Leeds fans hoping Gary Cahill signs

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are hoping that the club sign Gary Cahill on a free transfer after Football Insider reported that he has been offered to them this summer.

The Whites have a serious lack of depth at centre-back after getting rid of Aapo Halme, Paudie O’Connor and Pontus Jansson already in this transfer window.

The former Chelsea captain would bring an element of quality to Marcelo Bielsa’s backline as he is a former Premier League and Champions League winner.

Although Cahill is 33 years of age he can still be a quality player at Championship level, as shown by how well his former Chelsea teammate John Terry did by leading Aston Villa to a playoff final in 2017/18, playing 35 games despite being well into his 30s.

United certainly need defenders and Leeds fans are hoping that they bring in the former England international to boost their options.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Everton signing Fabian Delph has the tools to become a Goodison Park hero

[ad_pod ]

Everton announced the arrival of Fabian Delph – who had just one year remaining on his contract with  Manchester City – last week for a fee that could eventually rise to £10m.

The Yorkshireman’s utility was a valuable asset to Pep Guardiola during a period of time in which Benjamin Mendy has suffered with a multitude of injury problems.

He was deployed at left-back for much of the 2017/18 campaign and made 22 league appearances, establishing himself as a popular character in the dressing room while thriving away from his favoured central midfield position.

Anybody who has watched the Amazon docu-series ‘All or Nothing’, which follows the Citizens’ title success during that season, will know exactly how important Delph was behind the scenes, with the former Aston Villa man regularly filmed hyping up his teammates at half-time or prior to kick-off.

The Toffees newbie’s passion for the game is epitomised by his comments concerning Gareth Southgate and the rest of England’s coaching staff, which he made ahead of the UEFA Nations League semi-final earlier this summer.

While speaking to The Guardian, Delph said: “So if they (England coaches) tell you to run through a brick wall, you’re going to run through a brick wall. You’re going to do everything that you can for these people.”

Marco Silva will surely be hoping that Delph reserves a similar vein of respect and boundless dedication for him next season.

The Toffees faithful will be hoping that the versatile midfielder can install a similar attitude into the Goodison Park dressing room and, perhaps most importantly of all, share their hatred of Liverpool.

Having played for both Leeds United and City, loathing the neighbour across Stanley Park should come naturally.

Meanwhile, with question marks remaining over the future of Idrissa Gueye, who has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Merseyside since January, the injection of steel into Everton’s midfield is essential.

Delph absolutely loves flying into a tackle. He completed 2.1 tackles per game in the Premier League last season, though his eagerness is not always a blessing: see his clumsy challenge that saw City reduced to ten men against Wigan in the 5th round of the FA Cup in 2018 and his equally rash challenge that allowed Swansea to open the scoring in the quarter-final of the same competition earlier this year.

Barring the occasional anger-inducing moment of lunacy, his insatiable thirst for a thundering challenge will endear him to the Goodison Park faithful, who have surely missed Gareth Barry’s old school approach in the middle of the park since the veteran departed for West Brom in 2017.

Barry’s vast experience was an invaluable asset at Everton and Delph’s can prove to be so too.

The 5ft 9 utility player has 20 England caps and 169 Premier League games under his belt and has played at the elite level of club and international football.

If Silva’s Toffees are to assail the top six, they may need players who have been there before and are capable of thriving under pressure.

Delph might have won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two Carabao Cups during his four years at the Etihad Stadium, but he could yet enjoy another glistening chapter in a darker shade of blue.

Leeds fans discuss Adam Forshaw after drawing with Nottingham Forest

[ad_pod ]

Leeds dropped their first points of the season against Nottingham Forest at the weekend as they drew 1-1, conceding a sloppy goal but also being denied a penalty.

Adam Forshaw was the one who started alongside Mateusz Klich in a creative role but his display left a host of fans bewildered after someone posed the question of why everything seemed to be his fault.

The midfielder has already taken flack on Twitter after having his say ahead of their opening clash a week previous.

Yet, he’s now been the subject of more discussion. One fan claimed that he was this year’s whipping boy whilst another said they couldn’t get their head around the fact he was being targeted because he’s a solid player.

The 27-year-old went down theatrically in the penalty area in the first half, being denied a spot-kick as one supporter described him as someone who puts the team in danger. Others were more kind as one said he was in their top three to four players from the day’s game.

Per WhoScored, Forshaw finished the match with a pass success of 87%, winning three aerial duels. However, he failed to make a single key pass.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying.

Manchester United’s decision to forego Matthijs de Ligt move questioned by Alan Brazil

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on talkSPORT, Alan Brazil has questioned why Manchester United failed to move for Matthijs de Ligt and instead opted to chase Leicester’s Harry Maguire.

What did he say?

Reports in recent months had suggested United were one of the sides interested in signing De Ligt this summer, but as rumours linking the club to the Dutchman cooled, talks of a move for Maguire intensified.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

As the Red Devils continue to pursue a deal for Maguire, De Ligt has completed a £67.5m move to Serie A champions Juventus after leaving Ajax.

In response, Brazil said: “Manchester United, could they not have gone in there with £68m? This is nothing to do with Harry Maguire – I like him as a player – but they are talking about £80m for Harry who is 26 and De Ligt is 20 next month but he goes for just £67.5m.”

A baffling choice

When United signed Paul Pogba in the summer of 2016, the club had finished outside the Champions League places and thus were staring down the barrel at a season of Europa League football. And yet they still managed to pull off a club record deal and entice one of the game’s biggest names to Old Trafford.

So whilst it could be pointed out that De Ligt may not have wanted to play for a side not competing in European football’s elite competition, that necessarily isn’t the be all and end all. United’s stature as a club is that it can lure players of the highest calibre at any given time, regardless of how badly they may have performed the previous year.

Reports had even suggested De Ligt was insistent on getting first-team football at his new club. So by that logic, the Dutchman clearly fancied his chances of fending off competition from the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli as opposed to the supreme double act of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Brazil is certainly right in suggesting United could have pushed the boat out a little to sign the 19-year-old, and are now having to pay an exorbitant amount to try and sign Maguire. Both centre-backs would surely improve United’s defence, but De Ligt’s arrival would have been a massive statement off the pitch too.

Aston Villa fans discuss their striking options as Mbaye Diagne isn’t a target

[ad_pod ]

Time is running out for Aston Villa to find another forward option with the transfer window slamming shut on Thursday night.

One of their strikers, Scott Hogan, looks set to join Stoke City on loan whilst the club have been linked to the likes of Neal Maupay, Charlie Austin and Jean-Kevin Augustin over the summer.

One man who doesn’t appear to be on their radar, despite initial rumours, is Galatasaray forward Mbaye Diagne.

Diagne has been lighting up the Turkish league over the last 18 months or so after making the switch from China in January 2018.

He scored for fun at recent Villa addition Trezeguet’s former club Kasimpasa – in 36 appearances he netted 32 goals and four assists – which ultimately earned him a move to back-to-back Super Lig champions Galatasaray for €10m (£9.2m).

His goalscoring prowess has since continued at Cimbom as the 27-year-old has bagged 11 goals in 17 appearances.

The lack of an incoming in the forward department, as of yet, has left many fans at Villa Park discussing the matter with one supporter stating that another striker is needed before the end of the transfer window.

Villa boss Dean Smith has already shattered the club’s record transfer fee this summer by bringing in Wesley Moraes for £22m from Club Brugge but that doesn’t appear to be enough for some.

A couple of fans believed that Jean-Kevin Augustin is the most likely candidate to join whilst others suggested Daniel Sturridge with one even ambitiously throwing Andrea Belotti’s name out there.

One supporter said it was pointless buying a striker at this stage of the transfer window, comparing any potential addition to Keinan Davis.

West Brom investing in the future by planning long term deal for Nathan Ferguson

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to Express and Star, West Brom are planning to tie young right-back Nathan Ferguson to a long-term deal after cementing his name as first choice this season.

What’s the word?

The 18-year-old has played every minute of their three Championship matches this campaign after impressing manager Slaven Bilic in pre-season.

In front of the TV cameras on the opening day of the season, Ferguson earned the Man of the Match accolade on what was his senior debut as West Brom defeated Nottingham Forest to kick start their quest for promotion.

Bilic even signed a right-back this summer with Darnell Furlong making the switch to the Hawthorns in a £1.5m move from QPR, but he hasn’t even been able to get a look-in because of the performances from the youngster.

Ferguson’s current deal expires at the end of the season so the club ideally need to tie him down sooner rather than later.

Invest for the future

The move would suggest that West Brom are investing in their future – maybe one under Bilic himself if he proves to be a success at the Hawthorns.

There is a lesson to be learned amongst the current Baggies squad – Romaine Sawyers.

The 27-year-old was a product of the club’s youth academy, earning his first professional contract in 2009 but game time was limited and the midfielder was forced to go elsewhere.

He joined Walsall in 2013 on a permanent deal following his release from West Brom before going on to make his name in the Championship for Brentford, playing 41 games last season – the majority of which as captain.

Beyond Sawyers, the likes of Tyler Roberts and Kemar Roofe have both been allowed to leave after coming through the academy before thriving away from the club.

Clearly the Baggies hierarchy don’t want to let another huge talent slip through the net.

Ferguson has developed at a much quicker rate than Sawyers did and that can only stand him in good stead, especially as he currently looks like he’s going to be a first-team regular this season.

By investing in their future, West Brom could have a generational star in their possession as they head back towards England’s top-flight.

Alternatively, if that doesn’t go to plan, they’ll be able to make some money from any potential future sales.

A win-win perhaps.

Lots of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react after Sky Sports reported that Paulo Dybala would prefer to stay at Juventus amid interest from Spurs and Manchester United.

Leeds landing Andrea Petagna would give supporters a reason to be happy

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Tancredi Palmeri and Tutto Mercato Web, Leeds are interested in signing SPAL striker Andrea Petagna.

What’s the word?

Leeds’ transfer activity during the summer hasn’t been too busy as they welcomed Ben White and Helder Costa to the club whilst also bringing back Jack Harrison.

However, they haven’t dipped their toes into the market since Pontus Jansson left whilst a new striker has seemingly been off the table after Victor Orta confirmed they were 90% done in their plans for the summer.

Yet, things could be about to become far rosier again after Tutto Mercato Web claimed they’d offered €15m (£13.7m) for Italian forward Petagna.

There could be a stumbling block in terms of the fee, though, with SPAL searching for something closer to €25m (£22.8m).

Game-changing for Leeds?

The fact Leeds haven’t brought in a new striker during the window is perhaps rather questionable after the problems Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe had with injuries last term.

The former missed 22 games through injury and hasn’t shown too many signs of improving his form throughout pre-season.

With Roofe out injured it means they’ll go into the opening day with just one striker.

Phil Hay confirmed earlier this month that it was unlikely they’d sign a new attacker too. Something that had fans extremely concerned.

Therefore, bringing in someone like Petagna would finally give them a reason to be happy.

The 24-year-old was in top form in Italy last term, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. Having produced those sorts of numbers at a higher level, it would be somewhat of a coup if Leeds were able to bring him to Elland Road.

Even just signing another striker would probably be enough to bring more optimism to certain fans, let alone one who’s produced the goods in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Standing at 6 foot 2, he can be a big presence and could give the Whites a different dynamic in attack.

As Leeds aim to achieve promotion once again, this type of signing could significantly improve their hopes and breathe fresh positivity into the club.
