round

The 2025 Home Run Derby at Truist Park in Atlanta had it all. Dingers over 500 feet, errant hit-by-pitches and even a home run robbery. Yes, a robbed homer—in the Derby.

In the final round between eventual winner Cal Raleigh and runner-up Junior Caminero, one of the youth fielders shagging balls in the outfield committed a robbery. Just before Caminero called timeout before his last chance to catch Raleigh, a shagger leaped and incredibly came down with a ball headed over the left field wall.

Caminero's support crew of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Fernando Tatís Jr. and Elly De La Cruz surrounded him as the clock stopped, calling for a review to ensure the long ball counted. The homer did end up counting, but what a hilarious moment during a critical moment of the Derby.

"I paid him off," Raleigh joked after the Derby.

The Mariners even thanked the shagger for his service:

Caminero wasn't able to catch Raleigh, ending the final round with 15 homers compared to Big Dumper's 18.

After the snag, the broadcast quickly pointed out a similar moment actually happened before. Forty years ago, Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg had a home run robbed in the very first Home Run Derby in 1985 when a nearby high school team played their positions in the field. That event wasn't televised, so kudos to the broadcast crew for instantly recalling that.

Even if the catch didn't count, what a funny moment to end this year's Derby. That kid has a lot to talk about when he's back at school.

Man Utd can replace Hojlund with "the best talent the academy has ever seen"

One of the most intriguing young players in Manchester United’s academy at the moment is 17-year-old Chido Obi.

The former Arsenal player has a superb record at academy level. He scored 32 goals in 21 official games for Arsenal’s U18s and once bagged ten goals in a 14-3 win over Liverpool U16s. It’s safe to say he knows where the net is.

The Denmark U20s striker featured eight times for the Red Devils at senior level last term, and is a graduate of their academy, having made his first-team debut for the club. Although he’s yet to score, he has certainly impressed in his few short cameos.

In the long run, perhaps he could make the perfect replacement for Rasmus Hojlund, who is now thriving at Napoli on loan.

Hojlund's 2025/26 season in numbers

Since leaving United on loan in the summer, Hojlund has enjoyed great success for his new club Napoli and his international side, Denmark. In his last ten appearances for both club and country, he’s scored and assisted nine times.

That includes a fantastic run of form in the past four games.

Hojlund, who wears the number 19 in Naples, has found the back of the net on six occasions in that time, chipping in with one assist, too. That record stretches across the ongoing international break too.

Although he showed flashes of his best form in that famous Red shirt, the 22-year-old struggled for consistency.

He only managed to bag 26 times in 95 games, yet strikes like this one against Viktoria Plzen showed the type of quality he possesses.

The Dane’s current form is certainly a hot streak, who never really managed to find his feet at Old Trafford. There is a chance he could join Napoli permanently next summer, with the Scudetto winners having a buy option in the deal.

If that is the case, and he departs Old Trafford, United might already have his replacement brewing and it’s not Obi or the in-form Benjamin Sesko.

Man United's in-house Hojlund replacement

At the moment, all signs point to the fact that Hojlund will leave the club next summer, given that he has a buy clause and is playing so well.

Of course, in the long run, Obi could be the man to replace him, although there is an even bigger talent than the Dane.

Without doubt, one of the most exciting talents in English football at the moment is JJ Gabriel. At just 15 years of age, he is comfortably one of the best players in the U18s Premier League, against players three or four years his senior.

Academy Scoop, who covers the Red Devils youth sides over on X, described Gabriel as the “talisman” of Darren Fletcher’s side, while as the MEN outline, some academy followers believe he is “the best talent United’s academy has ever seen.”

That is huge praise, especially when you factor in the fact that he is playing three age groups up.

The numbers behind Gabriel’s form this season show just how much of a talent he is. He’s found the back of the net seven times in six appearances, with all of those goals coming from centre-forward.

He can also operate on the left wing, but Fletcher moved him centrally, and he’s since been thriving.

Stats from Transfermarkt

It is easy to see why he was hailed as “one of the most exciting talents in the world” by the Manchester Evening News’ Steven Railston. He is a technically superb attacker, with his strike against Manchester City at the end of September showing how quickly he can change direction, before firing home a well-struck effort.

It is certainly interesting to see Gabriel operate as a striker for the Red Devils’ academy sides. He clearly has bags of technical quality, and playing in this advanced role has shown that he has an eye for goal, too.

It will be fascinating to see when Gabriel makes his debut for the first team, with reports suggesting he will train with Amorim’s side this term.

He’s already shown great ability in the academy, and Amorim may well decide to unleash him this season, as Mikel Arteta did with Max Dowman.

He would certainly be an upgrade on Hojlund in the long run if he adapts to senior football as quickly as he did to the U18s.

Newcastle have signed a "monster" who is another Woltemade-type player

Newcastle United’s Premier League season has yet to get going so far this campaign, with positive results often followed up by a disappointing defeat.

Indeed, after getting the better of Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in the middle of September, Eddie Howe’s Magpies then went on a stretch of form that saw defeats happen at the hands of Barcelona and Arsenal in both the Champions League and top-flight, before returning to winning ways in league action against Nottingham Forest at the start of October.

Yet, despite pushing Ange Postecoglou closer to the cliff-edge with that 2-0 victory, the Toon slipped to a third Premier League loss of the season away at Brighton and Hove Albion last time out.

It doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom, however, with Nick Woltemade sticking out once more as an ice-cold finisher under pressure.

It was his stylish back-heel that nearly kick-started a late comeback on the South Coast, only for Danny Welbeck to secure a brace.

The stats that make Woltemade one of the best in the Premier League

There was an unbelievable pressure on the German’s shoulders when relocating to Newcastle, with £69m splashed out on him to be one of Alexander Isak’s flashy replacements.

He hasn’t been paralysed with any fear since joining, with that delicate finish finding the back of the net against the Seagulls.

That means he has four goals from just five Premier League outings so far, which has led writer Thomas Hammond to hail him as an “incredible” talent to watch.

Despite Newcastle wobbling in form, the 6-foot-6 menace has the highest goal conversion rate (42.9%) in the Premier League so far this season with a hope surely on the Bremen-born striker’s end that the goals keep on coming, but they result in more wins being put on the board, as well.

Possessing an enormous frame, but a delicacy in possession of the ball, Woltemade’s profile is like very few in the game and he’s immediately started demonstrating why PIF spent so much to bring him to Newcastle.

The clinical number 27’s attacking display was definitely a crumb of positivity to take away from the 2-1 loss. Indeed, not everyone in Newcastle’s forward line had the same level of end product.

His teammate up top in Anthony Elanga, on the other hand, was dished out with far more criticism at the final whistle than glowing comments.

The Swede was one of the most creative in the division last season, registering 11 assists in the Premier League but since relocating to the north east, has yet to score in his first 11 outings. He has also registered just one assist.

It’s safe to say Newcastle’s summer business has been rather hit or miss, but Woltemade isn’t the only success story from their latest round of recruitment.

Newcastle "monster" is another Woltemade-type player

Away from Elanga failing to settle on Tyneside, other more senior members of the Magpies team are continually letting Howe down so far this season.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Joelinton springs to mind as one example, with the Newcastle boss not fazed whatsoever when hooking the Brazilian off at half-time after another sub-par display was put in against Fabian Hurzeler’s men.

Moreover, Dan Burn struggled again in the left-back spot versus the Seagulls, squandering possession 18 times in total, alongside surprisingly winning just one aerial duel.

While Burn and Joelinton look to be on their way out as members of the St James’ Park old guard, Malick Thiaw looks ready to become a starter for many years to come at his new employers, as another Bundesliga gem has been unearthed.

Thiaw has been so impressive so far that even Fabian Schar has had to sit out contests recently for the Magpies’ “monster” – as he has been previously labelled by journalist Martino Puccio – to gain a starting spot.

Woltemade has made that lone striker spot his own, but Thiaw – also signed from German shores – has made that central defensive berth his own too. Now, the pairing are two of the first names on Howe’s team sheet.

Much like his colossal teammate, Thiaw has stood out as a battler already for Howe and Co, winning four aerial duels against the Seagulls, perhaps ensuring that the scoreline only stayed at 2-1 in the home side’s favour.

But, also, as Woltemade has displayed, the rock-solid number 12 is very much comfortable with the ball at his feet, with his well-rounded nature from the get-go, even seeing Newcastle-based blog Mouth of the Tyne state that he is “one of the signings of the summer.”

At just 24 years of age, and at a modest £30m cost, it’s hard to go against that statement, with both Thiaw and Woltemade surely looking to cement their presences as reliable first-teamers in matches to come.

Newcastle can forget Elanga by unleashing 19-year-old "star in the making"

Eddie Howe could have a surprise Anthony Elanga replacement up his sleeve in this exciting 19-year-old talent.

Kyle Schwarber Reaches 40 Home Runs With Colossal Grand Slam, Widens NL Lead

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber was on the doorstep of 40 home runs for just three innings.

He mashed his 39th long ball of the year in the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles Monday night on a massive shot to the third deck at Citizens Bank Park. The homer gave him the National League lead, moving one past Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Then, as the Phillies batted around the order in the sixth, he hit another blast to right field—this time for a grand slam.

The 390-foot shot was Schwarber's 40th homer of the season, now two past Ohtani for the most in the NL. The next closest NL player is Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs with 27, although Eugenio Suárez and his 36 homers moved to the American League at last week's trade deadline.

Schwarber's career-best total is 47 home runs, which he notched in 2023. The season before, he had 46. Now, he has reached 40 with 50 games to go.

With the massive Monday, he moves into the MLB lead in RBIs with 94, surpassing Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh (88). Raleigh currently leads baseball with 42 home runs, but Schwarber is right on his heels with three homers in two games.
