Southampton fans take to Twitter to delight at top Man United performance

Southampton fans have had it tough this season. The Saints don’t win many games and with just six wins out of 29 attempts in the Premier League games this season the fans will have been gutted not to have got their 7th against Manchester United yesterday despite the incredible level of performance that they put in.

Southampton fans who made the trip to Manchester would have been in dreamland when they saw Yan Valery step up with a cracking opener. It was a game that had five incredible goals in and the Southampton fans were absolutely gutted not to have been able to get any points from their trip, and after losing narrowly to Manchester United twice now this season, it seems they just have no luck.

If Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side can put in another nine performances in their final nine games of the Premier League season that match the one they managed yesterday then there’s no reason why they can’t be a fair few points clear of the relegation zone. At the moment the Saints are stuck in a real battle near the bottom of the table, yet with games against Brighton, Newcastle and Huddersfield to come, it’s still all in their own hands.

The Saints were delighted with their performance despite the result and will be desperate to keep up their level of performance across their last nine games.

Everton: Marco Silva’s promise finally looks to be coming true

Their away record might not be that good this season but Everton have shown in recent weeks why Goodison Park is such a difficult place to play at for visiting teams. At long, long last.

Indeed, the Toffees recorded an impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea at their home ground on Sunday afternoon, handing the Blues a massive knock in their top four aspirations. Furthermore, the noise and determination of the Everton supporters on Sunday emphasised how badly they want their team to succeed after what has been a very disappointing season for the Merseyside club.

Most people would’ve fancied Maurizio Sarri’s men to walk away with the spoils and in the early stages of the match it seemed like another long afternoon was waiting for Everton. Still, an inspired second-half performance and more focus from Marco Silva’s charges saw them take control of the encounter with the Goodison Park crowd firmly behind their team and helping them over the line in the end.

Everton showed against Liverpool at the beginning of the month that they are capable of holding firm against the bigger clubs in the Premier League when they kept the Reds to a goalless draw at home in the Merseyside Derby.

The Toffees also made life a bit difficult at home for Manchester City earlier this year when they pushed the Citizens all the way, despite Pep Guardiola’s men eventually securing a 2-0 win. Given the fact that Everton have been really poor on the road this season their fans clearly feel they should use Goodison Park to their advantage to salvage any sort of pride from their campaign before the season draws to a close in May.

And with Arsenal and Manchester United still having to make the trip to Everton, the fans will be hoping for very similar results like Sunday.

Both the Gunners and the Red Devils have found it tough to play at Goodison Park in the recent past and will certainly be wary of the threat Everton pose with their fans cheering them on. Well over a month after Silva promised to give the home faithful ‘what they deserve’ (quotes from BBC), Everton finally are.

Aston Villa Injury News: Axel Tuanzebe back in first-team training

[ad_pod ]

According to the Birmingham Mail, Axel Tuanzebe returned to first-team training with Aston Villa on Monday as he bids to play a part in their playoff challenge.

What’s the word, then?

Tuanzebe re-joined Villa on loan from Manchester United last summer, having seen his loan spell with the Championship club cut short last season through injury.

The centre-back has made 19 Championship appearances this term, but has not featured since the middle of December after undergoing a foot operation.

Tuanzebe has since been back at United recovering, but according to the Birmingham Mail, the 21-year-old returned to first-team training with Villa on Monday.

The report has claimed that the Englishman will not be available to face Nottingham Forest or Middlesbrough over the next week, but could return for the home game against Blackburn Rovers at the end of the month.

What does it mean for Villa?

It really is a huge boost for a Villa team currently struggling with a number of defensive injuries.

Tyrone Mings has been impressive since joining on loan from Bournemouth, but the likes of James Chester, Tommy Elphick and Alan Hutton are currently on the sidelines.

Kortney Hause had to switch from left-back to central defence for Sunday’s clash with Birmingham City, with Neil Taylor coming into the XI.

Thogden has ranked his top 5 sets of Championship away fans for Pl>ymaker FC. Did your club make the list? Find out in the video below…

Tuanzebe’s form in the opening weeks of the campaign was fairly mixed, but he switched from right-back to central defence in the middle of October and was in a wonderful run of form before picking up his foot injury – cementing himself as a key member of Villa’s starting XI.

Villa now sit just four points off the top six in the Championship following back-to-back wins, and Tuanzebe’s return has come at the perfect time.

Alasdair Gold discusses Tottenham’s summer transfer window

[ad_pod ]

Football.London’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold believes Spurs could undergo a major squad revamp this summer.

Tottenham have a number of concerns over the future of certain players, with Toby Alderweireld available for a fee of £25million this summer and Christian Eriksen heavily linked with a possible move to Real Madrid.

Doubts persist over the form of the club’s defenders, too, with Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier both struggling for consistency.

And Gold, speaking exclusively to Football FanCast ahead of a Spurs Legends match against their Inter Milan counterparts, believes there could be a number of changes to the playing squad when the transfer window reopens.

He said: “I do wonder if it’s going to be a bit of a revamp this summer, I think they have to. There’s a positive to the stability they’ve had because it’s clearly given a foundation but they’ve never really kicked above it.

“I think a bit of a revamp is probably needed, I think Mauricio Pochettino needs to freshen things up for himself as well. He’s working with the same players he’s been working with since 2014, pretty much, on the whole.

“I think he’s got to freshen it up. The stadium will freshen things up but in terms of the squad, we will see. Obviously, Eriksen and Alderweireld could be out the door. It could be forced upon them anyway.”

Asked about the potential of a deal for Gareth Bale, a romantic notion often floated by supporters, Gold joked: “Well, if they’ve got £650,000 a week, I’m sure they can do it!

“That’s what he’s supposed to earn and I think that’s before tax in Spain. It’s a very romantic notion, Bale and Modric, another one people are wanting, but it’s just not the Tottenham way right now.”

Instead, it appears that the likes of Norwich City’s Max Aarons and Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be on Spurs’ shortlist.

“Very much so, very much so,” Gold replied when asked about the two promising defenders.

“That’s the kind of players. British talent (is wanted) because they had a total mess with the foreign player limit last year.

“Michel Vorm, we’ll probably see leave, because that’s another foreign player signing they could make.”

Spurs have not signed a single player since January of 2018. Expect that to change this summer.

Tottenham fans think Eriksen has given up on the club

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham fans have been running the rule over Saturday’s draw against Arsenal, and they’re not too happy with the form of Christian Eriksen.

Hugo Lloris was the hero on Saturday as Spurs stayed one step ahead of their north London rivals in the race for top four.

The Gunners took the lead in the first half though and were good value for it, with Aaron Ramsey racing through in the first half to open the scoring.

Spurs answered back through a controversial Harry Kane penalty before Lloris saved the day late on, denying a tame Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang spot kick in the dying moments of the match.

There were several poor performances in Mauricio Pochettino’s side despite the relatively positive result, but none were worse than Eriksen.

The 27 year-old, who will be out of contract in the summer of 2020, looked completely disinterested throughout the match if truth be told, and he has now failed to score or assist in three consecutive games.

Eriksen has always been a hugely popular figure at the club, but looking disinterested in what, for many, is the biggest game of the season might just be the clearest sign yet that he intends to leave the club.

Fans suspected something similar after a quiet showing in the defeat to Chelsea, and the Twitter reactions down below do not make pretty reading…

The Verdict: West Ham’s most overrated player

[ad_pod ]

Amid the era of Youtube highlight reels, FIFA ratings and ridiculous transfer fees, it’s incredibly easy for a player’s hype to spiral beyond all proportion, leaving reality in the rear-view mirror. And after a summer spending spree at West Ham, followed by notable improvement in performance, there’s an obvious danger in some of the stars at the London Stadium featuring a little too highly in our estimations.

So, Football FanCast’s writers have answered a curious question: Who is the most overrated player at West Ham? Check out their verdicts below…

James Beavis – Felipe Anderson

“It might be a controversial shout but he just doesn’t do enough for me given how much he cost West Ham in the summer. Yes, he has eight goals and four assists in 31 Premier League appearances in his debut season in England, but in his previous 12 top-flight outings he has produced just two assists. That simply isn’t good enough for a player of his quality given he started all of those games, and the fact he was taken off at half-time against Cardiff shows you all you need to know about how he is doing at the moment.”

Billy Meyers – Jack Wilshere

“Admittedly, the hype surrounding the England international has worn off over the years, but the fact that he is still as highly rated as he is – hence the Hammers’ decision to offer him a three-year contract – is baffling. Of course, he is a decent player, but his crippling injury problems should see his status reduced to that of merely a Premier League also-ran, unless he can prove his fitness.”

Jack Saville – Javier Hernandez

“He may not be the most widely praised or popular player at West Ham but the Little Pea has been stealing a living at the top level for years. The predatory instincts he offers are a useful weapon to have from the substitutes bench, but he doesn’t possess the complete skill set which strikers need to thrive in the Premier League. Pellegrini needs an upgrade to take the Hammers to the next level.”

Maddison? Wan-Bisakka? The Pl>ymaker FC squad name who they think were unfairly overlooked by Gareth Southgate for his latest England squad…

Christy Malyan – Mark Noble

“He’s not rated particularly highly but the point remains that if Mark Noble wasn’t West Ham through-and-through, he probably would be playing at a lower level. Relentless on his day and a clinical penalty taker, however those days have petered out somewhat in recent years and his passing has become increasingly passive. He’s great value and of course, every team needs players who embody the heart and sole of the club. But in terms of actual ability, sometimes it feels as though he’s being carried but those around him.”

West Brom: Two options the board must consider to justify Darren Moore sacking

Well, who could’ve predicted Darren Moore to be giving his marching orders so soon?

West Bromwich Albion’s management surprised many by deciding to let go of the manager who kept them in the promotion race. Wow, modern football, hey? FOURTH and you lose your job. Absolute madness.

Yet, with a packed squad and talented unit, one can’t blame the Baggies wanting more than just attaining a playoffs place. It’s just the manner in which they’ve let a man who helped finish last season on a high note after a torrid campaign with so much still to play for.

The disappointing draw to Ipswich Town was seemingly enough to destroy Li Piyue’s patience. Moore was subsequently sacked as manager and with the promotion race getting heated, the Baggies now need a quality manager to tip them over. Clearly, the club are under pressure to get the next appointment right, having invoked the ire of supporters with their decision to axe Moore.

So, with that in mind, here are TWO such options.

Slavisa Jokanovic

The former Fulham boss is reportedly heavy favourite to get the job and one could understand why.

Indeed, he guided the Whites to attaining Premier League promotion next season, helping them successfully win the playoffs, so would clearly be an attractive option.

The Serbian can do wonders with West Brom’s vibrant squad and his experience to win the playoffs could get the Baggies tipped over the line. If Jokanovic can have them playing stylish, attacking football while being defensively stable, West Brom could keep him to help their charge in the Premier League next season as well. He deserves it.

Harry Redknapp

While he might be out of management for over a year, Harry Redknapp’s qualities cannot be undermined.

He’s helped Portsmouth and Queens Park Rangers both attain promotion to the Premier League before and worked with some formidable Premier League teams.

Despite being vocal that the Birmingham City job was possibly his last, Redknapp’s emerged as a candidate (via the Birmingham Mail) to be new West Brom boss.

If so, he can use his expertise to stabilize their defensive shape and get them playing effective, clinical football again to get back into the Premier League.

Leeds United: Bielsa’s reliance on one style could hinder club’s promotion hopes

It has been quite a transformation at Elland Road this season, hasn’t it Leeds fans?

The Marcelo Bielsa era has brought a style of football to the Championship which has at times been spellbinding when the Whites have been at their very best.

However, as recently demonstrated in their 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United, the obsession with controlling the possession does come with notable drawbacks at times. Whereas the Blades and Norwich City have displayed different game plans for certain opposition, Leeds have, by in large, stuck to theirs regardless of the situation that they find themselves in.

Although this may have worked for the likes of Barcelona and Spain in the past, the constant competitiveness of England’s second tier means that in order to achieve promotion, which is the Whites’ goal this season, they have to develop another way of playing.

Bielsa’s side may have won all 18 of their clashes when scoring first but when you look at their stats when they concede the opening goal, you start to uncover what must be a disturbing pattern for the club’s supporters. Leeds have won just four games out of a possible 19 after going behind which illustrates that their tactical approach is only effective when the team makes the best possible starts to their games.

To solve this conundrum, the Argentine boss might have to think about switching it up in the final eight games of the season if his side are in trouble. This could mean a slight alteration in formation to include two strikers or a drastic change that opposing teams may not expect from Leeds.

Although it would be foolish to suggest that they cannot be promoted by playing the same way as they have been doing throughout the 2018/19 campaign, it would certainly benefit the Whites in the long run if they develop new ideas of how to break down their opposition.

What do you think Leeds fans? Should Bielsa develop a back-up plan for when your side go behind in games? Or do you still have faith that his current system will take you to the Premier League? Let us know below.
