Man Utd ace Daniel James is still incredibly frustrating

Another derby, and another Manchester United victory.

For a man who led Cardiff to relegation, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surprisingly appears to have the number of serial trophy winner, Pep Guardiola. Funny how football works.

And on Sunday afternoon, the Red Devils were imperious from start to finish, executing their game-plan to perfection. Lining up in a 5-3-2 formation with Bruno Fernandes in behind Anthony Martial and Daniel James, United were clinical when needed, and barely gave City a sniff.

As per Sofascore, despite Guardiola’s side having a staggering 73% of the ball, they could only manage four shots on target – two less than what United registered. But whilst Solskjaer’s pre-match plan was vindicated by the result, James in particular, continued to frustrate.

After enjoying a blistering start to the season for his new club – he scored three goals in his opening four Premier League games – the Welshman has gone without finding the back of the net in the top-flight since.

And against City, his performance certainly had a sense of deja vu to it. So much promise, but very little substance. Once again, he showed on numerous occasions that his pace continues to be a terrifying weapon for opposition defenders, but equally, his end product leaves little to be scared of.

He provided no key passes whatsoever, made just eight passes in total over the course of the 90 minutes, and failed to accurately deliver a single cross either. At one point, in what looked like a devastating United break-away, James chose to take the shot from a tight angle rather than showing the awareness to pick out an onrushing Fernandes. Both the Portuguese star’s and Solskjaer’s reaction of frustrating disbelief said it all.

Because his speed offers such a different dimension to what United have in their locker right now, Solskjaer will no doubt find it difficult leaving him out of the team. But James’ tendency to repeat the same mistakes, and not improve his end product, will surely be leaving the Norwegian to tear his hair out.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must make this tough decision regarding a key star.

Stuart Dallas gives honest admission about Leeds run-in

Leeds United hold their own fate in their hands once again, only this time they are showing no signs of letting up like last season.

What’s he said?

The Whites are on a run of five straight victories which has seen them leapfrog West Brom into first position in the Championship, and with only nine games remaining, they have every chance of clinching a return to the top-flight for the first time since 2004.

Even though they have opened up a seven-point cushion to the playoffs, last season’s late collapse will be very much still on the minds of some at Elland Road while there is no easy game in the division either as Stuart Dallas has reiterated in a recent interview with LUTV.

United head to Cardiff City on Sunday afternoon, a side who are also fighting for the chance to earn promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds’ utility man said:

“You’ve seen the results in the league, it’s crazy.

“We will go again against Cardiff next week, if they win they can go into the Play-Offs, so it’s another tough one.

“There’s nine games to go, nine cup finals and I’m sure the rest of the season will be a rollercoaster.

“We have to do everything we can do to be ready for the next match, we are professionals, we know what’s at stake and we don’t want to let that go.

“When you see the end results and what we can achieve, you’ll do anything to get there.”

Stuart Dallas to LUTV.

Encouraging signs

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are in a rich vein of form at the minute, but what makes it even more impressive is the fact that they are yet to concede in all of their five wins.

In that run, they have battled Bristol City, Reading and Huddersfield who have only failed to score a goal this season in 30% or fewer of their matches.

This time last year, Leeds lost five of their last ten matches to sink to third place at the expense of Norwich City and Sheffield United – they had held the throne for 33 of their opening 42 outings and didn’t once drop below fourth place.

But things feel a lot different now, especially as the west Yorkshiremen look imperious in their pursuit of clinching that Premier League spot and are certainly dispelling that ‘Bielsa Burnout’ myth at the same time, too.

talkSPORT writer issues verdict on season end for Leeds

talkSPORT have provided their verdicts on how the season should pan out, and one writer’s thoughts will surely anger those of a Leeds United persuasion.

What’s been said?

The suspension of football across the globe has created confusion for many and the Championship is no exception with a thrilling title race set to go down to the wire with only nine games remaining.

Leeds, who are seven points clear of the playoff positions had looked set to end a 16-year absence from the English top-flight, but there is now no certainty on that happening.

Over at talkSPORT, they have pondered the question on whether or not the season should continue when possible, or be voided completely, leading to the following bold claim.

Anton Stanley, the features editor, believes the latter and has even thrown in a wry apology to United fans. He said:

Only one fair outcome

Such a decision has the potential to open up a legal can of worms, especially as teams in the second-tier have already ground 37 matches out this term under the presumption that they will be entitled to their worthy rewards.

In Leeds’ case, that’ll be a moment of pure history – a return to the Premier League, something not witnessed at Elland Road since 2004.

Euro 2020 has even been postponed for a year, rather than outright cancelled, according to reports.

There’s only one fair solution, but with no timeframe on football resuming, it could be a dangerous wait to see what happens.

The season should be played out at the very next opportunity – whether that’s from April 3rd or later this summer remains to be seen.

Mere financial compensation, as outlined in the suggestion above, would be a disaster move, too. Aston Villa won around £170m from their playoff triumph last season – who’s going to stump that up, then?

Football may need to be patient before deciding the very best – and fairest – outcome.

And in other news, Leeds’ unsung hero for 2019/20 pictured…

Kamil Grosicki is being underutilised at West Brom

West Brom have got a lot right this season when it comes to bringing players in.

Matheus Pereira has been an absolute gem of a find, providing 12 assists already this term, while Grady Diangana has contributed to 10 goals in just 21 appearances for the Baggies.

Callum Robinson joined in January and he quickly earned a lot of plaudits from supporters, but there is one January signing who is being misused.

Of course, we’re talking about Kamil Grosicki.

On face value, the winger doesn’t look like that good of a buy, he’s not scored and assisted just once since joining the club and that was over six weeks ago.

Watch West Bromwich Albion Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, he’s played just 137 minutes of action for the Baggies, and that simply doesn’t make any sense.

Bringing in a man who contributed to 21 Championship goals last term for just £800k looked like an absolute masterstroke from Luke Dowling, but that investment has quickly been nullified by the manager.

For one reason or another, the Croatian has been hesitant to start the winger, and that has made what looked to be one of the signings of the window appear to be quite a poor purchase.

There’s no doubting that Grosicki has what it takes to make a real impact at The Hawthorns – he was a star at Hull chipping in with nine goals and 12 assists last term, but he’s not been given a chance to replicate those numbers with Albion.

To make matters even worse, there has been a space in the squad for him.

Grosicki’s favoured position may be on the left, but he’s more than capable of playing on the right, with 114 appearances there throughout his career, and there has been an opening on the wing in West Brom’s team.

Indeed, an injury to Diangana has seen Pereira move out wide, where he is much less effective, contributing to just three goals in eight starts on the right, compared to 14 in 19 in the middle.

Surely, that spot should have been reserved for Grosicki, not only to get the Pole involved more but to get the best out of Pereira.

However, Bilic hasn’t quite seen it that way, and the former Hull man has started to look like a bit of a dud signing through no fault of his own.

In other news, this Steve Clarke signing has to be considered one of the most baffling West Brom have ever made.

Rangers fans react to Peter Lovenkrands’ tweet

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to a tweet from Peter Lovenkrands, who revealed that BBC Scotland are planning to broadcast the 2002 Scottish FA Cup final.

The Old Firm is one of the most intense, respected and iconic derbies in world football, and there’s nothing quite like when the age-old foes meet in a cup final.

Unfortunately for Steven Gerrard, this season’s League Cup final saw their arch-rivals continue their domestic dominance, but the 2002 Scottish Cup was an entirely different story.

While the aforementioned defeat was a gritty and tight match won by a single goal from a set-piece, the Gers’ memorable 2002 triumph saw five goals, including a last minute winner from Lovenkrands, his second strike of the match.

The 40 year-old won two league titles and three league cups but the 3-2 win in 2002 was his only FA Cup success.

Liverpool potential XI for 2020/21

Liverpool have shown just how dominant they can be this season, as they currently sit 25 points ahead of anybody else in the Premier League.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, Jurgen Klopp and the club’s hierarchy will not want to rest on their laurels, especially after they were knocked out of the Champions League.

There have been various reports around players potentially both leaving and joining Liverpool in recent weeks.

FFC has used this to show how Liverpool could look ahead of the 2020/21 season if they go on a spending spree.

There is no way that Alisson will be taken out of the Liverpool goal, while Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson remain in the backline.

It can be argued that Liverpool lack quality depth at centre-back behind Joe Gomez. AS reported that their shortlist for this position is Jose Maria Gimenez, Dayot Upamecano and Alessandro Bastoni of Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig and Internazionale respectively. We opted for the Frenchman, as he arguably represents the best value, with The Daily Mail reporting that he will have a £55m release clause in the summer.

Liverpool have various talented options in the midfield, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are the two who remain in the lineup. They could be joined by Bayer Leverkusen talisman Kai Havertz, as The Daily Mail have suggested they are looking to bring in, but could cost £100m.

Their current front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane may seem almost untouchable, but the Egyptian is actually the only one of this infamous trio who stays in the team.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

It has been suggested by The Mirror that Mane is wanted by Real Madrid, who are willing to offer £140m for the Senegalese star. They may eventually choose to cash in on him, which would allow them to move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho. Jan Aage Fjortoft has suggested that the Reds are the frontrunners for the 20-year-old, who would cost €130m (£119m), but added that they need to sell one of their big wingers first.

The Athletic have linked Liverpool with the £51m signing of Timo Werner, who has to be one of the few strikers who could probably take Roberto Firmino out of the team.

Liverpool may be able to raise funds for moves such as these, with James Pearce suggesting loanees Harry Wilson and Marko Grujic could be sold for a combined £40m, while the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Dejan Lovren could also be leaving.

Meanwhile, one Liverpool youngster has been impressing Jurgen Klopp.

Bamford reveals the lockdown regime set up for Leeds players

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford revealed that players have had to send in pictures of their weight every day they are in lockdown, in an interview with iNews.

What did he say?

Marcelo Bielsa has a reputation for his strict and intense training methods and it seems that there has been no respite for his squad during lockdown.

According to Bamford, the players have had plenty of help keeping fit at home, with equipment delivered to them before the United Kingdom even went into lockdown.

“The uncertainty makes it difficult but then came the news last week with the EFL saying we are not going to be back training until 16 May at the earliest,” he said in an interview with iNews.“At least we now actually have that date to look forward to.”According to The Guardian, there are plans to restart the EFL season in June, with the aim of completing 341 outstanding fixtures in jut 56 days.Bamford added: “Even before the UK’s official lockdown, the fitness staff dropped off exercise bikes and gym equipment at our homes, so we are well prepared. There is method to everything Marcelo does and we have to send in pictures of our weight every day. I’m actually coping fine.”Match fitIt is no surprise that Bielsa has installed a strict training programme for his squad while they are in isolation. With just seven matches to play, the club will be desperate not to miss out on promotion for a second consecutive season, and staying fit during these unprecedented circumstances is a vital part of ensuring that the players are fully fit and ready to finish the job when the season does eventually restart.

Tottenham Hotspur: Fans drool over Son Heung-min’s goal of the season award

Son Heung-min has been given the Match of the Day Goal of the Season award for his exceptional effort against Nick Pope in a Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ever since he arrived at White Hart Lane in 2015, Son has scored some phenomenal goals for Spurs over the years. As the speedy dribbler is best known for being a potent counter-attacking threat, it is fair to say his wonder goal during the 5-0 thrashing of Burnley is no exception to the rule.

The official Match of the Day account posted the announcement on Twitter and Tottenham fan page @LastWordOnSpurs shared the news with footage of the South Korean’s goal at home to the Clarets, a shot that put the game far beyond Sean Dyche’s men as Spurs entered the halftime break with a 3-0 lead. The 27-year-old danced through a number of opponents, including Robbie Brady and James Tarkowski, before thumping the ball past the helpless goalkeeper with a calm right-footed finish (The Guardian).

Jose Mourinho’s side went on to comfortably dispatch Dyche’s team thanks to further efforts from Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko, although Son’s solo strike understandably stole the show. Unsurprisingly, loads of Spurs fans drooled over the fan favourite’s award, with one supporter describing the “piece of individual genius” as “amazing,” and another adding “nice one Sonny.”

Big picture

There was a time when all an out-of-form Pakistan cricketer needed to do was turn up against India, and he would magically regain his touch. How India will be hoping they can do some of that when they play Pakistan in their middle Super Eight match on Sunday.Confused, low on confidence, playing as if with the weight of the world on their shoulders, India find themselves in a tight corner. Their trusted players are not performing, and some of the reserves provided by the selectors are not good enough. And for the first time there are questions around the captain’s place in the side: he strikes at 110 runs per 100 balls, has never scored a T20I fifty, and twice in India’s three last defeats he has hurt the side’s momentum, failing to score a run a ball in the latter half of the innings. One more defeat, and India won’t even have a backdoor entry left after their massive negative run-rate.India do seem to have turned the tables from the time Pakistan used to dominate this “rivalry”. Since the start of 2006, India have won 15 and lost eight internationals against Pakistan, but still trail the head-to-head 58 to 81. Pakistan, though, will be feeling good about their game after having pulled off an improbable win over South Africa. And their bowlers might not have had the best of tournaments until Friday, but they do remain a threat. They will also know from first-hand experience during the warm-up game that Indian bowlers can be bossed when put under the slightest of pumps.Pakistan have a statistic to set right, though: they have never beaten India in any 50-over or 20-over World Cup match.

Watch out for

Nasir Jamshed scored a fine century the last time Pakistan played India, but was denied a win by a superlative 183 from Virat Kohli. The two are the most promising young batting talents from the respective countries, both have been batting at No. 3 so far, and hold the key to a solid innings for their side.India’s opening – whether with the bat or with the ball – is now a matter of major speculation after the Irfan Pathan experiment with the bat and the R Ashwin one with the ball. Surely Irfan has got to get the new ball if he is to be used as a bowler? And surely India must want their specialist batsmen to get most of the overs?Umar Gul may have won the previous match with the bat, but where has Gul the yorker-bowler disappeared? In 10 T20 matches this year, Gul has conceded runs at 8.4 an over, as opposed to an impressive career economy-rate of 6.88.

Team news

After the England match, Dhoni said he had problems of plenty at his hand. Less than 35 overs of cricket later, he has plenty of problems. Does he stand by his decision of keeping Virender Sehwag out and playing five bowlers? Does he look at the place of Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma in that middle order? Will Manoj Tiwary ever get to play a live game? What does he do with an under-performing Zaheer Khan? What does he do with his own form? Only one thing might be certain at this time: Piyush Chawla’s yet other, inexplicable, comeback might have ended.India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma/Manoj Tiwary, 7 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Harbhajan Singh, 11 Zaheer KhanPakistan will be questioning Shahid Afridi’s utility as a bowler who bats at No. 7. He has done his bit with the ball so far. He is the only Pakistan bowler other than Saeed Ajmal to have bowled all his overs in every match so far, and has conceded runs at only 6.33 an over. That should be enough to keep his place in the XI, but his six-or-nothing batting at No. 7 will remain a cause for worry.Pakistan (probable) 1 Mohammad Hafeez (capt.), 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Nasir Jamshed, 4 Kamran Akmal (wk), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Yasir Arafat, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Raza Hasan.

Pitch and conditions

Conditions at the R Premadasa Stadium now present an interesting dilemma. The curator has now begun to leave the pitch dry, which should make you want to bat first. However, with the ever-present threat of the rain you also want to exploit the Duckworth-Lewis anomaly and avoid the wet outfield.

Stats and trivia

  • Shoaib Malik loves playing India. His overall international average is 31.67 over 282 matches, but in 38 matches against India he has scored four of those nine centuries and has averaged 46.41. In an unrelated incident he has married an Indian, tennis player Sania Mirza.
  • Pakistan and India have never played each other in a T20 international outside the World Twenty20.

    Quotes

“For me I think Virender Sehwag can be very dangerous. I hope he’ll play the next two games. I think it won’t be easy to play the next two games without him.”
BBC”When we play India there is lot of pressure because our people always want us to win. The same is the case in India, so there will be pressure on both teams.”

Rain has the final say

ScorecardA dreary day in Sydney prevented a nicely poised match from being played to its conclusion as New South Wales and Victoria drew the Sheffield Shield encounter at the SCG.Only five overs’ play were possible, the batsmen Scott Henry and Peter Nevill nudging NSW to 3 for 194 and an overall lead of 157 before the umpires called the match off.Victoria took the two first innings points thanks to a century by the opening batsman Chris Rogers, while Mitchell Starc’s four wickets for the Blues enhanced his claims for a spot in the Australian Test team to play in Adelaide.
